This thread is about the appreciation of stunning timepieces, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning stunning timepiece. Unless you make 200K you aren't welcome in here.

What are some complications that are worth getting? We have talked about chronos in the other thread. Also a diving bezel as a makeshift timer. Date is obvious and power reserve can be handy to show if something is fucky with the mechanism.

At first I was obsessed with the IWC Mark XVIII, but it's 4k for an ETA movement. But then I discovered this Sinn 556i that is extremely similar, as well as having a Sellita movement that's an ETA clone, but this one is 1,000.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the Sinn in a couple months. Is 1,000 good for this watch and movement?

I’m looking for a watch that is (hopefully) around the entry-level mark and has pilot/navy styling. It doesn’t matter too much what the movement is, but I’d be fine with just quartz. Dark face preferred, with at least a date complication. Other useful complications would be a plus.

I agree that it's not as quick to operate the bezel as on the usual diver watch, but I apreciate the aesthetics, technology and history behind the so-called supercompressor watches. The way the internal sloped bezel blends in with the rest of the dial behind under the glas makes it so different from the usual diver, that it could even pass for a dress watch.
Also the fact, you have to unscrew a crown to operate the bezel under the sea makes it more difficult to operate it by mistake, resulting in less oxygen time for the diver... I know it's LARPing but that was actually one of the ideas behind the concept.

I have a 43mm Tisell that I got for my birthday. The dial is nice and sharp, but the rotor is LOOOOUD and the winding feels scratchy, maybe it is supposed to be this way, dunno. I wear it on weekends, but feels that much more special, overall Im happy with it. For 250 with a sapphire and steel blued hands you cannot go wrong.

LaCo: good price, heritage, definitely the most rugged and tooly look true to the original with the bead blasted finish and shape, different case options

Stowa: higher price, perhaps more of a jewel than a tool because of prettier cases, movement can be decorated if thats your thing, also heritage

Archimede: some say better quality than Stowa for a similar or bit higher price, no personal experience, thinner cases than most

Steinhart: medium price, some interesting options in case types, movement can be decorated, afaik they only make 44+mm sizes, some watch snobs scoff at them

Aristo: looks and feels like a cheap chinkshit copy you could get on a flea market, long flat lugs, avoid

Geckota: interesting proposition in 40mm as well if thats your thing, smooth seiko movement, brushed case and polished bezel, non-blued hands. lurk about, because you may get a ridiculously good deal, Ive seen them go for 89-120 on uhrenbandversand while they were going for 300-400 in other shops

Some brands have bronze case options, blue sunburst dials, or faded dials with factory-weathered cases. If you prefer the vintage look, go with some of the original manufacturer, do not cheap out on heat blued hands. I have a 16,5cm (6,5in) wrist and can wear my 43 comfortably, good lug angle.

>> No.14309184

>>14309171
Thanks mate.
I know it doesn't matter, but I'd like it to be from Stowa or Laco or one of the original brands that made them for the German air force. Probably those two as IWC is expensive and ALS doesn't count.

What would you say if it came between those two for a vintage style pilot watch?

>> No.14309201

>>14309184
Depends on what you want of the watch, really. If you want the true original instrumental looks and are not afraid of the long flat lugs, go LaCo. If you want an elegant piece with form-fitting modern, downward lugs, polished case and jeweled movement with a type-a dial, go Stowa.

I’m really happy with my 37mm German made Aristo Titanium Flieger. The titanium case is in-house made, also used by Glashütte Original in the early 2000s. It’s very light and the ETA movement is incredibly precise. But this is not a current model and it’s hard to find.
I like Fliegers to use titanium because it comes closer to the matte metallic look of the original ones, which were actually not made of stainless steel but some Chrome-Nickel alloy IIRC. I also hate how it’s hard to find Flieger watches below 38mm.

It's not bad, as a watch. The 8500 series movement is excellent and it's a classy-looking piece without costing too much.
Like you said, you're already aware that it's pretty much just Asians who wear Constellations so if you live in an area that doesn't have a lot of them you might end up with a pretty unique watch.

The integrated bracelet means that getting straps for it is extremely challenging.

Anything less than 38mm should work. Some really vintage pieces are 36mm or lower. You might just have to forego any modern piece. Look around WW2 field watches or RAF pilots, hell even WW1 era wristwatches. You will have to pay out the ass, however, Im afraid. Strap options will be limited and most likely the mechanism as well for manual wind only.
Or you could try and push your luck with a Mondaine, their womens models are fairly nondescript and keep the same design as their bigger counterparts.

Lug design and case thiccness is also a factor on how a watch sits.

I completely agree on their redditness. It really turned me off the brand as well. I think they seem reddit because of their affected "quirky" image, and how manchildren take to that sort of thing on reddit.

I would avoid the speedy as well. They've basically become upscale soiboi jewelry in the last couple of years. Most of them shouldn't even wear one because their 5" wrists can't wear a speedy without severe lug overhang.

GO is a good choice, though, but keep in mind how soft they are on the used market. They have some of the worst value retention among luxury brands, AFAIK.
