Movement shot. It's made out of 18k gold and esquisitely finished as all of Journe's pieces.

“In a watch, never mind which, there is energy which dissipates. When you listen to a watch, the tic-tac of the balance is dissipating energy. In a resonance chronometer, there are two balance wheels which are placed sufficiently close to one another, and the dissipated energy of each is caught by the other, leading to a unique type of frequency regulation.”

Here's a more subdued version of the Résonance. The power reserve indicator is reversed from the norm, beginning at 40 and progressing to 0. The reasoning behind this lies in the idea that the power reserve indicator is not meant to display how many hours are left, but instead how many hours have passed since the watch was wound.

Reposting some of my google finds.

Did some more research into Glashütte watch companies and damn, the employee reviews are scathing and it's not just in Glashütte, it's the entire German watch industry. Plenty of complaints about salary, management issues, high turnovers, and geographic location. Only praises are about the nice work environment.

Watchmakers earn 1800€ gross and that's AFTER several years and salary increases, it's not the starting pay. From A. Lange & Söhne to Glashütte Original, to Nomos to Junghans to Sinn. All have plenty of complaints about management and very low wages. A sad, sad state.

>> No.14177870

>>14177868
Imagine earning 21k gross a year as a watchmaker for a top Glashütte brand... Watchmakers are made to be the superstars of marketing campaigns and they're not even compensated enough.

Put yourself in a watchmaker's shoes. You're hyped up in these savoir-faire videos and yet you earn 1800€ gross a month. Assuming you're working a 40-hour work week, you're making 11,25€ per hour. 11,25€! All that precision work and top finishing and you're paid 11,25€. What the fuck. I can see why complaints are so high about Glashütte brands.

From a 1,61 employee review of Lange:
I do not think it's a good thing that the famous name of the brand is unfortunately not reflected in how it deals with employees.

From a 2,26 review:
Lange Uhren has nothing in common with a family business anymore. The climate is hardly pleasant, especially in non-producing areas.

Here's from an excerpt of review from a Glashütte Original watchmaker:

World-famous actors, prominent figures and sheiks come regularly to visit to see the handcraftmanship. They buy their watches in the 6-digit range and I have to buy my clothes at Kick / NKD.

Pro: Once in the summer at 40C, the ice cream man actually cames by and there is anyone who would have thought it would be a free small soft ice cream. Top!

Cons: The simple production worker is worthless there. Employees who work in the office or who are in charge of marketing pull a kilometer long perfume track behind them and do not even get a "hello, or good day" . These people are just something better, but of course they are for the " Image "in charge. It really is a disaster how degrading it is. Of course, every office employee has a company car.

The pro seems sarcastic to me.

These are nice and all (although I hate miniature main dials), but I wish Journe would stop sucking the Swiss cock so much.
Not only did he base his shop in Geneva even though he's from Paris, he even abandoned the French style of movement finishing in favor of Swiss finishing (côtes de Genève etc.).

Pic related is what more of his watches should look like.

It's how the French and English used to finish their movements, and they were the big daddies in watchmaking before they started outsourcing to the Swiss for their cheap labor.

It's called frosting and I think you get it by pouring an abrasive medium onto the piece from the height of an upwardly stretched arm.

>...they can only be serviced by Omega
Just be aware that this is PRECISELY the point. The incentive here by companies is that you keep on buying new watches, not have older ones that you service forever. My watchman, like many independents, cannot get the parts from Omega any longer, as they've officially cut off independents. This means any new Omega you buy will likely have to be serviced by Omega anyway, and if there is a need to replace any parts, you'll have to go to Omega for it.

But it's the only way they can continue the revenue stream because millenials either don't wear watches or have the disposable income to buy them in the numbers we used to see a decade ago with the last remnants of the older generations. A damn shame, but that's the way of the world.

>>14179803
I honestly don't know what the legal issues are regarding the rights to the movement. You'll notice that in every article about the new 321, they state that it was re-engineered from an older 321. Now, they could go to Lemania and just get the original made, I presume...but since they're not, then obviously this is a case of changing the 321 enough that they don't have to pay rights to Lemania. It's just a guess, but it makes sense given what is happening.

>>14179804
Understood; steel moonwatch in my view is unlikely. But it's possible given that they are using it as a cash cow. What should they do if given the choice? Either put it into Platinum and Gold versions that no fan of the Moonwatch would ever have the funds to buy, or put it into a 'limited' edition in steel for, say 8,000$ (so, more than a normal Moonwatch, but less than the starting price of an original cal. 321 in decent condition). That's what I think they'll do, incidentally.

