I used to think he was just a /lit/ meme but he's actually very good, even though I don't agree with much of his philosophical motivation. I have wondered for a while now why he wasn't more famous here, seeing how his entire life was centered around aesthetics and achieving the highest aesthetic experience possible.

He wasn't perfect, rather he reflected upon his condition, and set about the terms to change. He found the source of his insecurities, imperfections, and misery, then went about a means of finding a purpose - a will to live - even in the face of possible death, and as we all know, certain failure. Your average person fails, dwells on their shortcomings, and digs a deep hole into depression, one which they cannot climb out of. Mishima caught himself in the act of doing so, forged a purpose, and gruelingly climbed out from the hole. This isn't something groundbreaking and it's common sense, but most forget about this. Purpose doesn't just come to you. It has to be found, or created, or forged, or realized. From thereon, you have a will to live, and from thereon, you can pursue your purpose with all you have. He wrote of beautiful things, but also of tragedy.

Mishima knew the outcome, and was aware of the uncertainties, but carried on; for Mishima would rather die an honorable, brave, albeit "fanatic" than rot away in his room. You may not agree with him politically, I'm not sure if I do, but he is a respectable figure, and an admirable one.

Based, but aesthetics played a central role to all of this. His life mission and suicide was not just about a Nietzschean life-affirming perspective of creating your own meaning, but centered around the idea of aesthetic experience. To Mishima aesthetic experience, or great beauty, is able to be found both in the beautiful as well as the horrible. That's why The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is such a great book. It's why his death took on such a violent form. It's why tragedy played such an important role in his life. Aesthetics was not just the cataclysm through which he transformed himself, it was both the source and end of life for him. And for Mishima there was nothing more beautiful than dying in a brutal, tragic and incomprehensible way at the peak of your existence, making his staged suicide the ultimate aesthetic experience.

The combination of elegance with tragedy is beautiful. Where I am, people don't care for aestheticism. It's become "fluff", but I disagree, and believe in the benefits from implementing or consciously surrounding ourselves with some degree of aestheticism. My countrymen either don't care for our artistic past, despite stretching back into ancient times, and allow such beautiful and testamentary things to rot.

All of those who are interested in Mishima should undergo the steps to developing, or expanding, their knowledge on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to the arts or philosophy or whatnot. You can benefit tremendously, even if you don't think it can or ever will be applied, but you'll come to appreciate beauty, and the beauty of our surroundings, and spot it.
