It should work yeah, google "post punk fashion", might find some inspiration.
If you like the way Ian/Joy Divison/New Order dressed you might like Iceage and Elias Ronnonfelt's style, its similar but slightly modernised and maybe slightly less formal.
But honestly if you look like an adult you can just dress the way Ian did, its not that out of place in most modern settings really.
It does depend a bit on where you live and what you spend your time doing, I find at uni I'd be overdressed compared to everyone else in shitty athleisure wear if I rock up in anything more formal that jeans and a casual shirt.
