Can you get away with grabbing some surplus from your local army navy store or can it just not be tweaked enough to actually look good in a public setting?

/k/ here. depending on where you are it might be hard to get actual milsurp. most stores sell shitty repros. I heard LA has a huge fucking scene for milsurp stores

Military surplus works when it doesn’t look overly technical. Olive t-shirt, navy watch cap, olive or khaki chinos, an olive military jacket without too many pockets/zippers and epaulets. A simple camo t-shirt can look good if the rest of the outfit is basic
