Hungry watchmaker here. I wanted to pitch the idea of a raise to upper management, but I swear Mr. Shekelstein has a sixth sense, because we had a minor exchange over the phone over my monthly parts budget. My monthly budget for batteries, parts, straps, crystals, replacement movements is $350 a month. July I had to spend $500 because there's a lot of shit. So now I ask about the August $350 on the phone and he's like "what, you want more of my shekels, AGAIN?". All this while they have every invoice of every part, and every breakdown of every expense in their possessions. I know because I give it to them.

So either management doesn't actually study my expenses at all and just make sweeping generalizations about my income and expensees, or they're deliberately fucking with me in some 4D wagecuck chess scheme.

Funny thing, I've never ever been into watches, my whole life I sort of ignored them altogether.
..until recently that is, when I one day realized that everyone (I mean literally everyone) around me at the office were wearing a watch. I jokingly said that I should probably step my watch game up and started casually started looking for a watch model I like..

What a mistake. It's been 4 days of looking through countless models online, countless shops, countless dealers, retailers, fakes etc.. When I close my eyes I see watches. I start modeling watches in my imagination.

The world of watches is truly amazing and it's too large. I did find 2 models which I found the most appealing, first one being the Milgauss (pic related - either blue or black dials are fine) and second is the Daytona anniversary. Ironically, even the affordable Daytona homage made by Invicta (15588/9 models) is soldout absolutely everywhere and it's not possible to get.

Dont do it.
Only buy high quality fakes.
The $400 replicas are more than ten times better than the $150 fakes.
Go on replica watch forum and spend a few weeks learning. Also r/reptime. Look up the superrep list.

There are incredible fakes in the $400 price range.
You can get a 7.1 mm thin Vacheron Constantin fake using Miyota 9015 movement (very reliable).
You can get a JLC Master Ultra Thin Moonphase that requires less servicing than the real 10k watch.
You can get a Cartier Santos, a Patek or 1:1 scale replica of any sports watch you love with platinum plated movements for $350
You can get a fake IWC portugese with real working tourbillon movement for $700. The real IWC tourbillon watch is $70k and looks nearly identical.

Dont buy $150 fake watches. Its really worth getting the $400 replicas.

Now the chinese have released $700 tourbillons and we have another crisis for swiss watches. And chinese watches are getting tonnes of hate. Spring drive is its own thing and if you want that you are going to get a gs or a piaget. Spring drive is A QUARTZ REGULATED movement. Their mechanical offerings have no third party certification, no balance bridges, no free sprung balances and all are rather large. Almost all of the price for a watch is in the brand name and just the small man-hour labor required for the hand-finishing of the movement. Beyond that, you can find makers who do in house movements on beautiful pieces for a half or a third of the cost of the competitors, who use ETA or Selita. And all that's different is they're not an old company.

2 months ago I bought 2 £60 guanqin watches off aliexpress. As they looked nice and I knew nothing about watches. I really loved the open heart one. Slowly I learned to hate it and see how cheap it looked.

I learnt about watches slowly. I then bought a Hublot fake for £100. Im wearing it now. Its OK but uncomfortable. The date wheel is a little off. I posted a pic of it here once and some people thought it was real and one person spotted it was fake. It passes the normie test but not much else.

I only wasted £200, and to be honest, I got a fair bit of fun out of it. But if I could go back I would buy a £400 Cartier Santos replica. Or a grape dial Rolex Oyster. Or a JLC ultra thin moonphase. Or maybe a hublot classic fusion with green dial. I will buy one of these soon anyway and likely gift my cheap aliexpress watches away.

It might be worth getting a £100 cheap fake as a starter watch. Its certainly better than getting SEIKO or CASIO in terms of impressing normies. Buying a fake watch in Thailand on holiday is a literal Chad thing to do.

Back in the day, you absolutely had mechanicals for every working man. That, and the fact that parents would often gift their sons a first watch when they turned 18/21/first job/whatever. If the father died, the first-born son got the father's watch.

Watches truly were passed down, but if you needed a new one, 1 week's salary was all that was required. Today that seems somewhat ludicrous, but it's only because mechanical watches had no purpose when the quartz revolution occurred, so to restore perceived value to mechanicals, the industry marketed based on 'heritage', 'hand-craftsmanship', 'status', etc. The same con job that the diamond industry has been peddling since the crash before WWII.

Yes, it can. But living expenses were far less than they are now, so you could 'save' for a month and have a watch. In today's world, it's more like saving for 6 months for many people, given what is normally required to survive. Back in the day, the first job happened around the same time as the boy was still living at home, establishing a career. So, he could theoretically throw that money at something that he was going to use for life, and it was perfectly acceptable as a first purchase. Incidentally, after the watch, the next thing to buy was a motorbike or a car, and then after that you bought a wife.

>>14534520
Several factors.
1) It was FAR more accurate than mechanicals.
2) The tick was cool because it was never seen before in a wristwatch. It was only seen on pendulum clocks. Furthermore, it added the prestige of having something that was 'precise and accurate'.
3) The first quartz watches were status symbols in themselves, as they were very expensive and represented 'modern technology'. Eventually, they were made cheaper, and you didn't have to set them once a week or anything like that. There is cache to something that is new technologically, as well as being against the trend.

