Hi guys.

I am a newfag here and I need could really use recommendation. I'm looking to buy a watch. Ideally a would like a sports watch that also looks good (not like a fucking tool for running nerds). I lift a lot and I could use the watch at the gym for tracking stuff and so on. Also, I would appreciate it if it also looked rather good (that is if it's possible to combine those 2 aspects). I was looking into Garmin watches (something along the line of Forerunner 235 HR) but I don't know. Halp

Bugdet: 200 - 300 USD/Euro. I could add some more if it was really worth it,
Bracelet: Nylon I guess?
Wrist size: I don't really know but not big (I am a wristlet).

I've got both Komandirskie and Amphibia Classic models. They're incredible value and you can find some aesthetically pleasing designs without too much effort.

Pros:
>Every part of the watch made in-house
>Durable af
>Interesting history
>High degree of customisation (bezel, dial, hands, crown etc etc)
>Head of design ships orders personally if you buy from the official factory store
>Scratched glass costs less than a beer to replace

Cons:
>Cyka delivery times

Sinn has bad quality control from what I've seen on forums, that is strike 2, strike 1 is them being a german brand in 2019 and having to overpower my natural urges to not send any money to that country. For 1.3-1.5k I don't really need a strike 3. It's a shame because I don't care about tudor, oris, fredrique constant would be great if they sized their shit down, omega would be cool but their marketing and consumer base is so fucking gay it hurts, ball isn't that cool under 2k, etc. The 104 should be a sweet spot but I'm not dealing with these kraut motherfuckers and the refugee they probably have assembling it

they would faun over a watch like this calling it a classic, a grail or whatever. then you could literally have this watch with the exact same movement and specs but instead have the logo read AX American Exchange and it would be brushed off as a gaudy fast fashion watch for guidos

Please suggest a durable ladies watch for me:

Budget: $1-150
Watch type: simple analog, nothing crazy feminine looking. Just a simple, smaller field type watch
Bracelet type: rubber or metal
Watch size: no larger than 38mm

I live in a rural area and spend a lot of time helping hubby with various mechanical/messy tasks. We own two dogs and travel a lot, so I need something that can handle some knocking around.

if you'd like an automatically winding clockwork watch, look for a seiko snk809 (or snk803 for a cream dial, there are a few more dial colours)

the strap that watch comes in is bad, so buy a 5 buck springbar tool that makes changing straps easy, and then buy yourself a rubber or silicone aftermarket strap you think would suit it

If you want quartz movement instead of clockwork, there's much more choice for you, look at bertucci, marathon, or the citizen BM8180, sadly these are all masculine designs, but maybe that's not a problem?

LCD watches are cheap and durable too, check out the casio w86 or f-91w pastel colour range (pic related

This, of course, is in no way related to the exorbitant marketing budgets of established "luxury" watch brands that account for most of what people are actually paying for. I'm not implying that these companies are hiring literal shills to badmouth an esteemed company whose watches far exceed those in quality that are rather focusing on sponsorships than innovation.

>The Rolex Submariner needs no introduction. It's the design people sketch if asked to draw a watch. It's made by the most valuable watch brand in the world. Today, a non-date Submariner retails at £5,450, not an inconsiderable amount. But there's something else that catches the eye, something very similar: the Tudor Heritage Black Bay. At £2,630, it's less than half the price of the Rolex. It also, since 2016, has a manufacturer movement. The question is: is it better than a Rolex Submariner?

A few things you need to know. I'm assuming 'Brosnan Era' refers to the mechanical Seamaster 300m which was powered by the Omega cal. 1120 (basically the ETA movement), since Brosnan wore the quartz version in Goldeneye.

Regarding the 1120:
1) It is chronometer certified (COSC), so after service it will hold somewhere between -4/+6 per day. When mine came back from servicing, it was dead on 0/0, but the 1120 is still susceptible to positional rate differences, so now I leave it dial up overnight to gain for the loss it takes on my wrist. I haven't had to set it in 3 months, and the only thing I have to do is advance the date on the 30-month days. The movement is a workhorse, and anyone can service it.

