You don't actually have to service it after 5 year. Do it after 10 years instead, or better yet just wear it till it breaks, then buy a new.

It's weird. The only ones who tend to drive nice cars (despite what the internet and instagram want you to believe) are those who want to look rich. As that anon in the other thread was talking about, people buy them as a way to 'save' their money.
My parents drive rather boring Audis but when rich people get to a certain point, they just go back to driving the high trims on regular ass cars. It's really only the wives I've seen who drive the super nice shit.
The most popular vehicle for people who make over $1m a year is the Ford F-150. My father drove one for years (a nice model) but only got rid of it when he started getting older and bought into the old-man luxury shit.
For the record, despite being able to absolutely afford it, he doesn't like Rolex's. He prefers Citizen. He does own one or two but thinks they are junk for everyday use and require too much maintenance. He has an Omega he will wear to meetings and special events.

I paid $10k for a pair of MAC 11s last year. Sold them for about $13k. If you aren't a dipshit guns are a great investment and you can make money, just don't be a fucking fudd about it.
Hell, my company has a few full-auto ARs (I'm not explaining how SOTs work here) that we paid about $900 for and converted ourselves. We made our money back on them through rentals in a weekend.
Those who harp about guns not being worth anything or depreciating buy stupid shit like boutique ARs or "custom" 1911s/Glocks/Berettas. I have a custom AR but it was built by my pro shop at cost for me. It isn't worth what I paid but I also didn't spend $15+ on it.

It happened multiple times and each time I had to reset everything from the date to the time. I switched to a mechanical Seiko I had and never had that problem again. If that's not an argument for mechanical watches I don't know what is. Fast forward many years later to today, I wear a very nice older Rolex but have no delusions about its accuracy. Like many enthusiasts, watch autists like myself are driven by emotion rather than reason. There's something about a nice vintage watch with great pedigree, having the original box and paperwork that came with it the day it was bought 40 years ago, and taking care of it by getting it serviced and keeping records of its maintenance. Real pride in ownership and all that. Well, that's just my .02 at least.

tl;dr all hobbies are based on emotion, watches are no different.

Mechanical watches are susceptible to other forms of electromagnetism. I did have a Seiko myself for something similar. Quartz watches are far less susceptible to stuff like that because while they are electronic, they are not reliant on circuit boards. Once you learn more about how quarts movement actually works, they are far more complex than any mechanic watch (though easier to manufactur) and the phyaics at play is interesting as hell.

The AT and the 300 is on a slightly higher level of finish if that makes any difference to you. Also I will mention that the 300 is a lot bigger than the rest of them. It's a huge watch. The BB58 is a lot better size for divers if you ask me. The AT and the OP is a lot more versatile, you can have them dressed up and dressed down. The divers are more casual.

I was trying on the 300 and it was a chunk of metal but I do feel its alot of watch for the money, ceramic, adjustable clasp and the movement over the 58 but the 58 is classicly sized. The AT has no quick set and the polished links put me off. The OP is really nice but idk it's not a Rolex unless it has the cathedral hands. I think I'm leaning towards the 300.

Yeah sort of...the thing is, you framed the question as what is essentially a shitter in the minds of /wt/ posters versus a Speedmaster. I’m not super familiar with Fortis but it looks like the watch you’re looking at is around $1200. For a daily beater the Fortis would almost certainly be better...the Speedmaster is fragile in just about every measurable way. But from a purely horological perspective they aren’t even in the same conversation. Btw, I agree with the other anon who said get a Sinn chrono if you don’t want to buy the Speedy. And there are reasons not to want one...if you want a sapphire crystal and water resistance for example.

Basically most of the stuff I end up liking in this pilot/tool/field/military chrono category ends up being $1-2k. I like the Speedy but I know I wouldn't wear it daily. However there's the issue of it being pretty dumb to spend half of the price of a "real" watch on a "shitter", so...

It feels like I need to buy the Speedy first, put it in a box, and then start saving up for the real watches I want.

That doesn't even touch the issue that I'm probably too old to wear these non-serious-looking watches in the first place.

Yeah I agree. I own a modern Speedmaster and you could write a book about the movement changes since the original and the underhanded marketing practices by Omega when it comes to the moonwatch. Still, even though it’s not the original movement, the watch itself has undeniable appeal from a design and historical standpoint. Plus the newer movements stand on their own merits IMO. Obviously I’d like to see the 321 brought back at a reasonable price point (which they will upcharge to an insane degree) for the real historical sticklers out there, but we have what we have.
>>14402643
I understand the feeling. It’s why I’ve stopped buying cheap watches entirely, because in the back of my mind I’m thinking about how all it will do is take me further away from buying a watch I really want to buy down the line. I wish I had a solution for you. You could always just buy a used Speedy and then if you regret it later you can sell it without being out of much money. There’s a lot of pressure to buy one in the watch community because it’s “the” entry level chronograph, but if you don’t love it then there’s really no need to drop the cash on it. FWIW I really enjoy mine, but I was never cross-shopping with more robust tool chronos and had been wanting to buy one for a couple years prior.

You are absolutely correct. There’s nothing more dumb than spending less on frivolous things when there’s always better.

By the way, don’t forget the buy a rolls royce before the actual car you’re gonna use and need.

Oh and don’t forget to purchase a manor or a villa before your actual house.

I’m glad to see our brain and thinking are not tainted by peasants who can’t manage economy.

I have the tangente 130 which is extremely similar, just 37.5mm and without a power reserve and with a slightly larger date window. Essentially same movement. Love the watch. No quick set date is obnoxious, you have to wind backwards from midnight to around 9, then forward again past midnight. No big deal for a couple days but you don’t want to do it 15 or 20 times. One thing you might not realize in the pictures is that the power reserve bar is red when it needs to be wound which means most of the time it’ll just be a white circle, which looks a little strange.
