Leather jackets as we know them today were truly born out of the 30's-50's.
WW2 meant that many men returning home had their Flight Jacket, tanker jacket, Bomber Jacket, etc and they continued to wear it after the war, all of these jackets were brown.
The 50's saw black leather jackets become a rebel symbol. So you have this dichotomy between the Veterans/Gentlemen wearing their military jackets and the Kids wearing their rebel gear.

It's an animal skin friend, almost two decades old at that, the other guy posted some thin, black, waxy substance that would never be able to be a functional article of clothing for fear it would tear.
There's nothing trancendent about a black jacket that uses cheap materials and construction methods and then charges several thousand percent more than the labor and material price.

>>14296469
A leather jacket can fit like a t-shirt, but it depends on the actual skin and how it's constructed.

>>14297849
While I agree with you, white also looks fucking fantastic if it's high quality.

>>14297880
The finer the grain, the more expensive the leather in general. That's why lamb and baby lamb is so highly prized. The real cost comes from skins that have no flaws, and to get large panels that are flawless is difficult. Anon's pic is definitely lamb; you can see the grain just above the 'G', as well as in the white sections on the right side of the pic on the bag. The reason designer labels make leather in Pakistan is because their environmental laws are lax, so it's less costly to dye and tan the leather because they dump the used chems direct into their water sources instead of cleaning them up first. That has nothing to do with the actual quality of the skin; the two are separate issues that increase or decrease in quality depending on the source of the skin.

>>14297880
Love Buco; still thinking about getting one..

>>14298008
Correct, expensive doesn't equal quality. But leather that is smooth as latex is highly prized.

That's a tough one. I personally don't wear branding of any kind, so to me I'd never wear it. But that being said, if you can find a style or aesthetic that works with it (think baseball or 'fall classic' kind of styles) then it could work. It's in the same style as those college jackets, only this one has raglan sleeves and what look to be unzippable (and thus unadjustable) cuffs, so it's less of a riding jacket and more of a late 1980's comfort fit California style. If it's real, and you got it for 40 bucks, then you didn't fuck up...the leather alone would cost you 4-500$ before the pattern was cut and sewn.

Never left, but /fa/ has been dull lately and nothing to say and the usual questions being asked. Maybe we should think of compiling a 'read-first' leather guide to take care of the usual (any good jackets under 500$? Is all leather from Pakistan shit? What's the difference between Horse and Bison leather? plus trusted makers and who does custom, etc.). It would got a long way towards clearing things up.

Which company made yours? Pic requested. Are you happy with yours?

Regarding the daily wear, you have to consider the issue of what other people recognize and what they don't. I have an 'Indiana Jones' jacket, made by the original makers (Wested), but no one recognizes it at all as an Indy; you need the Fedora (which I don't have, nor plan to get), the whip, the tan trousers, etc. in order for people to recognize it. Granted, that style is a modified A2, so it flies under the radar and just looks like a normal brown leather jacket. But the point is that it's an iconic jacket to an entire generation of kids...and they don't recognize it without the rest of the costume.

With this jacket, I've found that NO one recognizes it at all. It gets the usual compliments and questions (i.e. where did you get it? How did you find one with a hood? It fits you well, etc.), but no one says, 'Hey, it's Donte'. That videogame seems to have fallen into the pits of obscurity; I don't know much about it, but the consensus online from what I've read is that the fans of DMC hated the redesign of the main character, and the gameplay, while okay, wasn't interesting or groundbreaking. So....the game has disappeared and no one cares.

My circle doesn't contain anyone who games seriously, including myself, so the reality for me is that it's a coat from a game that no one knows. People know it as MY coat, simply because it's unique and odd, but no one else wears it and it's 'mine'. Granted, it fits well, and I try to stay in shape (though I'm a little heavier in winter), so it looks like it's 'mine' and not something else.

There is something to be said for being online a little too much these days, perhaps for all of us. The reality that is a community online is completely different from people outside, for the most part, and just because people here recognize it for its origin shouldn't come as a surprise. But it's not indicative of what happens in real life.

If you have one that you like, and that fits you well, wear the hell out of it. Anyone over 35 isn't going to know what game it's from, and given the unpopularity of the game, unless you dress like Donte in full getup then at least 75-80% of the under-35s won't recognise it either.

The 'trick' is the same with any leather jacket; 1) make sure it fits, 2) wear it like it's normal and don't act strange about it, 3) profit?

>>14302817
Depends on your circle. The women I am around like men who look more formal than rugged, so lambskin and expensive leathers are what they like to feel. In other words, projecting wealth makes them wet. But a few years ago, it was the opposite...the more rugged and beat-up, the better. Why not focus on bettering yourself instead (increasing your status, your wealth, your power) and then letting the women come to you? That strategy has worked throughout history...and continues to work today...

Sorry, more thoughts about this.
>wish stuff like this was more acceptable...

It's acceptable if you make it so. Granted, it has to fit well, and you have to find stuff to pair it with, but ultimately the social power of wearing something strange comes from the wearer wearing it like it's normal. That throws the uncertainty back onto the person who is judging it to be odd or strange. In other words, it's easy for someone to point and laugh, but if the wearer is being serious and doesn't care, then the pointer starts to doubt if they're sane....lol That's pretty much how it works. You still have to plan it though (colours, shapes, etc.), but if the combo is good and appropriate to the climate/setting then that kind of fear of ridicule disappears pretty quickly when you notice that either no one cares what you're wearing or that anyone who does looks like a fool for pointing it out.

Lastly...life is too short to not wear what you want. I'm sorry, but I've gotten to the point where I don't give a damn. Sure, I am careful to have the combos I want and to think about it....but if a jacket or shoes or whatever make you happy, then why the fuck not? Consider that right now in Western society, people are 'celebrated' and encouraged to dress in ways that are unpredictable or challenge the conservative perception. It used to be a social minority thing (counterculture) but now it's become mainstream. Why can these people enjoy wearing strange outfits, and you can't enjoy wearing a coat? Seems odd to me, so I'd say if the jacket fits, wear the damn thing and enjoy it. That's all...

WW2 bomber jackets were made to have several layers worn underneath which makes them look ridiculously huge short of wearing an A2 jacket underneath, pictured here. Obviously the shearling jacket I'm wearing has some modern considerations like side entry pockets.

I almost bought a Stooges, but ended up hating the fit and returning it. So slim one can see the shape of your arms and ribcage, plus overly long arms.

No idea what kind of stature you need to look good in it. My skinny ass certainly didn’t.