2) The bracelet is considered the most comfortable one Omega ever made. It doesn't pull hairs, it slides like ice, and it looks awesome if you haven't scratched the hell out of it. The only downside is that it doesn't really have an easy microadjustment system; everything is pinned, so the best thing to do is get it sized correctly at a dealer/independent.

3) It's instantly recognizable, aesthetically pleasing to some, and very easy to read. The lume is perfect (though the skeleton hands make it less useful at a distance). If you take it diving like I do, then it'll do the job without a problem; just make sure to service the gaskets every year to be sure you won't flood the watch.

Do a search on Chrono24 to get a rough idea of prices so you can know where in the ballpark your dealer is.

As I said, it is 'aesthetically pleasing to some'. For a generation, this watch was the 'entry level' luxury watch, so in some ways it's very desirable if you can get one in good condition. Also, this was before the change to the coaxial movement, so servicing isn't as costly nor does it have to be done by Omega.

I guess it's like many watches; your eyes tell you what you want, and if it sings to you when you put it on, then it's the right buy. Mine has gone through a lot with me, so I'm more sentimental to it...but I guess that's what happens when you have a watch for more than 20 years...

Yeah, the bracelet is a huge part of why I'm interested in the watch, I've handled them before and they're really nice. I also really like the way the links have a slight "dome" to them. Also yeah, the mechanical version that he wore in the later movies, I didn't realize the Goldeneye one was quartz. I'm not hugely stuck on any exact model either, I just want the general style and I'd prefer blue but black would be alright too.

I'll have to ask my guy to get in touch with the seller and get more details and a price, he didn't know a ton. He wouldn't be acting as a dealer here, he's just a service guy who happens to know one guy who wants to sell the watch and another who's interested in buying it. From what he said, though, he thought it'd be in the low 1k range, which is a pretty great deal if it's the right watch in the right condition, judging by what I see on Chrono24 at least.

Perhaps not mainland. In the UK, it was a no.1 seller for Omega, and to this day you'll see it on riders of the Tube, second only to the Speedy.

In the US and Canada it was also a best seller for Omega, but perhaps more for the Bond connection and the price-point than anything else. You have to remember; at this time in history, this watch was about 1/3 or 1/4 of the price of the Rolex Submariner, so if you were a starting businessman and you wanted a 'nice watch' to fit in, this one worked. Bond also forced the issue of this watch being worn with a tuxedo, which traditionally dive watches were not supposed to, so the average person saw this as the dress-up/dress-down watch. All purpose, essentially waterproof, and Bond wears it. So, why not? lol

>>14508240
A little polemic, but some of your points are dead on. First, Omega isn't trash...they're mid-tier. Their marketing is definitely cringe, no argument there. Their consumer base does spend a lot of time and words in the manner you describe, but consider that Rolex is what every mid-tier watch company compares itself to, and for good reason. Rolex has perfected the art of mass producing fine timepieces; no one has even come close to the volume and quality control.

I personally think Rolexes are better engineered and internally designed than Omegas, but I do not like the outer aesthetic of Rolexes save their older models.

Still, I think it's lacking precision to critique a brand/company based on the behavior of their consumers. Omega provides watches, and people buy them.

On the other hand, mechanical watches are status symbols, so perhaps the behavior of the consumers should be taken into account because that's what the watch is for. In the digital age, we don't need these things at all, so to wear one is to send a public message of a kind. Same with a gold Rolex, or a Destro Panerai.

I don't know really...one could go on either side.

I'd love a Rolex but the prices are in completely different ballparks. A nice used Seamaster is totally attainable for me, even a ratty Sub isn't right now. I also have an attachment to the Seamaster because of the whole Bond thing, I'm the right age to have grown up with the Brosnan movies and I've always been into watches so naturally I really lusted after his watch as a kid/teenager.

Not the other fella but honestly in some ways the omega is a little closer to the old subs in the Connery movies. Back then those were nice very nice but still affordable tool watches that nobody but bond would dream of parking with a tux. Itd almost very like wearing a metal gshock square with a suit nowadays

Well, make sure you try it on and see how it looks on your wrist. The watch is surprisingly thin for the width, so it's like wearing a rather large and heavy coin on your wrist. But the steel band is hefty enough so that the watch doesn't feel top heavy in the slightest.

