My first impression was that it worked very well, and then I took a look at the grey or greyish-blue jacket with checks, as well as the earth tone brown checked tweed waistcoat, and I thought that it is surprising to me, since I do not usually pair those two kinds of colors together: cool and warm. It is very similar, I admit, but kind of distinct. It is meant to be more evocative of what both professors and students wear at expensive and prestigious colleges and universities. There is often a traditional British or otherwise European tweed countryside aesthetic that gets mixed with this. There is also the fine architecture that one could take into account, as seen with this vintage photograph of the Cambridge University Library, a very mysterious looking place when not filled up much. It would be nice to walk the halls and take notes of my surroundings.

Pairing a warm vest and a cold jacket (and vice-versa) is a popular and nice way of adopting the use of the vest. Navy blue jacket with tan vest, for example.
With that being said, i don't think i have seen that specific combination either.
I would like to point out that his lap flower is too big, a smaller one would look nicer. Also, a red pocket square would look better with that jacket.

I suspect that this phenomenon works as a way to help the younger generations to dress trad, without actually making it sound traditional, but fashion-forward. Sorry to ruin the illusion but the Cambridge university library is a grim brick prison built on a former military hospital where hope goes to die. Most of the interior is scuffed up drab institutional 70s style apart from the entrance and reading room.

The bit in the photo looks exactly the same today though - first floor corridor facing the tea room. Same bookcases etc, only difference is a few portraits on the left hand wall.

There are plenty of atmospheric libraries with nice architecture in Cambridge, like the Trinity or Caius college libraries, but the UL isn't one of them.

I think I finally figured out why this style irks me so much. Its because it reminds of some of the people (mostly ugly and/or fat girls, but there were a few effeminate guys as well) I went to middle school with. They all watched Dr. Who and listened to Queen and thought those things made them unique and interesting, they all enjoyed "lol so random and quirky" humor, and they always volunteered to be in the school plays. These were the kids who thought talking in fake british accents was the coolest thing ever. They straddled the line between weird kids and teacher's pets. They generally seemed to have a pseudointellectual thing going on. They probably thought that they were smarter than they actually were. But all the dark academia stuff, especially the collages people are posting from tumblr, seem like the exact kind of shit those kids would've thought up a few years after middle school.
