What are your thoughts on the deliberately wide look of 18th through 19th century “poet” or “pirate” style shirts? Most wearers were neither of those two occupations, but those are terms that popularly refer to these antiquated fashioned shirts. Not all of them had frills or multiple pleats, either. Have you seen examples of unusually wide shirts being worn effectively, within recent years? Do you like the look of a loose dress shirt?

leave them in the past

Here are a couple of rather distressed, lower class looking examples of those types of shirts, in linen fabric as most of them historically were. Almost always, a waistcoat covered the shirt, due to standards of dressing, as without one would be considered undressed.

A waistcoat was also a practical way to contain some of the extra looseness of the shirt fabrics.

I hope these shirts with frills come back into fashion. They look nice, but it would also demand a proper attire to look decent.
I think they are ugly as they are in your pic, though.

Another striped one, probably common amongst tradesmen and seafarers.

Looks nice, but it is unwearable as of now.
Now that i think about it, i'm pretty sure i have seen a shirt very similar to the one in the OP in my local Ralph Lauren store just last week, although with a slightly faded and stained look. Maybe it is something rich potheads wear casually nowadays, idk.

Did the shirt have the polo shirt pullover look, or was it buttoned all the way down, like most modern shirts?

>> No.14528346

unfortunately you'd be a LARPer if you wore this rn

It was similar to these, only had 2/3 buttons.

Probably so.

Interesting. I wonder if it is a slightly slimmer version of the style? Here’s a waistcoat I’m considering to buy, if I’m not quite sold on the shirts, yet. It has size adjustment strings in the back for the waist, and the stand-up collar could be folded down for a more modern and conventional look, basically a shawl collar. It would pair nicely with a contemporary slimmer styled dress shirt, too, especially white, blue, and beige, as well as striped and checked variations. I own a very similar waistcoat, but it has a lighter color, with a square/flat bottom, and has a notch lapel look when folded down, rather than shawl collar.

Popover shirts.
Not as loose as actual 18th century ones but the right compromise in terms of style both with regular or mao collar

Thanks. I think that I might still opt for a little looser in shirts like those, due to actually having to pull them over the head, but I’m glad slim ones exist.

I love them. Very practical in the summer. I usually tuck them into well-worn jeans, burgundy penny loafers and add a neck-cloth. Gotten quite few compliments too.
You can pull them off, just fine. Just ask yourself - are you dressing to fit in or to stand out?

>> No.14530285

>>14530275
Well, my answer is usually that I dress for myself, with perhaps others taken into consideration for certain kinds of events. I think there is probably a place for a historical shirt style, as long as it's maybe after the ruff collars era of the first half of the 17th century. Shirts after that seem basically like they're capable of looking normal for today, with some tailoring to take them in more, but a large part of the historic look would be lost if I turned one of them into slim fits.

I like to wear shirts similar this under vests. I'm female and the vests I wear tend to be feminine, and over all I like the look and the feel. Each of the shirts I have are low quality, though, exclusively thrift finds and not exactly like OP, but it's what I'm going for.
