My school didn’t have a prom because the past 3 years, the seniors would get shitfaced and trash the school. So, the student council decided to put on their own prom. It was on a boat and had an open bar. I got my dick sucked in the bathroom. Good times. Also, one dude got in a fight with 0ne of the security guards and wound up doing like 20k in damage. The girl who was president of the student council’s dad had to pay the damages out of pocket.

It was in the mid 70s today, so I was finally able to give this a full test. Tobacco scents are my favorite scents, and this always gets compared TV and Herod. Both of those are great, and this is definitely in a similar vein, but for me this is the beast mode version of D&G the One that people have always wanted. At least in the drydown, anyway. The opening is all honey, but that fades pretty fast for me and what’s left is a really solid semi-boozy tobacco. Kind of reminds me a bit of Jazz Club, but without the whisky note which I personally dislike. For $60-80, this is really fucking solid if sweet tobacco fragrances are your thing

Expected a wearable version of Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan (that I one of the most fascinating frags I know but I can't imagine anyone but a rich middle aged French perverts wearing it while hitting up on young chicks at French Riviera) but got a flat laundry musc that was barely animalic instead. Quite a bummer. I left myself a small decant to test it over Autumn/Winter and sold the bottle. For that money I bought a bargain Nicolai Cap Néroli bottle and Zoologist sample set. Go to the perfume section of a large department store (I did in Paris last week) and take a look around. A revolution has happened virtually overnight: the little”niche” perfumeries now take center stage, and the great firms of the past are relegated to the outer edges. If someone had told me this a few years ago, I would have jumped with joy at the prospect. Now steal a bunch of smelling strips at the Chanel stand, spray on the little guys, take them home and smell them at leisure. What do you find ? With a very few exceptions (read on), not a single great
perfume.

Instead, you’ve got the fragrance equivalent of second-rate naïf paintings: faux simple, cute names, a sort of pigeon toed mediocrity raised to the level of artistic manifesto. Then read the press releases: a torrent of blather about natural, expensive materials, a solemn rejection of all that is crassly commercial about the big firms. You’d think these guys had chased black orchids half-way across New Guinea to bring you the bottle you’ve just paid 100 € for. Smell the perfume, though, and you know they never left Leverkusen.

How did it come to this? Very simple: they are in it for the money. The world is full of suckers that will buy a perfume merely because it is not from a big firm, naively thinking no-0ne else will be wearing it. This is like preferring Hummel to Mozart because nobody hums Hummel. Second, the competition between niche products is slack, so they get sloppy. Say what you will about Big Names but when they award a brief to a fragrance house, the thing has been fought over by every good perfumer in the world, and the winner has gone through several hundred variations. This does not mean it will be good, but it virtually guarantees that you’re not smelling a first draft.

>> No.14526089

>>14526081
The exceptions ? A few small firms that consistently produce great perfumes, such as Patricia de Nicolai and Serge Lutens. But there is one firm that looks like the beginning of a story in the Grand Manner, like Coty, Guerlain, Caron and Piguet: Frédéric Malle. Got my L'Aventure Knight bottle today.

Compared to my GIT decant, the opening is a bit harsh and unique but after 30 min it smells 80-90% similar, a bit sweeter and unfortunately without the trademark clear Creed quality.
Overall, it doesn't smell cheap like the Armaf and Rasasi clones I tried so I'm very happy. If I had the money I'd always choose GIT over LAK though.

Also, I can recommend L'Aventure which I prefer over Aventus actually. Good stuff, Al Haramain.

Help me out guys, I want something more rough for evenings and the upcoming autumn. I usually wear Invasion Barbare, Kouros or Chinotto di Liguria. So I enjoy a bit of bitterness or dryness.
The last days I tried out a few frags and Arso by Provumum Roma and Amouage Interlude stood out to me as wearable as well as extraordinary. How would you decide between those two, do you have other recommendations along these lines (by the fireplace for example was to agreeable for my purposes)?

Might wear the fragrance at home, for dinner or at the theater. Maybe with classic leather shoes and tweed or linen jackets.

Good taste. Welcome to /frag/ and keep coming here to post. We need more people like you.

Profomum Roma is almost universally better than Amouage but both are solid choices. I think we've got quite similar taste (albeit I wouldn't call Arso as a fragrance that is easy to pull off), so I'll list a few other of my Autumn fave with a somewhat similar vibe. Jubilation by Amouage, Les Jeux sont Faits by Jovoy, Amber Star and Naxos by Xerjoff, Bois d'Ascese by Naomi Goodsir, Chergui and Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens, New York Intense, L'Artisan Timbuktu

What's your best recent cop, /frag/?
I recently bought a brand new unsprayed tester bottle of Polo Modern Reserve on ebay for $94 delivered. It's the best version of Polo to ever exist, and has been discontinued for several years now. I get myrrh, vetiver, and a mix of classical green herbs with some light florals. It feels like a big 80's green cologne cleaned up for modern day non-grandfathers. If you have even a hint of nostalgia for Polo Green, Modern Reserve is a perfect iteration that lets you sidestep the whole reformulation issue which plagues all modern versions of 80's frags.

