Suppose I'm looking for more of an everyday wear dark aesthetic than maybe "classic goth", What I dislike are those thigh high platform boots, a lot of chunky jewelry etc is what I would consider Goth party wear

It's the fashion sense of an undertaker, someone in mourning. But also a retro creepy monster aesthetic. Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker and other Gothic horror writers of the age were it gets it's name from. So someone walking out of a grave yard dresses in that period clothing. But later it gets mixed up with the Universal monster movies and the Adams Family and Munsters, and Vampyra/Elvira kitsch. It's more than fashion, it's a musical vibe and a philosophical frame of mind of the terminally depressed, gloomy teenager, but too often drifts to escapism into the fruity world of Vampire larping. I'm not embarrassed by it anymore, but I only dressed in simple black for a little while. My mom called me Johnny Cash for it for cryin' out loud.

It's impossible to judge a person properly without knowing them as an individual but I have to say that as a first impression I like it when people do what they like despite it causing them to stand out. Goth is an example of this and it helps that I find it cute when pretty girls dress that way. I suppose I'm also drawn to it because I hate, really hate, the modern kind of normal culture (hip-hop and current pop music, clothes, etc etc)

I hate everything about it from its urban-centricism to the content it typically deals with, though I know there is plenty of less mainstream stuff that goes all over, to the sound itself. Mostly I hate the stuff which is 'mainstream' and influences mainstream popular culture, the rest of it I can appreciate for its artistic qualities if it has any but still dislike the sound itself.

>>14545282
well if you dislike the sound itself then i'll spare you any recommendations because there are genres i have never been able to get into and i get that. mainly i want you to think about hip-hop as the most populist "folk" music possible right now (i don't know music history so i hesitate to say "ever" but i feel like it could be true). it makes a lot of sense if you think its urban-centrism as a result of it being at inception by and for the urban poor. i say "folk" in the sense that it is a form of music that takes relatively little formal training and almost zero monetary barrier to entry, possibly the least of any style of music, yet still has room for expressing technical skill. and i also say folk and populist because mainstream hip-hop can be interpreted as either straight escapism or inspirational success stories, usually with emphasis on intelligible lyrics, and this might be the most accessible that music has ever been to the working class/lower class/etc.
i personally have little patience for dumb rap but even if i wasn't into any hip hop at all, i think i would still be really impressed with how groundbreaking of a genre it is socially speaking. postan more chelsea in an attempt to stay remotely on topic

>> No.14545519

>>14545343
Oh I know what you mean about folk. I agree that there's some which could rightly be called folk, possibly with the exception that it's not always passed along for others to sing. Real folk is the oral tradition, people like you mention creating music and it spreading among their peers and being passed down and along through the voice. In that sense some guy rapping in his basement with his friends is far more folk than studio created 'folk' music like, say, Mumford and Sons which is just indie pop with a little influence from traditional sounds and sometimes drawing on traditional songs/lryics but recasting them as pop. I'm not a purist or anything, I don't get wound up about it but there are people who do, and who will say that once people started writing down or recording music that it was no longer folk.

>groundbreaking a genre
Can't argue with that, it's just I don't like most of what it's lead to. But now I'm basically repeating myself.

I have nothing to post which is on topic because I'm a faggot.
