A lot of French menswear is kind of trash imo. Especially the midrange which has been completely hollowed out by h&m and other super cheap brands. I can only recommend a few brands, few of which are tip. Even if we were only looking at jumpers, the UK completely blows France out of the water.

Mid range tip brands I could recommend:
Scavini (Parisian tailor. Great, affordable trousers, mtm and bespoke options for suiting)
Breuer (range of clothes, Gant quality)
Hartford (American esq clothes. Very overpriced but big sales twice a year)
Bellerose (Belgian) similar to above
Wicket (suiting and accessories styles itself as an English styled retailer like old England used to be)
Orbans, septième largeur, paraboot, jm Weston (shoes)
Howards, hast (shirting)

I've probably forgotten some and this is limited to my experiences in Paris but there you go.

Why is the way europe does something automatically the right way? That doesn't make much sense. It doesn't really matter anyway, prep is an American style, euros who dress prep are just imitating Americans. The British kind of get a say in how American preps dress, because they influenced the prep style, but that still doesn't mean that their opinions are the "be all end all" of how to dress. Disregarding the details of British style is what makes American prep unique.

Shorts and Polos are nice, but absolutely not practical in the tropics (mosquitoes will feast on your exposed skin). Black/blue suits are just too formal here (weddings and all that stuff).
So I thought - how to adapt some of TIP to tropical weather in order to dress nicely in a way that's presentable, yet formal?

Pure white linen suits are just a pain in the ass and are too LARPy (think Colonel Sanders).

I imagine a good leather shoe (They are universally nice), linen pants in lighter colors and pastel or slightly playful shirt or some non-white (off-white to darker) suit with some playful tie and pastel shirt.

Long before America existed, both Mainland European countries, and the British isles, had their own upper class styles of clothing. American WASP style was heavily derived from the British, but in many ways, it gradually morphed into it's own distinct style, no longer identical to its British ancestors. In the early 80s, when prep experienced a surge of mainstream popularity in the United States thanks to the OPH, plenty of Europeans imitated the popular American preppy style. They weren't dressing like their own upper classes, they were trying to imitate fashionable Americans (for all the hate and disdain that Europeans display toward America, they are quite fond of imitating nearly everything Americans do). For example, if a stylish Frenchman in the 1980s wore a Lacoste polo, it was probably less an intentional homage to Rene Lacoste, and more an attempt to follow the preppy trend from America. For all of their arrogance, most Europeans in this thread, at least most mainland Europeans, are merely a continuation of that. However, they like to "have their cake and eat it too" by acting like they have a right to participate in the preppy thread, while simultaneously disregarding the rules and details of American prep when it is convenient for them, and acting like their way is just inherently better because they are from Europe. If the Europeans in this thread what to start a "classy european style general" they should go ahead. I doubt many of the Americans here would go shit up their thread. In fact, I'm not sure that I have ever seen an American poster attack Europeans unprovoked, but I see Europeans posting their "America bad!" shit all the time, out of the blue. Thank you for reading my novel.

Rules are what make this a distinctive style. If a style doesn't have any rules, then it is not a style. There is a difference between people who dress prep, and people who are inspired by prep. Sure, I could wear a silk disco shirt with my khakis, because "following rules is larp", but I would be wrong to call it prep.
>>14671461
Prep/Trad/Ivy is fairly timeless. The rules in 1959 and 1989 and 2019 are the same rules. Sure, as time goes on, less and less people follow those rules, but that doesn't make them irrelevant. Wearing prep without following the rules will only lead to fratshit.

>> No.14671500

>>14671483
It seems you haven't found out yet that what you call 'fratshit' is the evolution of 80s prep, whoever dressed in the 50s as trad/ivy might find madras, duck boots, needlepoint belts and other 80s typical things as attrocious, they were probably called fratshit back then. As you said, some guidelines stay, but they are not eternal and they change over time.

By adding a single non-prep item to an outfit that is preppy, you are not going to ruin the full thing unless you try hard to destroy it

You forgot that this thread is also /trad/ which also encompasses European styles of traditional menswear and isn't at all exclusive to America. Ivy and prep I defer authority to Americans but only if you are actually capable of dressing. The majority of what I see in these threads is gatekeeping, insults and butthurt faggots (from both sides of the Atlantic). What I would really like to see is more fits and less pointless (and unconstructive) shitflinging. It's a horrible thing to see, we should be united against the techwear/ninja/wigger teenagers that infest this board and we should stand firm against accusations of LARP (just hide and ignore this crap) that derail every thread.

