Let's discuss hats. Suppose you were given this style of hat for free. What would you wear it with? How is your approach to wearing a brimmed hat?

Hats can be very functional for holding some stuff up top, if the brim is stiff enough. Supposedly, even Abraham Lincoln put envelopes and notes inside of his tall top hat.

18th century and 19th century round hats could look very similar, too. There is no crease, usually, just a round domed crown. Some similar hats are also flat on top, like Spanish bolero hats, and others have more of a round-flat combination, or a gambler hat telescope crown.

You could buy a Bushman hat by the company Akubra. There is a U.S. retailer called David Morgan that sells them, which is where I bought mine. You could even shape your hat exactly like that one. The only issue is that Bushman hats have small little metal grommets, like ventilation holes, around the base of the hat by the thin ribbon. Otherwise, it would be great for reproducing the look of that picture's hat. The Akubra Bushman starts off open crown, but you could shape it telescope style and then add in the slight front pinched effect that hat has. The price for the Bushman ranges between 140-220 or so, based on some places I've seen them sold at, still a great deal for durable fur felt hats.

To get your new hat to look like one of theirs, simply let it get exposed to the rain a lot, or your shower water, and allow it to collect dust while dry while going on hikes. I'm not exactly sure how to get it more quickly than that, but they seem like they're experts on hat distressing.

Stylistically, I think it is similar, although it may not be exactly what you're going for. However, you might consider getting the Traveller hat, by Akubra, an Australian company that makes good quality and affordable rabbit felt hats. The Traveller has a lightweight rabbit felt, and apparently, it could even be "crushable," although I'm afraid to try it with my hats.

I thought it was worth commenting on that one aspect of the picture of the Hasidic guy. OP here. I have a tweed one in a beige flecked with grey, brown, and green color; pic-related is it, but it appears either lighter or darker depending upon the lighting (Indoors, outdoors). It goes with seemingly almost any of my clothes. I enjoy wearing it, but it's pretty hot now. I should buy a linen newsboy cap. I agree that they do work for a lot of clothes, and I especially like the way they look with leather jackets in my collection, as well as anything else. For those wanting a clerical style brimmed hat, this post will be of interest. I don't know about the elaborate golden trim the hat has in place of a standard ribbon or band, but in addition to black, you could still get a white or beige wool or fur felt clerical broad brimmed hat from this site. I have seen this same vendor operating on eBay, selling the same hats, as well. I have never bought from them, yet, but there appears to be some levels of customization involved, such as picking the color.

Nice. I wore mine today while outdoors. I shaped mine like this picture, but I keep the brim bent up, usually, sometimes down for a little more sun protection. It's a very functional and well-made hat, I think, and has held up very good over the past few years.

Usually, wool hats come pre-shaped, unless the intention behind the design is the leave them open crowned (bowler looking). Fur felt hats are usually shaped, too, but are more often available in open crown form for you to shape yourself. I think it is often considered difficult to shape an open crown wool hat, compared to fur felt, but I have never tried it, myself. Maybe use lots of steam from a tea kettle to achieve the shape you would like!

>> No.14488681

I need to add: if you are only asking about shaping brims, that is easier to do than shaping the top of the hat, most of the time. I would still try to use steam from a tea kettle, or at least gently wetting the hat with shower or sink water, many people even recommend distilled water instead, but I have had good luck with the former methods.

its not too hard to shape your hat, just dampen it with steam (i use steam from an iron) and pinch/round out where you want. you can use the iron on a low/medium setting to set pinches or whatever as well. during the drying process you may need to use things to maintain the pinches and creases so they maintain the shape

I was thinking that maybe you could pull it off in a similar fashion, especially when you put some decorative pins on it?
I have done my research now and i can confirm that the hunter's hats do look more like the one in your picture.
I also found a Trachtenhut that has the telescope crown (pic related), however it is traditionally worn by the bierfahrer (people that used to transport beer barrels in horse carriages).
Trachtenhüte can still vary somewhat in shapes, colors, materials and sizes though and i don't think that there's a specific ruleset on what to wear anymore.

In some of the older movies, James Bond used to sometimes be seen wearing or throwing onto a hatrack a brown or black trilby. I think it is the kind of thing that could come back for a newer movie, due to somewhat of a resurgence of brimmed hats in fashion, but the hat style should be a sensible choice, probably of a plain and unostentatious design. I'm thinking a moderate-width grey trilby with a tapered crown might be featured in a future movie, if they decide to bring back the hatrack scene.

What do you fellows think of top hats? I think they are nice looking, but what kinds of legitimate functions could they be used for, nowadays? I know in Britain there is a royal ascot event that they are often worn to by attendees, and some people choose to wear them at weddings with morning coats or tailcoats, and occasionally a dinner jacket, but that's about all I can think of, apart from serious hobbyists that insist upon wearing one to other functions that they are not normally called upon for. Height out of the top (crown), you mean? The brim is the sides of the hat, determining how wide or narrow it is. Anyway, if you wanted the top hat to be shorter on top, maybe turned into a hat like pic-related (a little shorter maybe than it is, currently, but not too much), it might be possible if a hat shop owner is willing to help out with the project, or if you are able to be skilled enough to accomplish it yourself. This picture is a little shorter than most top hats, and maybe a decent to skilled hatter could accomplish shortening the crown, for you, so that it looks a little more "John Bull," and less "Abraham Lincoln" looking, if that makes sense.

I'm thirty and wearing hats. I don't see any problems with starting at a younger age than fifty. There are some unspoken rules that even non-hat wearers might be intrinsically aware of, though, such as wearing a hat indoors too long (unless you are just coming through, although this seems to be a declining societal rule), or wearing a certain type of hat with clothes not fitting its context, such as a fedora with shorts, although maybe a wide-brimmed fedora could pass as outback/cowboy looking enough to just get by well enough, and straw fedoras are widely considered correct for that, anyway. It's honestly up to you, not even these rules are stopping somebody who dares to defy them.

