Total newfag but it seems to me the major distinction between goth/vamp and formal wear is pattern. Well texture and pattern but mostly pattern. A velvet dress shirt could still be /sleaze/ but if it had a subtle floral patter than it would be undeniably goth.

You can't go full goth without "overdoing" it by common standards. I'd say the closest you can get without looking like a speg is inspired fits, e.g. charcoal worsted trousers and a velvet jacket, over a white shirt open or with a cravat instead of a tie. That will already look eccentric to a lot of people but nobody will think you're larping as Alucard.

Been thinking about this a lot myself. First and foremost no cheap costume shit from online shops name "Gothio" or some shit. Material and construction must be excellent. I really like people's suggestions of Loki and Alucard but this is mostly just black formal wear(that's fine).

There is an intrinsic hurdle to this that nobody has mentioned though. Is that in virtually all forms of media and literature, vampires are dressed for cold, night weather. I mean, OF COURSE they are. But how would one pull of a so called vampire look on a hot summer day? or even warm spring? Or most other times of the year? The reason why so many people have struggled with this aesthetic and "not overdoing it" is because "overdoing it" fit the temperature and weather of the setting. When did you ever see a vampire wearing shorts?

Something else worth thinking about. When people think of "vampire fashion" they are often thinking of Bram Stroker's Dracula film aesthetic or Symphony of the Night stuff. Elegant and refined Barque and Rococo stuff. But another direction that can be taken is the Nosferatu route, which I think could make a person genuinely look frightening and intimidating. Shaven head and grey and black thrifted clothes. Some interesting stuff could be done with this direction in mind.
