I think that's why - it's the future of the 80's, not the real future and so it's obviously "outdated" in the sense that it's not a great prediction of what actually will happen in the future. Can't speak too much for boring, but cyberpunk is often enough about corporate dominance and life as a wageslave that I could see calling that boring. At the very least, black athletic wear isn't exactly an exciting view of the fashion of the future. That's why cyberpunk threads on /fa/ need to capture the punk element of cyberpunk. You can't be boring if you've got a mohawk.

Imo techwear really just looks like a polished sci-fi uniform or futuristic secret agent outfits. Cyberpunk (inspired) fashion – at least to me –should be a lot grittier and dirtier and/or have a sense of repurpose to fit the whole -punk part of cyberpunk. Not so much black, not so many neon colored accents (like whatever color Errolson decides the next Prestos should have), a bit more de-saturated and a little more brown.

>>14190291
Thank you. I'm tired of this flavor of the year EDM music being associated with cyberpunk. It's so superficially futuristic and entirly relying on a faux nostalgia for the 80s that 99% of its listeners never even experienced in the first place. It's as much cyberpunk as heavily edited pink and cyan photographs of glowing kanji neon signs that you saw that one time in Toronto. It's the fast food of electronic music. It's for people who saw Drive and loved it because of the a e s t h e t i c s but were completely dumbfounded when they saw Nicolas Winding Refn's other movies. It's for people who never read a book by William Gibson or Philip K. Dick but read every single page on the Hotline Miami wiki. For people who looooveeed Blade Runner 2049 but thought the original was too boring. There's nothing -punk about Synthwave.

Wouldn't it be using, repurposing and making it your own fit the concept even more? When I think of cyberpunk settings I think of a huge class divide where the underpriviledged take whatever gets thrown away, regardless of whether it used to be "corporate bullshit" or not, and make it their own. That's why I think some of the distressed futuristic shit that's been trendy for a few years now works well. Both Gibson's Sprawl trilogy as well as the (underrated) Bridge trilogy often mention lowlifes making use of pre-owned passed along shit that used to be fancy.

I'm not making fun of you or your outfit, it just doesn't have anything "cyber" or "punk" about it.
I get the argument that we are living in the cyberpunk world already so any contemporary outfit is cyberpunk, but I disagree. Just because a story is "cyberpunk" don't mean that all the characters are "cyberpunks". The term is reserved for the high-tech lowlife rebels.
You just look like another poor person in joggers and a windbreaker.

I see this criticism all the time in just about every type of thread like this

To me it feels like there's a very fine middle ground that you have to run being able to justify your pieces without going overboard into full on larp territory but also that if you don't put enough thought/work into it its not ever enough. This generally makes it so that nobody ever actually posts fits or when they do its never 'cyber or punk' enough or its just too far over into being way too larpy

My question is does anyone have examples of actual fits people have made for a thread like this?

Even if they dont live up to the idealized inspo images it seems to me that if you're trying to put together a fit to post in a thread like this that hasn't been created organically that it comes off as disingenuous

A bit I forgot

Since a lot of people claim that we already do live in a dystopian society is it also mostly that very little of the content you see actually has any aspects related to that like clothing/accessories that helps subvert surveillance in a subtle way or has technical properties specifically tailored towards utility in urban environments

I think there's an intersection of dwc/techwear/cyberpunk stuff thats very relevant to the world we live in right now so I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on this

This one might be my favorite example of a great cyberpunk fit. It doesn't look larpy (atleast to me; no useless straps and tenhousand unused cargo pockets, no all-black, no balaclava/facemask), wouldn't stick out in a crowd in a larger city but also looks "punk" enough with the de-saturated colors and distressing; futuristic enough in functionality and silhouette.

Cyberpunk is probably too much larp to pull off in every day life, but you can certainly draw inspo. Like you say in your next comment, dwc/techwear definitely intersect cyberpunk, and in a lot of ways they are more palatable to wear in every day life, even if they share cyberpunk styling.

There is a huge difference between a 'cyberpunk outfit' and a 'cyberpunk inspired' or 'cyberpunk reminiscent' outfit.

>>14198606
Aesthetic is completely divorced from context. Imagine being a farmer wearing full Yohji and claiming that makes Yohji "farmwear" since you are a farmer and you are wearing Yohji. Living in a cyberpunk society doesn't automatically make any outfit cyberpunk.

Give it ten years. My local grocery store workers went on strike and there are robots in there now scanning things and flagging cleanups, while the front is all self checkout.

Retail clerk and truck driver are the comst common jobs in 31 states and they're all going to be gone in 10-15 years.

Between robots, the first gene edited babies (super rich thus making themselves God's), and AI making fewer professionals needed, we're going to be a dystopian society soon.

Plus climate change will drive more mass migration, which will swell the underclass. You'll probably have tent cities in every major city due to unemployment and the African population boom.

I wouldn't consider Case a classic rebel, Deckart's (at least in the novel) whole motivation is conformity and fitting in (one of his biggest fears is that his neighbour will discover that the black-faced sheep he owns isn't real), Hiro Protagonist, while rebellious in his spirit isn't rebelling against any sort of authority.

this is the difference between cyberpunk and cosplay

if they want to look cyberpunk fine, but if they dont get the ethos behind it, it's just cosplay for the gram

especially considering the prices that acronym is going for nowadays, it's decidedly antithetical to cyberpunk (not that acronym explicitly said they are trying to be authentic cyberpunk). if there were no alternative to acronym i might get resignedly spending that much on it but there's plenty of utilitarian milsurp stuff that's more true to the proletarian cyberpunk spirit. acronym is the playground of the elite. really cool stuff to look at and appreciate the design, but it's glossy where cyberpunk should be gritty.

But not cyberpunk. I think it's hard to define what is though. If you think "high tech, low life", than a simple iPhone can by cyberpunk; every "low life" that I know carries one. If you think wearable tech, the price point will make it "not -punk", same for stuff that's meant to disrupt facial recognition surveillance cameras. In a sense, counterfeit Acronym is more cyberpunk than Acronym since it delivers the same promises while being more available for the lower-class masses.
