I always felt that doing or getting something without any significant meaning or contribution to fulfill myself as a person was pointless. I apprenticed at a tattoo shop allowing me to be immersed in the culture. A triad member wanted to get one on his chest as a symbol of his acceptance into the ranks. He almost passed out and went white. He had to lay his head down and take many breaks. He lost the respect of a few people in the room, maybe even mine. On the sole basis that if you're not able to handle the process, you don't deserve it.
The people that were getting hammered by needles upon long periods of time without ever flinching, were looked upon with more approval.

Well, times change. You don't have many such achievements today. I still cannot quite figure out my stance, I'm personally very aware that in still young& edgy and my taste's evolving. Tattoos that are somehow culturally justified are based. I think many people lack self awareness and ability to tell what suits them, but at the same time not giving a fuck is based too. You can't tell right away if someone is easily influenced&needing validation or it's their personal taste showing but you can guess after getting to know them.
