I don't like those functions either but it takes about 6 hours out of my life for a whole year. Been promoted once because I got to speak with my bosses boss one evening. Just a little small talk and a couple of work related things. There where several people in my dept better at their job than I was, yet I was the only one who got offered the promotion.
Promotions give you more money and interesting projects. If I have to work anyway, I might as well make it as profitable as possible.