Only the truly small, niché perfumers will provide anything unique, and even then there are only so many valid combinations. The real variations will only be found in top notes, everything else is very samey. "Clones" are a good choice since you often get the exact same compounds for much less.

Fashion is much the same. People will avoid buying the same exact look for less, because they want a tag. Naturally, there are issues with buying identical replicas there, since cutting corners with fabric will lead to a different quality and thus different products.

Didn't want sound too sassy about 2 Man in the post above. Don't get me wrong, it does it job quite well and it's a good choice if you're after something of that incensey type. Performs well too, but it's not on par with any of the stuff I mentioned here >>14526663 >>14526672
>Wonderwood
Great scent. Shit performance. Really realistic wood broken by a crisp peppery note.
>Amazigreen
That's a one bloody good fragrance. It's hard to do some fresh summer fragrance that wouldn't rely on standard citrusy/fruity/blue accords. They managed to do that. But that's some a perfumery equivalent of some high fashion so might be hard to pull of for some.
>Blue Encens
That's some wicked gothic shit right here. There's something unspeakably sinister about this fragrance. Shit performance.
>Floriental
Lovely, lovely fragrance. I bought it for my gf for her bday, otherwise I'd be wearing it myself.
>Avignon
That's how a forgotten village church that remembers medieval times smells like during a Sunday mass.

>French Lover
Absolutely mindblowing stuff and my fav Malle. Opening smells like fresh vegetables taken out of wet soil. Very masculine.
>Portrait of a Lady
You might want to test PoaL at some point. It's really unisex if you're not afraid of the rose note which is absolutely gorgeous here. It comes as the second favorite FM of mine. I'd get a small bottle for myself if I didn't gift it to my gf and made quite unique memories with her wearing it. I'm glad that she loves it too, so I can smell it on her.

Basically I agree with you about the price. You can probably get it cheaper on facebook groups but idk if you want to be bothered with it. As I said that's a good starterpack that will give you understanding of the brand. The price surge by 100% is savage and I get your pain here bud. That's though what good niche houses are predestined to do once they get someone somewhat business minded on board. That's what I believe will happen with Nicolai soon, too. Patricia Nicolai used to don't care about anything but creating fragrances. They were fond of being less consistent with flacons than early Amouage. Now they got completely rebranded and opened shops in bloody good locations in London and Paris. Some time ago I had a chat with a guy working at Nicolai at Chelsea, London and he told me that the brand is now already one of favorites of Saudi and Kuwait royal families. They apparently come to the shop, close it for couple hours and leave there dozens of thousands of pounds effectively clearing the shelves. Buy it cheap while you can lads. Friendly hint is that you can get a sample set for 30EUR online till August.

That's not a one person. While I don't relate to the 2 notes part of his post, I really believe that base, heart and head phases are bogus and genuinely agree with him that for most of the time but the first minute you get pretty much the same scent. When you read about the phases on internet people try to make more out of them than I believe they are. Like fragrance changing completely every 2-3h. That never happened to me with any fragrance and I've tested over 200 of them. I still stand with the other anon at the position that phases are mostly bogus unless proven otherwise.

Nowadays yes, fragrances are mostly linear aromachemical soups which more or less have the same scent character for their duration. However, that doesn't change the fact that there are many different aromachemicals used in any given composition, all with differing evaporation rates which correspond with the "top, middle, base" label. Do you mean to tell me the bright calone-dihydromyrcenol opening of Sauvage is still clearly discernible after 12 hours on skin?

Furthermore, go smell some vintage chypres like Yatagan, Grey Flannel, or Magie Noir and try to tell me that they stay exactly the same from when you spray it on to even two hours in.

That's not what I claim. The way the whole base, heart, head business is presented is that you're supposed to have 3 separate sets of aromas and each set morphs into the next one smoothly staying distinctively different for some time. The truth is there is couple of aromas that suppress linearly over time. For most of the time (but the very first minute or two) the fragrance stays the same though and smells of the most potent ones.

there's a story to be told. of good and evil. a cosmic schism, a wild funnel where the point of singularity, the final escape is only the beginning. the story is true and it's become a cold tale told in warm places. a story of the eater and the eaten. people speak of ysl. yes, they speak of the house and it's cherished, it's glistenings. of it's revered, always it's revered with that air of sophistication, of softness and care. something complacent and beautiful and has made a custom of turning it's back on it's wicked dealings, it's past it hopes to forget in the silence of death. this has become futile, because in the years since the tremor has only become more violent, and in these years they've learned to disregard the hunger. they've starved it but is doesn't die. it only becomes hungrier... and in it's place they've become a symbol of regality, of sterile streamlined luxury in a white room. le vestiaire des parfums they call it. simplicity and elegance. a swooning dance in sweeping silk on a bed of vapors... a dream even. all in vain because it's been fed only the best, and it's never known a want. it's slept ceaslessly, carelessly above the earth where at it's center spins in pangs of hunger and fury, of agony something brutish. they say it may come later. but later is now, the hour is now. it's been a matter of then but not now and then is now and now has been here forever... and they say to always remember that saying said only in the dark: "Tuxedo is the mother, Kouros is the wolf."
