I wait around two years between each session and i use the reference picture as a wallpaper for a while to make sure i like it. Funny to see how my taste changes.

tattoos are stupid, all of them

>> No.14681181

I think tattoos are rad and I particularly think we're entering something of a golden age for tattooing (or at least exiting a dark age). Tattoos back in the past few decades used to be
>chinese letters
>fake tribals
>barbed wire
>tramp stamps
>really shitty "realism"

These days I feel like the quality and variety of tattoos is absolutely huge
>resurgence of sailor jerry and trad-american but with way better technology and therefore higher quality
>extremely intricate dot and line work
>botanical sketches and etchings
>artistic minimalism (like OPs pic)

I love how tattoos basically transformed from being simply a sign of "manliness" or rebellion into a fully legitimate form of artistic and aesthetic expression

>> No.14682104

>>14681181
do you think that people will look back on this era of tattoos and consider it as obviously dated as we consider those 90s-era trends you mentioned?

obviously there are some overdone "modern" pieces like the forest 'scapes, the basic geometric patterns, flowers, but I wonder if the artistic moment in tattooing going on now as you say will be looked back on just the same as previous trends.

I think the ideas themselves will become dated. I think forearm "pine forests", geometrics, and boob chandeliers will probably be looked back on as unoriginal and trendy for the time, but I think what will be different is that they'll still be considered good quality artwork. I think a lot of the trendy styles we look back on from the 90s were pretty unoriginal and boring, but a lot of them were also just straight up bad. Like something I could probably draw up as an untrained artist.

I feel the same about a lot of fashion trends too. We look back at some of the unfortunate trends of the 90s and think "oh my god how did anyone think that was cool?" I'm talking JNCOs, frosted tips, super low-rise jeans, cargo shorts, etc. These days there are lots of trends that are very obviously bandwagons (Dark Academia, terrorwave, palewave, americana/heritage) and will be looked back on as "unoriginal trends that normies followed" but at least the actual clothing wasn't laughably obnoxious.

How do you decide on what tattoos to get? Do you imagine the designs and the placements yourself? Do all of those have any meaning? Where do you get the inspo?
If you could post any tips for getting a style like yours it would be really helpful its what im aspiring to do.

When it comes to tattoo's research the best tattoo shops in the area, visit their website and check out their individual artists. Pintrest is good for inspo, im pretty lucky and all the guys that have tatted me have taken my inspo and made it their own. Don't over think meaning, if you like it go for it, just remember its somewhat permanent. Pintrest is awesome, but research tattooist in your area and see whats about. Only decent pic of my but most my arm is done now and I have a single sternum piece.

I tattooed professionally for 10 years, and as a consequence of that I'm very heavily tattooed myself. The past year and a half I began to look at my body and wish I had never done any of it. I also quit tattooing for work because the majority of people who get tattoos are the most insufferable, ungrateful, annoying group of people who I've ever had the misfortune to waste my time with. Doing it for a living has nearly killed any creative vision I used to have, hopefully with some time off I can recoup. Unfortunately, now I have absolutely no transferable skills to try to do something new with, not to mention I've got tattoos on my hands, face, and head. I feel at this point maybe it's a lost cause and I should go all in- just completely cover my body and try to throw myself back into work after a break.

I used to be all about it, and all about the lifestyle until I realized most tattoo artists are pretentious af, just wannabe rockstars with huge egos. Then after I started doing only custom designs and not allowing flash or Pinterest shit anymore I really realized how unoriginal most people are, and it's pretty disheartening when you're making art that makes you happy but nobody is interested in it, they just want the latest bullshit someone else has. I'm thinking about going to school to be an esthetician actually. I'm really interested in skin and I already have pretty solid knowledge about it as well as cleanliness practices. well, i think scars are tattoos in their own way; they're kind of cool and (usually) not self-inflicted so no pretentiousness. by mirroring a scar with a tattoo you counteract the coolness of said scar. it'll make you look attention craving. a more creative solution would be tattooing a related (or maybe opposite) thing on the other side of the body's axis

>>14694184
Good on you, man. I don't think it makes you less authentic but unfortunately people are probably not going to trust you as much as someone who has a lot of work done. I think it's helpful to know how it feels, that way you can put yourself in your clients shoes and empathize with them a bit more. I'd recommend getting at least one piece so that you can share that experience with them, you've obviously thought about it a lot so I'm sure you wouldn't get anything impulsive as I have.

>>14694380
Don't get me wrong, a few of my tattoos are really special to me and I have some really beautiful artwork done by some incredible artists. That being said... A lot of them are dumb as fuck, and as I started tattooing super young (16) I started collecting before I had any idea of how to put everything together cohesively... It's all kind of thrown together with many different styles.
As for laser removal, it's not something I would just purchase and start zapping blindly. That's about as stupid as tattooing yourself without proper knowledge beforehand. Unfortunately a lot of my tattoos are very heavily saturated and have a lot of colors in them. Hopefully the technology is getting better but it is my understanding that some colors cannot be lifted from the skin. I'm not entirely sure, as removal isn't my wheelhouse. If I decide to do the cosmetic tattooing thing maybe I will look into adding removal to what I want to learn as well. Then I could practice on myself and still have the professional knowledge to apply to whatever I decide to do in the future. I don't think there's any way I can get out of the tattoo game completely (I've invested too much time and the money is WAY too good to quit) but if I can do it cosmetically and switch my game up I might enjoy it again.