All right. For what it's worth, I wore a hat of mine inside the house for a few hours, because I was by myself, and I was going in and out of the house at times, while the sun was hot outside. It mostly came down to not seeing a point to remove it, yet, and I didn't want to have to deal with my newfound hat hair condition, with rinsing in the sink, drying off, and using a comb to make the misshapen hair look normal again. Sometimes, it's fine to wear one indoors, but when here are gatherings of other people, it is usually consider more polite to remove it after a while of being indoors, if you know you're going to stick around. Just passing through, it's fine, like a public building for example, too.

I mostly dress business/smart casual, with either dark blue jeans, khaki, or olive pants. Occasionally, dress trousers of wool get worn, including a full suit, although I wear sports jackets a lot more often than a full suit, and more so, casual jackets like canvas and leather ones. I enjoy my tan Bushman hat, and I think I may just get the black one, as it has the same specifications, and it could hold up for rainy and snowy weather very well. Plus, I think that the color black has the potential to go with almost anything. This is what the hat looks like, unshaped open crown, similar to that other hat posted above, but I think it has more of an up-turned brim shape; a 3 1/4" brim width and 5 1/2" open crown height, whereas the other is a 3" brim and 5" open crown. I think I might shape it into a gambler hat style, like I did with my tan one, and as seen in the OP pic.

You could probably find one you're after at the Village Hat Shop web store. In addition to flat caps and newsboy caps, they also sell baseball caps of many different variations.

I think that a less extreme cocking of the brim might still work. Tricornes have the potential to look kind of cowboy hat. Maybe wear a modern linen shirt and waistcoat with it, and perhaps a canvas jacket. As long as the tricorn is not especially wide, it could still look OK, or even good.

Yeah, it's hot where I am, too. I wear moderate to broad brimmed straw hats more, these days, when spending more than a few minutes outdoors. Any kind of cap would just leave one's ears, neck, and most of the face exposed, so I would not recommend it unless one moderates their time out in the sun this hot.

w2c hat similar to this
Horisaki too expensive, I would DIY it but need a good model to start with
Maybe bushman in black? Would prefer without the side vent/strap holes and with a raw edge

That's cool. They probably prefer their ventilated styles for the hotter times of the year, if not straw hats!

I think this is a good recommendation for you, if you are willing to spend around 200 dollars.

https://www.stakerhats.com/product/build-your-own-10x-hat/

The hat you want looks to have a very wide brim, anywhere between 4 to 5 inches, although I 5 inches on a lot of guys goes straight across the ends of their shoulders. I would go with a 4 inch brim. Here is a plan I have worked out for you, in order to get something close, but there is one caveat; if you choose the standard brim option (unless you email this hat maker about what you really want the brim to look like instead, like flat as you seem to prefer), it will have somewhat rolled cowboy hat sides. Now, here is your plan mapped out:

Roll: No
Distressing: No
Bound Brim: No (You want a raw edge)
Color: Black (It's up to you, I just picked that as an example)
Crown: 5.5 inch (It is as high as the Akubra Bushman, so it could look like your pic)
Brim Width: 4 inch (Could go with any)
Brim Shape: Standard (If you look at side pic of basic crown creases, standard is slightly rolled, but could be steamed with a tea kettle to be flatter when you get it, or you could just email him saying you want a flat Boss of the Plains raw edge kind of brim shape)
Size: (It's up to you, measure with a flexible tape measurer, but it's better to have a slightly loose hat than a little too tight, and you could always pad the looseness behind the leather interior sweatband with a napkin, or better, a felt sizing pad to stuff it with)
Grosgrain-Ribbon: (Your picture looks like it doesn't really have one, but you could go with a thin or somewhat wide ribbon if you want to, or even the self band as seen at the bottom, which might just replace the idea of the grosgrain ribbon)
Crown Crease: I would pick Tycoon crease, if you don't want to pick Open for open crown hand-shaping it yourself)
Self-Band: No?

Should I get a beanie or a cap to wear year round?
I feel the cap would be better for my outfits but it would look out of place in the winter?

>> No.14507688

>>14506911
It probably depends on the way it looks, such as the fabric. Beanies/watch caps look more winter-like, I think, but they could still be worn any time you want to, yet make the least sense during bad heat.

I recommend checking a particular Etsy shop profile to see authentic 18th century hats, with tricorns, bicorns, round hats, and more. Qualities vary from the cheaper wool and more expensive fur felt hats.

I can't write the name of the link here, as 4chan thinks that I am spamming. However, on Etsy, search for "Historicalhattergeo," and you should find the shop's profile page.

Only ever see older (40+) women in straw hats at the beach. Younger ones are constantly in felt Akubras. See them on hikes & at parks a fair bit too.

I think it's just aussie culture, nobody will think you're weird for wearing a hat like that unless you're wearing it to and from an office or shopping etc. Our ANZACs are pretty ingrained in our national identity too so most people aren't gonna find hats of that style weird regardless.

Let's do our parts to wear them. I tend to prefer styles that fall in-between fedora and cowboy hat in looks, but I own both kinds, as well. I'm also starting to get some more newsboy cap styles. I have influenced a few people in the past to buy hats, incidentally, on the basis of having been seen wearing and pulling off various hats in my collection.

>>14509658
You're welcome! If that is too expensive, I am pretty sure that looking around on eBay or Etsy for a wide-brimmed felt or straw hat might get you something close to that style, if maybe not exactly what it looks like.
