would anyone be interested in a sticky / rundown of Japanese normcore brands?

i used to live in tokyo for 3 years and i was somewhat involved in the fashion (in terms of having a lot of friends working in that industry)

im no expert, but i feel like i have a decent grasp of the different brands that constitute the classic Japanese normcore/minimalist/popeye's city boy type look

here are some pics for inspo and reference as to the style im talking about

Going through many editions of Popeye's Magazine the city boy is a well mixed blend of Americana. Often pulling from sports (particularity baseball and sweats), prep, and casual wear.
>>14794485
So when looking for brands, no need to look for Japanese brands, because these models are more than likely wearing western brands.

pt.1

AURALEE (auralee dot jp)
>one of my favourites
>known for their basics like baggy sweaters and baggy jeans
>good for a more refined streetwear / preppy-ish type look
>sorta comparable to acne or our legacy
>their getting more famous recently with retailers like TRESBIEN selling their clothes
>super expensive retail prices, but many steals on yahoo auctions

COMOLI (comoli dot jp)
>oversized but tailored silhouettes
>basically a more preppy version of AURALEE
>completely unknown in the west but readily available in Japan
>very good for a scandinavian-minimalist look but with a more relaxed fit
>their button ups are my favourite ones i own
>great variety of casual blazers
>super easy to find affordable pieces on yahoo

URU (tumblr dot uru-tokyo dot com)
>very comparable to both AURALEE and COMOLI
>A quintessential city boy look
>Their overcoats/macs are crazy nice
>insanely expensive, but lurk on yahoo for better prices

my beautiful landlet (ovie dot shop-pro dot jp)
>more traditionally inspired
>reminds me mostly of loungewear
>super oversized and exaggerated silhouettes
>pairs well with Yohji-type looks

Universal Products / EVCON / Living Concepts (the 1LDK trio) 1ldkshop dot com
>all 3 are house brands of 1LDK a famous select shop in Tokyo who are kinda like the JJJJound of Japan
>more sportswear inspired
>nice shoulder/roadman bags
>Living concepts is discontinued (now called EVCON), but you can still find pieces on yahoo
>good variety of colours, colour-blocking, and unbranded staple pieces
>basically a more expensive and nuanced MUJI

pt. 2

UNUSED (unused dot jp)
>probably my favourite
>imo UNUSED combines all the nice things about the other brands like silhouettes, materials, colours, and patterns
>their knit sweaters are incredible, I only own 1 but its by far the comfiest one i own
>good for all sorts of looks, but works nicely with grungier looks or even dark academia type thing
>they’re getting some attraction in the west recently, farfetch carries them
>retarded expensive so you’ll be better off buying it from yahoo

DIGAWEL (digawel dot com)
>very streetwear inspired, kinda whack sometimes but cool
>lots of loud colours and colour-blocking, but also more toned-down pieces
>you can find ez on yahoo

baloriginal (baloriginal dot com)
>most streetwear-type brand on this list
>lots coloured graphic tees and sweaters
>cool sportswear inspired outerwear
>not famous outside of japan and kinda hyped so pieces might be hard to come by on yahoo

SUNSEA (sunsea34 dot com)
>very chic and sometimes colourful brand that uses lots of interesting fabrics/patterns
>def one of the more experimental brands in this list simply in terms of the variety of different styles of clothing they release / the type of looks you could wear them with
>would prolly work for a kind of 70s inspired looks
>not crazy expensive like some of the other brands, and yahoo usually has a good selection of pieces for cheap

NANAMICA (nanamica dot com)
>probably the most famous brand on this list, i shouldn’t have to mention too much else about them
>outdoor and workwear inspired

TNF PURPLE LABEL
>only sold at nanamica stores
>high price but great selection of tailored outerwear
>bags are super underrated
>amazing patterns and fabrics
>easy to find but super hyped so even yahoo auctions or Rakuten are expensive usually

Awesome list, I haven't gone through more of the modern Popeye, I've been walking through the ones uploaded by scan-kun. But it seems to me when there is a label presented on a model or showcased its usually a western brand. at least these are the ones I recognize, there was probably a bunch of Japanese brands that went under my radar because I might not know of them, or its a unbranded piece

too lazy to do more write ups, maybe later, but here are other brands worth checking out on yahoo auctions

>Kaptain Sunshine
>MHL (margaret howell's basics line that is super available in japan and retarded cheap on yahoo)
>KOLOR
>ROTOL
>ENNOY
>graphpaper
>sillage (not japanese but the guy lives there and has all his clothes made there)

>> No.14794595

>>14794585
yes its incredibly cheap on yahoo auctions because MHL stores have probably over 20 locations in japan alone, commonly found in big department stores, and it's cheaper there than europe. Most of their clothes (at least those sold in japan) are made in japan too.

ive found margaret howell mainline or MH pieces that retailed for 300-500€ in europe for 100-200€
(or cheaper) on yahoo auctions

pro tip, when u search on yahoo use the japanese alphabet for searching (you find more items this way cause not all sellers list them under the english names)

for MHL/margaret howell you can use this:
マーガレットハウエル

What brands make some great outerwear that has more of a relaxed silhouette?

>> No.14794625

>>14794613
yes so the way it works is that you can go on japanese yahoo auctions, search for the stuff, and then on the top of the browser you'll se a tag for BUYEE which is essentially the distribution link b/w yahoo and the rest of the world.

the original seller will send the clothing to BUYEE distro center where they ship it out to you.

I find shipping is average. Last time I order a woolen jacket I paid 30e for shipping plus additional 40e in import fees cause the country where i currently live are assholes about that stuff. But even with these added costs totaling the amount to maybe 250e it was a cheaper price for the jacket that I wouldve paid retail (or bought from store in europe). Shipping also was pretty fast, about 1 week. Sometimes I haven't got import fees tho so it depends entirely on the size/weight of the package and how it is labeled by the ppl at buyee.

"City Boy" just takes inspiration from the four uniforms: American casual (1945-1968), military, sport, and workwear. Coinciding with the so called "golden years" of American ideals.

Thus, no need to look into the Orient as someone else has pointed out.

The Japanese have simply modernized these uniforms from their admiration of American ideals from this era.

It is noteworthy that the Japanese have a good eye for quality and have also looked into Europe (England, France, and Spain) for other sources of inspiration.
