I think he's right to maybe some degree that "slim fit" in suiting is a response to lower demand and an attempt to lower manufacturing costs. But you're seeing "slim fit" across the board in menswear, and you have for a decade plus, even in areas that haven't seen such a marked decline in consumption. Additionally, material costs are only one of the inputs suit manufacture, and probably less significant compared to labor and production costs (though I suppose "smaller" suits probably require less man-hours)

>> No.14189117

I don't think the fabric costs are very substantial at all.
I'd see the reason in the fact you need to buy a new suit if you gain or lose a bit of weight whereas older styles used to be more forgiving.

I would argue that the evolution towards slim fit has all to do with culture and is not influenced by business practices. The general population, more now than ever, cares about health, fitness and looking good. Form fitting clothing is the best way to show off what you got. Business suits have gone from trying to look very patrician and important to wanting to look good sexually and advertise yourself. If you want to compete in a more and more social media frenzied world you're going to wear more sportswear (ex. yoga pants on girls, tight pants on guys) to garner the most attention.

there's also the theory that slim fit emerged as a reaction to the baggy fits that came before

I would like to wear suits everytime I'm out, but I'm a poorfag and people would think I'm an autist. :(

does it matter what people think?
Most of us are really busy to care about you, just wear what you like, but wear it with confidence.

I mean even without having a decline in consumption in the first place, there's literally zero downside for a company to making clothes will less fabric that they can sell the same price

Not to mention, it means that teenagers and young adults cannot keep wearing their clothes as they grow taller or fatter with age. I can still wear a lot of clothes from highschool because early 2000's fashion was for everything to be baggy as fuck, so now it's just become a normal fit. But it won't be possible for teenagers nowadays, as soon as they gain even a tiny bit of weight, time to throw away everything and buy new clothes.

Companies have clearly been marketing *hard* towards keeping everything skinny and not letting fashion naturally fall back to baggier clothes because they absolutely don't want to lose that.

dude I live in an asian tropical country (philippines tbe) where everyone prefers to wear tshirt and shorts.

But I chose to wear Pure linen suit everyday, with henley shirt/cotton dress shirt just because I like wearing it.

People started to actually treat me better, in store, restaurant, public places, etc. than wearing the norms.

Just wear what you want, just be sure it fits right, not too slim, not to baggy, matching shoes too.

In a video from over a year ago, I think, one of his inspirations for switching to more formality in his regular clothing was from watching classic movies from the 1920s-1950s eras.
