>walk around local mall with family
>a small business fine jewelry store that's been around for 20+ years is starting to close down
>another local fine jewelry store is empty except for 1 or 2 old ladies

Do younger generations not wear fine jewelry anymore because of being expensive as fuck, or is it the style? Even if fine jewelry was affordable, would millenials wear them?

Is jewelry just overrated?

at least the ones in the picture just look pretty tacky. I guess diamonds, or jewels in general are not really in fashion at the moment, especially the jewelry with shit loads of them. But what do I know, I'm a man.

Ausfag here.

I see a lot of people with jewellery from simple chains & rings to thick Cuban link druglord looking stuff.
I mainly see "diamond" stuff for rings & earrings.
Both men & women.

I think the reason why the fine jewelry industry is dying is because its tied to a lifestyle.

In the past, boomers could afford going to fancy places and occasions all the time. Boomer women were also mostly housewifes and didnt travel much.

Millennials are more interested in traveling and taking pictures of their journey, so they prefer simplistic subtle jewelry, like charm bracelets. Also, women today are working in many different industries.

It's not so much the money, (since younger gens are willing to blow money on music festivals and limited edition clothing collections) but what's considered more meaningful to spend that money on.

This generation doesn't like that tacky boomer shit. I think most people into jewerly are into the craftsmenship and design rather than loud dated designs, hence the popularity of chrome hearts

I was shopping for a wedding ring one time. Didn't pick anything out, went to visit my parents. They had a goddamn box full of generations of inherited jewelery. About 150+ years of ice and gold sitting around unused. This shit piles up, why would you buy it?

i always feel like its along the same line as those cabinets full of "very expensive plates and glasses" every old person seems to own. grandma I'm sorry but if you hand me off your ten pound sterling earrings and gaudy necklaces i'm taking them to a pawn shop and getting the 20 bucks they're worth

to be honest I always thought just making jewelry would be a lot cooler than paying assbackwards mall outlet prices. you can buy a crucible, a mapp gas torch, and graphite ring molds and do whatever you want

Jewelry was a way to transfer funds across international borders legally without incurring fees.

While this is still somewhat necessary in certain situations, other vehicles, like bitcoin and fine art, are being employed that eat into a JEWeler's profits.

But, yeah, millennials can't afford shit.

Silver is currently trading at $15 an ounce so 10 pounds will net you a lot more than 20 bucks.

this younger generation, if you look at the generational wealth cycle, does not have a lot of money to spend.

hence, luxury goods store go out of business

say we were born in an era of rebuilding the world after large wars, we would have been doing a bit better wealth wise.

many young people are in debt, barely scraping by, or living with their parents. they're not thinking about buying jewelry.

Two things.
1. Millenials are conditioned to buy cheap, fake garbage they can toss away 3 months later. The simple thought of buying something that is lasting forever and cost more because of this seems stupid to them.
2. Changing times. 20 Years ago you could wear good stuff (in germany at least) and nobody cared. Today you got to fear that someone will take it as a great opportunity to rob you. Be it one of the millenial "give me everything" commies or some of the "new citizens" we have, nobody feels save enough to wear expensive stuff. And why should you buy stuff you cant wear? My mother often told me that in the past on funerals and so on you could see the rich wearing fur and diamonds. And when she finally was well off enough to buy a cheap real fur coat nobody wore them anymore. Imagine how pissed she was about saving for years to be able to afford one and be part of "the crowd" only to see how not dressing well became the norm.
