>apparently bad leather (when compared to earlier seasons)

Only if you have really irregular feet. MTO is more for custom leathers, different soles and non standard options. You sound like you're just looking for the basic parade boot which is totally fine and a great choice.
Assuming you get the boots Dayton will contact you about sizing and have you send in tracings of your foot from which they will help determine your best size. Since you're local just hop in and get sized.
You're overthinking all this. You think you need a MTO boot when you really just want the stock boot

They're basically the same boot but with stylistic differences. The parade boot is simplified with no heel counter, simpler look and different heel(I think, can't remember). It's more dressy whereas the service boot is a work boot design and is much more solid and tough.
Go get sized and try both styles and see which you like most. They're made on the same last shape, so the fit and feel is the same, it comes down to your preferences

My most expensive boots are Whites that cost 500 dollars and they're absolute tanks, I anticipate them lasting me decades with just a few resoles as needed.
Functional boots that are Goodyear welted and can be resoled will last as long as you take care of them. People get 10-15 years out of them in many cases. Prince Charles has a 40 year old pair of shoes that he still wears regularly.
No need to spend 1000 on boots when you don't really know what you want or like when 300 dollar boots will do the job just as well.

My friend, swing by Dayton's shop and try on their service boot. Get fitted in person to make sure it's correct.
These are their service boots in black oiled smooth. Oil tanned leather is tough as nails, scuffs and scratches go away easily, and it's actually pretty comfy when broken in. They've got a Vibram sole with good grip with no slip and they're resoleable so in a few years you can send them in to Dayton and they'll put a new sole on them for even more years of wear. They're 695CAD/525USD. If you don't like black oiled smooth, there are CXL options as well which are more of a shiny black versus matte.

Yep, those are burgundy CXL from the looks of it. This is what black CXL looks like on that boot. It's more of a shiny look. CXL's finish is pretty fragile as it's dyed on top instead of dyed through, so it scuffs easier, but that's not worth fussing over.

Copper Rough and Tough is great.

One of my Solovair boots was pinched or warped. Creased very weirdly and never quite went normal after lots of wear. Cosmetic issue though I reckon.

Oh only cosmetic, good think the way the boot looks doesn't matter haha.

I was reading red wing posts on the forbidden forum earlier and saw a guy posted his exact pair which were flawless in the area mine are creased. Made me think I made the wrong choice. Matt and Marry really let me down when doing the inspection.

can anyone help me ID these? nabbed them on a milsurp site (ex diplomats boots) but unlike any of the other military boots i cant ID them. ive looked at all the big name shoe manufactures i can think of and none of them have a chelsea like these.

as far as i can see theyre made from a single piece of leather stitched up the heel, and theres nothing like that out there as far as i can see, even very expensive (£700) chelseas are made from multiple cuts stitched together at the side.
