I'd say for most guys who are in their mid to late 20s, entering the workforce and never cared about fashion before in their life. It is a save starting point.

It is not going to look spectacular and the guys posting that stuff are truly uninspiring. The thing you need to keep in mind is that this advice is made for people who are currently wearing video game apparel with Velcro wallets.

reddit, especially mfa, just promotes the basics of menswear, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you have no idea how to dress yourself in the morning. Their biggest fault is their exceptionally strict adherence to their own rules, which discourages even moderate experimentation. Sure they're not as sartorially obsessive as Ask Andy, but it gives them the appearance of wearing a uniform instead of something they chose by their own tastes.

Also, a lot of good men's fashion looks effortless and lived in, which isn't really possible when your clothes have that slightly 'too new' appearance about them. This is especially prevalent when they talk about workwear.

idk, you know what you like. but for young dudes who lack fashion confidence, i wouldn't tell them to fill their closets with the most boring square-cut generic vanilla version of EVERYTHING.

because these dudes are low confidence, they follow the guide with faith that they'll look good at the end, and end up with a closet filled with extremely basic 1 dimensional clothes, with the promise of 'building a solid foundation', but just leaves you with a bunch of work clothes and a slimmer wallet that disencourages further experimentation. nothing is tapered, there is no instruction on, for example, what size collar to wear depending on the proportions of your head and body (super important with OCBDs, which is why most people in MFA inspo albums look like shit in them), or how to introduce more colors to your wardrobe depending on your skintone, or how to contrast tapers, like slim top and baggy bottom. you're left with a wardrobe that looks like a dickies work shirt - baggy, zero flair and doesn't give anyone that feeling of 'i'm actually proud of what i'm wearing'. where a basic bastard should be stuff that you'll wear for the rest of your life, in reality, it's just boring stuff that you'll leave behind when you find something better. it's a bad investment.
