The 2220.80, the first-gen co-axial movement was the Omega 1120 with a co-axial escapement bolted on while running at 4Hz on a base movement not designed for a co-axial escapement (the ETA 2892-A2). Its terrible reliability is known in the watch world.

I can attest to this to some degree. I bought a 2220.80 last year second hand online from a physical store front that also sold online. It came to me already not working. The second hand would tick for a few seconds and stop, regardless of how much it was wound/worn. Took it back and had it serviced for free as part of the warranty and now it's been fine since, but I've heard similar stories about it failing often and I'll be damned if I have to shell out to have it serviced constantly.

The Yobokies shroud was a bit of a pain to fit correctly since it was designed for the slightly older JDM version of the solar tuna, and the screws strip absurdly easily, but it was worth it to get the added toughness and aesthetics of a steel shroud. I wasn't expecting to like the Isofrane style strap on it as much as I do, though. That was a pleasant surprise.

The IWC Big Pilot is the pretty obvious choice. The Bregeut Type XX Aeronavale is good if you want a chrono, but the Glashuette Original Senator Navigator is the true under-the-radar choice.

mines the quartz, while i usually prefer mechanical for casual wear i use this watch at work and i prefer the guarantee that it'll always be running
the height really isn't a issue, here's a side by side with a similarly sized vostok. the 36mm wears really comfortably and the height has never seemed excessive or gotten in the way
i've got a buddy who has one of the automatic JSARs and it's pretty nice, but way too big for me

Unfortunately for the price point of that there isn’t all that much similar, depending on what you’re willing to cut.

The Rotary GMT costs about the same but the dial is a bit different.

Timex also do another GMT, pic related which you could put on a NATO/ZULU but the bezel is a different color.

I wear a diver during the summer because I sweat like an animal. Being able to rinse the watch and strap under cold tap water and quickly putting it back on is nice. It's reassuring that to know that it can take that easily without putting the movement in danger.

That's quite precisely true. Cheap analogue quartz movements actually tend not to be that tough against hard shocks due to being built extremely cheaply, with very loose tolerances, out of cheap materials.

An analogue quartz movement is certainly capable of much better shock resistance than any mechanical movement, but it has to be designed and built to actually be highly robust against shocks. Not that many quartz divers actually have such movements.

The accuracy advantage of quartz over mechanical isn't really relevant for dive watch functionality because the time-scales on which dives occur mean that the accuracy gap isn't relevant.

Well we're talking about free sprung balances, silicon hairsprings, full balance bridges, chronometer certifications, ...
These are features associated with relatively expensive mechanicals, so it's fair to compare to non-cheap analog quartzes.

Digital quartzes can be dirt cheap AND extremely robust, like the G-shocks.
But then digital watches are not as well-suited for diving as lumed analog watches.

Bought an Omega seamaster 30 from 1962 for US$420. It's in need of a service as the mainspring only holds power for about 6 hours. I went to a local service shop today and they told me it would cost approx US$340 to get it serviced and replace the mainspring and probably something else. Am I paying too much for this watch now? In other words, should I return the watch?

I literally went online thinking I'd get something cheap and then after looking around a bit I decided on a "real" watch and now I'm almost $760 deep into an impulse purchase. I just want to know I'd get my money back if I decide to sell this watch in 5 years

Although it is in very good physical condition. From a cursory look into it, the price you paid for the watch seems to be consistent with the going market rate for that model in that condition. It's just luck of the draw that you need to replace the mainspring in addition to needing a regular service.

In the future you should always assume any vintage watch you buy will need to be serviced immediately after purchase, because that usually ends up being the case.

Yes well Seiko received the letter that prompted the development of the tuna line in 1968 and released the first model in 1975, so they'd been making them for a long time before dive computers supplanted dive watches.

Plus, there's still a use case for extremely tough analogue watches, and the Seiko tuna line are probably the toughest analogue watches on the market.