If it's in the low 1k range USD, then it's definitely a steal, but then you have to ask why it's so low. Does it need a service (Omega servicing is in the 800$ range)? Is the face faded out because of too much sun light? Is the bezel in shit condition due to knocks and scrapes?

As you saw on Chrono24, the lowest range for this watch starts around 2500USD. If the seller did his research, surely he'd know this. So I'd be skeptical, and I'd be sure to have your guy open up the watch to determine how the movement is in terms of lubrication and need for service. The last thing you want to do is think you got a deal but then find out you have to service it.

One other thing to know about these Seamasters; the second hand has red paint at the tip, and this red paint fades away to white with sun exposure after a few decades. Mine has been preserved because it doesn't see sun unless I'm diving, but most older ones I've seen have white second hand tips rather than red. It's just one of those details you notice.

Good luck with the whole thing. I'll never get rid of mine ever, not only because it performs well but because it always works for my lifestyle. It fits under collared shirt cuffs without problems, you can switch out the band for leather straps (or sharkskin, which is what I have it on in summer), and quite honestly it's a no-bother watch.

No watch will fill the empty void. You'll get it, be happy for a few weeks, and then feel like you need something else.

Keep the Rolex in mind, but consider connecting with nature more often. Hike if you can, exercise outdoors if you can, stand in the rain if you need to. Watch the animals, listen to the birds, and remember that you're an animal too.

Buying things doesn't fill a void, it just makes the void bigger.

Maybe I'm seeing the wrong models, but there seem to be a quite a few on there in the sub-2k range, I was seeing as low as 1,300 for a decent-looking 41mm. Maybe they're not exactly the right models or something, not sure but I'm alright as long as it's reasonably close, I don't care if it's the exact year or caliber or whatever as long as it's reasonably close.

The quartz versions go for sub2k. You'll get the same look, but obviously it's not mechanical. The issue of 'not exactly the right model' is dead on; the other thing to take into consideration is that with this model they had different sizes as well, and I think there was a ladie's version if I'm not mistaken.

So, you have a few different sizes, and you have the difference between the mechanical or quartz. As I said, it was a very popular model.

Be advised for the future; the prices and value of watches are all tied to two basic things: the precise model, and the condition of that model with regards to original parts. It'll be expensive if it's all original, it'll be cheaper if it has replacement parts. It'll be expensive if it's in good condition, and it'll be cheaper if it's been abused.

As for the calibre, this is very important to consider. The Seamasters used in the Brosnan era relied on the ETA movement which at the time was supplied to just about everyone in that price point, but after that the coaxial was put inside instead, which lowered the beat rate, increased the cost of servicing while limiting the people who could service it properly, and for the first generation (25xx cal.) had serious problems.

Other details included in the switchover to the coaxial: rims surrounding the hour markers, eventually red text, different length minute hands plus different lume colours for minute and hour hands, and other things along the way.

The watch you want is the Omega Seamaster 2541.80.00. Anything else is not the watch you're looking for.

They insist on using brand ambassadors that are themselves somewhat cringy (George Clooney et al). They tout the benefits of a coaxial yet their service times are the same as they were with the older lever escapements (which defeats the purpose), they don't trumpet the Master Chronometer for the technological advances to the movements as much as they do the process of testing them, they make 'limited' editions of the Speedmaster faster than the weeds grow in my lawn, they were advertising the relaunch of the cal. 321 even though it's a cal. 321 'for the modern era' (which means changes and thus not a cal. 321)....should I go on?

It's nice for them to have the Olympic connection that they're holding on to for dear life...but aside from that, most of it is cringeworthy.

>>14508395
I disagree heavily with this statement. The problem with >>14508315 is the fact that there is a void to begin with. Filling a void in life with something lifeless doesn't fill the void. Furthermore, a Rolex isn't necessarily the best-in-slot item at all.