Finally, after a few years the cost became far lower than the standard mechanical, which is what induced the first quartz crisis. If you can buy a watch factors cheaper, factors more accurate then a mechanical, then why not? Mechanicals were as a result 'outdated' technology, which while well made, were obsolete.

Consider what happened when cell phone technology graduated to the point where people could carry them in their pockets. Before, cell phones were large, cumbersome, and were most conveniently found in cars (our car had one). But as soon as it was possible for people to easily and reliably carry them in a pocket (Nokia), then no one ever went back.

The sad thing is, in terms of timekeeping quartz is actually superior in every way. Mechanical watches cannot compete.

That being said, there is a reason I love mechanicals. They represent a pinnacle of human engineering, innovation, invention, and intelligence, and they are a reminder that humans can do incredible things if they put their mind to it. I wear both quartz and mechanical, for different purposes; the quartz can handle rollercoasters, gun ranges, and the like, and the mechs are for the aforementioned beauty of human achievement.

There is value in both, but one has to be cognoscente of the marketing that drives the sale of things people don't actually need.

Dude, this might sound a little harsh, but you need to grow up.

If you want to wear a watch, wear it for yourself, it doesn't matter if it's quartz or mech, Seiko or Rolex, whatever. You have to not care about what other people think of your wrist accessory, assuming that your fashion choices do not affect your job, your ability to get hired or get a promotion, etc.

There are business people who wear a Cartier, athletes who wear Mille, administrators who wear Rolex, etc....it's all the same in the end. There will always be people who are jealous of something they can't afford, there will always be people curious about something they've never seen before, and there will always be people who don't give a damn because they'll spend their hard-earned money on something else that only they care about and no one else does.

You have to be happy in life, and the bottom line is that if you take care of your finances properly, then spend your discretionary funds on whatever the hell you want to spend it on. If it's a new big TV, go ahead. If it's a watch you've saved 2 years for, go ahead. In the big scheme of things, none of it matters (as I said, as long as it doesn't affect your job situation in a negative way).

I wore Panerai for years, though the industry hates them. I wear my 'Chinese shitter' now for shits and giggles, even though the people who see it criticize it immediately for being Chinese even if they don't know the movement inside. You have to understand how to laugh at people who are either misinformed or underinformed....it's the easiest way to get through life.

Actually it's more due to the lensing that occurs when you take a photo of your wrist from close up using a camera as opposed to a phone. The further away your wrist is from the lens, the smaller the watch looks. The lugs of both Panerais actually do not overhang my wrist 'in real life', but with a macro lens everything is out. The Casio AE1200 is not a “Bond Watch”. It has not appeared in any of the films.
Furthermore the nickname “Royale” is misleading. It hasn't been referenced in the Casino Royale novel, nor shown in the two Casino Royale films.
Now let's talk about the Seiko G757.
Bond wore a digital watch in Octopussy. Octopussy was released in 1983, which is 29 years before the AE1200 seems to have been released, so it is impossible for the AE1200 to have been in Octopussy.
The digital watch worn by Bond in Octopussy was made by Seiko. The Seiko Group and Casio Computer Co., Ltd. are different companies, and Casio does not own Seiko. In other words, the digital watch worn by Bond in Octopussy was not a Casio, and therefore could not possibly have been the Casio AE1200.
I have heard arguments that the Casio AE1200 (not worn by Bond in any movie) and Seiko G757 (worn by Bond in Octopussy) are so similar that the Casio AE1200 should be considered a Bond watch. This is a weak argument that does not stand up to minimal scrutiny. For the sake of argument, let's accept that watches not worn by Bond can be considered to be Bond watches if they match real Bond watches in specific areas. Let's compare the Casio AE1200 and the Seiko G757 to establish those areas:
Display Type (digital)
Hands (hour, minute, second)
Number of buttons (4)
Dial shape (octagonal)
Country of Origin (Japan)
Now if you believe that the Casio AE1200 is a “Bond watch” because it matches a real bond watch in the above categories, then you would also believe that any watch matching other real Bond watches (let's use an Omega Seamaster 300 for example) in those categories would also be a “Bond Watch”
* Display Type (analog)
* Hands (hour, minute, second)
* Number of buttons (0)
* Dial shape (circle)
* Country of Origin (Switzerland)
This would include so many watches so as to render the concept of a “Bond watch” meaningless.

Also, only buying them for the rising value? wtf are you talking about? I agree it's complete bullshit they are being limited, but it's bullshit because their is no easy equivalent to desired models from them, if you get a ____ it will be "yeah this is nice but if anything I'd want this to accompany a rolex instead of replacing one"

Some exotic shit that came my way. Owner couldn't set the time, only the hour (as this had an independently adjustable hour hand, like on a GMT, or a modern quartz Semenmaster) so at first we suspected a problem with the keyless work.

Turns out this movement has a tiny push button in the middle of the crown and holding that down spins motor to the desired location. You set the minutes and seconds with the button, and then set the hour and date with the crown.