I think it's unhelpful to talk about rules. It encourages igent behaviour. A particular style should have certain key items but also am ethos or some guidelines that allow you to follow the style but still have your own individuality.

Tip is imo:
Unconstructed
Natural shouldered
Drape not skinny
Comfortable not fitted
Formal but relaxed
Sporty but collegiate
Utilitarian
Classic
Quality materials and construction
Long lasting
Second hand
Occasionally bold but always done in proportion to the rest of the outfit
Conservative (compared to modern norms)

Anything else?

I don't know why someone in the 50s would dislike duck boots, they're an objectively useful thing to own, as for madras and needlepoint, those were seen as weekend/vacation wear, and usually, only one "go-to-hell" item would be worn at a time. Fratshit is when you wear multiple pieces of that all at once, and wear it every fucking day.

If you guys could stop shitflinging for a second, I have an actual style question. I own a khaki flap pocket chamois shirt, and I like it, but I am not sure what pants to wear with it. I think that if I wore it with khakis, it would look like I was wearing a sheriff uniform, flannel slacks would be too formal to go with it, and nantucket reds wouldn't look rugged enough. I was thinking about brown wide wale corduroys, but I would like to hear other suggestions.

>I don't know why someone in the 50s would dislike duck boots
Using swamp boots doesn't sound quite "elitist", because in this thread people is pretending that /tip/ is elitist, WASP (white anglosaxon protestant) and american. But I´ll list some guys that usually appear around these threads:
George H. W. Bush -> episcopalian
J.F. Kennedy -> Catholic
Cary Grant -> british and they say it was jewish
Steve McQueen -> catholic

About clothing, most stuff has its origins in Europe and americans copied them and mixed it into this, which I think it was great. The only items that I would say that are purely american are OCBDs, boat shoes/camp mocs/blucher mocs, duck boots, needlepoint belts and a few things more.

>Fratshit is when you wear multiple pieces of that all at once, and wear it every fucking day.
As the other anon said, it is pure evolution, colours started to become brighter in the 80s with GTH stuff and madras, and now that got bigger. It is not bad, things change.

>>14671513
Of the stuff you listed:
>Natural shouldered
Raglan sleeves found in Barbours or shetlands jumpers are not natural shouldered for example.
>Drape not skinny
None of the pants that appear in these threads are "drape" except for the green corduroys one anon posted in last thread, most are regular or slim fits. I haven't seen yet any skinny fit pant here.
Both slim and regular fits can be seen for example in:
>>14669350
>>14669329
And what you refer to drape can be seen in >>14669353 Which is far more relaxed than regular fit (what you seem to be wearing in that outfit you posted)

>Quality materials and construction
I would add natural materials

>long lasting
This is a bad one to say, because longevity is quite related to construction and also, long lasting is extremely related to treatment: take a good sweater, send it to the washing machine with cold water and tell me if it lasted long or not. If you don't take care of clothing, it won't last shit even if its expensive.

Natural shoulders referred to blazers and suiting, not jumpers. Drape is probably more important for trad than it is for ivy and prep in such cotton chinos are more prevalent than wool pants. Drape is perhaps more important in blazers and suit jackets which shouldn't have darts. Sack jackets are an essential drapery component of tip. You faggots in TIP thread are crying mad over how "DA is just a prep".
What if say to you something like "Oh, this is just an English county wear, why the fuck do you call it Ivy"? Imagine the reaction.
DA is standalone because there is a certain mood in its core which is absent in prep. We build a theme based on this mood, project it onto clothes and the "core" is built. DA purpose is to catch the pessimism and disenchantment with many things in modern world (current state of fashion included), this is why it is "Dark". And "Academia" basically refers to a "researching man" archetype, not a particular student. professor or university (but if you want to refer to humanities students, you can do it). Note how similarly were dressed post-punk bands of early 80s, they share the same mood, and they basically were the researchers disenchanted in punk music, willing to build something new.

Wait, but it's different from those tumblr pictures!
Yes it is, we're basically stealing the name and making our own thing.
