The worker at redwing upsold me on some Merino wool socks. Strategically no price tag on them, so I ended up spending $20 on a pair. Extremely comfy though and comes with this lifetime warranty for some reason.
What are THE best socks for wearing boots??

>> No.14549457

Merino wool is great. It's basically the standard for comfy warm wool while still being comfortable.
I just wear shitty Fruit of the Loom socks with this mesh breathable part. The last thing you'd expect to wear with boots but I like them and I don't sweat in them

Considering going for a pair of Solovair monkey boots - are these ugly? I'm basically new to boots - I've only ever worn kinda ugly basic winter boots.

okay, this is a really standard boot shape. However, Solovair's quality is real rubbish. its a bit of a meme but check out red wing. their Sheldon and Williston models are similar and aren't hot trash in quality. They're good but not great. That's pretty much all there is to say about them. They're blobby and ugly, the sole looks childish and also wear extremely quickly. The break in notoriously bad because the leather isn't great. They're just incredibly average shoes that no one should really waste time on when other brands exist.
And Docs is all of that but a step down. Docs are bottom of the barrel crap that no one should be wasting money on.
They're ugly boots, poor materials and they're marketed towards teenagers. There's a reason the only store I ever see selling them is Journey's. If you're an adult then just skip them and buy quality.

Bakers is actually a company that distributes boots. They have a deal or somethign with Whites where you can order custom boots through them and Whites will build them. You get way more options through Bakers and they offer a discount code so you get 10% off. 10% off 500 dollar boots is 50 bucks, so it's a pretty good deal.
There is no reason to order through Whites directly when Bakers is so accommodating.

>>14549672
As for Viberg, they're seen by many as one of the top brands in the boot world. They make an amazing looking boot and honestly, their prices are almost worth it for the look of the boot alone. The 2030 last they use for their boots is one of the best shapes out there. The thing with Viberg is the price. They know they're good so they charge you for it. It's up to you to decide if 700 is worth it for boots. But when it comes to cordovan, Viberg is one of the best. Many bootmakers offer cordovan but don't know how to use it. Cordovan needs different tension on the last and other factors that lesser brands don't know or care about. They just want to make a boot and cost more for it. Viberg actually knows what they're doing and make a great product.

Hey br/o/s, saw this pop up on the front page.
I've been looking around for a new pair of boots for a while now. I had a pair of DrM workboots that last me 8 years but from what I've seen of their lineup nothing will work for my situation now.
Problem is I work in an office now and need a boot to match my suit yet still be durable enough I can ride my Harley to work. My suits are black or grey, so a black boot will work the best.
Looking to keep price down under $150 max, the wife will have a heart attack if its much more than that. If its quality and durable, I think I can convince her that it will last longer than the cheap $40 amazon boots I buy once a year almost.

You dont need a specifically durable boot to ride a motorcycle, as long as its welted and tapped it should hold together while shifting. If you're worried about scuffing your boots there are slip on protectors that work fine. Not speaking for this particular brand, just an example but they also come in different materials so something thicker like leather may better prevent shifter depressions

That pic is actually from the day I conditioned them last. I use Red Wing's all natural conditioner. It's made with beeswax. You're thinking of mink oil, which Red Wing offers.
Mink oil penetrates deep in the pores of the leather and as a result darkens them a lot. Other conditioners don't do that and don't darken them near as much or at all.
This is the one I've got: https://www.redwingheritage.com/us/USD/product/care/products/conditioner-all-natural-3-oz-97104
I use it on all my oil tanned boots, not just my Iron Rangers.

If they did darken it it was only very subtle. Those are to 8111s and in my pic is how they look after a conditioning.
And besides, the darkening thing is a meme. They darken them but they lighten back up with wear. Before long you wouldn't even know they got darker.

i honestly do hate saying this, because iron rangers are fairly expensive, but you have the wrong size boots. the length may be fine, but you can tell by the distance (closeness) of the eyelets , that you most definitely need a narrower width. your feet are swimming in those.

Nope, they fit great. Those are also super thin socks. The right boot gets really close together like that for some reason but I think it's just how the boot was made.

I wanted a lightweight boot that I could wear casually while also using for light hiking. What boot would you recommend for that? And yeah, I had a feeling they wouldn’t look too good with shorts and that I should save them for the fall and winter. And no, I don’t wear rectangular wire frame glasses.

In context of the site? they have unissued and used military equipment. the boots? well my came lightly used (they just needed a re-heeling) but i can't speak for them all, as two of my friends got their own pairs in far better condition (could be due to my cucked shoe size and less stock to choose from). and uh i use mine pretty frequently, going to start rotating it now that i know it'll fuck them if i don't. but they're well built with decent leather that actually absorbs oil/grease/whatever and have a pretty good steel shank. went on a trip with scouts to switzerland and had them as backups to my main boots (which i realised were too small day 1) and used them for the duration of the trip with no foot problems to mention. obviously these aren't be-all-end-all boots, they're heavy, the stitched sole can only do so much so far as keeping water out and the insole they come with is shit, but if you break them in, get new insoles (i got jalas') and wear decent socks they perform pretty admirably for their cost.

I think it's for some but not everyone.
I'm not a fan personally. It doesn't stretch much or at all, so you have to really nail the sizing from the start. It doesn't breath very well, so wearing them in hot weather is hard and if your feet sweat it will only make things worse. It's subjective, but many people think they look plasticky. I agree and they remind me patent leather almost. The biggest downside is that they're just so much more expensive than cowhide.

The idea behind steel toes isn't that they'll protect against big heavy things. Obviously your foot is getting fucked no matter what you're wearing in that case.