Well, here's the problem, and it's a universal thing that every watchmaker faces today:

1) Watches are not necessary. Phones do the job.
2) Mechanical watches are inferior to quartz in telling time. Also, they're far more expensive.
3) We're now 2 generations removed from people who depended upon fine watches, for normal daily use as well as precision use in a job.
4) The prestige of a fine watch has no social collateral in the modern world (i.e. 25-45, working in normal economic conditions). Excessive obvious wealth is now disappearing in the West, and only the Chinese and the Arabs (with a few Russians scattered amongst them) practice this.
5) The economic conditions for the typical working person are NOT favorable to buying watches. The reliable jobs aren't there, and with a gigging economy, you can't guarantee that you have the funds to sustain you in 2 years from now. Combine this with the fact that Mechanical watches are too expensive to buy solely for style or accessorizing (which is what cheap Fossil watches are for), they're very expensive to service, and they only do one thing. cont.

You have to put yourself in the shoes of a perspective buyer.

1) Can't afford housing, because it's too expensive. Job may crap out, so possibly save like a demon if possible. 3000$ Watch is out of the question, with servicing of 250$ every 5 years or so. Furthermore, student loans.

2) If making good money, then why blow that money on a watch and not technology (new computer, new phone, better car, better housing, etc.). And since men are the primary buyers anyway, we have to ask: does an expensive watch attract women? Today, not as much as in the 80's.

I think the watch companies could survive if they did a social advertising campaign a la DeBeers. Make it something that is socially a requirement, tied in with sex. Like, an advertising campaign that says that women only notice men with Rolexes. Or men judge other men by the quality of Omega on their wrist. Something like this.

That's the only way they'll sell.

1) Thoughts on brands like DW and MVMT. I don't care for them. They don't interest me aesthetically or mechanically. Younger people may like them though, and if so, that's cool.

2) Positive impact on the industry. Well, the industry already has markets (China, Japan, The Middle East, Russia). In my view, out of 10 teenagers who buy a 'cool' MVMT watch, 2 or 3 of them will earn enough in their job to afford something in the 7-10K price range. So...I don't know if it'll have an impact or not (I'd guess 'no').

3) Customers 'graduating' into finer watches. The problem is the price and the resale value. We need other expenses first (house/apartment, car, and living). Then comes technology (computer, phone); these are essentials that cost a lot. In the 80's, a watch was still an essential, so it made sense: you get your first watch (quartz shitter) as a kid, you get something a little better as a teen, and then when you get your first job, you save up for your first 'real' watch. But today watches are unnecessary, so they are now ONLY jewellery.

There is of course a subset of the society who revel in these mechanical wonders, that will always exist. But now that there is no need for every person on the planet to have a watch...well, you've lost a huge reason to buy one.

To be fair though, mechanical watches in the 50's were far more affordable (with adjusted dollars to weekly income) than today, because after the quartz revolution the industry had to survive by selling watches based on 'heritage', 'craftsmanship', etc. rather than performance.

In the 1950's, there would be a reason to buy a watch that you'd only have to set once a month. The increase in cost would be a worthwhile price to pay. But not today.

I could go on and on, and I just might considering how quiet the board is.

Consider this. Without the need for a watch to succeed in daily life, what is the point in a watch being accurate over the hours? I mean, really...what is the point? Well, the point is the hobby: the celebration of human ingenuity, mechanical precision, and of course the aesthetic component that goes with it (design, craftsmanship, finishing, etc.). This is the achilles heel of the watch industry as we know it.

1) Any mechanical watch company that tries to sell a watch based on its performance will be shut down with a simple word: quartz. So, that argument is out. They have to do something else.

2) If you've ever talked to people who work in the boutiques, you'll notice that they NEVER want to bring up the subject of servicing and how much it costs. The reasoning is simple: why would anyone want to spend this kind of money on something that can stop working? Furthermore, if you have to send the watch to the company, you're looking at 800$+ for a servicing of a normal, 3 hand date movement. Once you get into chronograph territory, it increases, and then for vintage even more. So, once again, there's another downside.

3) Real-world performance is another key factor. You wouldn't believe the number of people I've talked to who told me that they hated owning a Rolex, for the sole reason that it didn't live up to the reputation. They expected it to perform within normal quartz specs. As buyers, they had no idea about positioning, temperature differences, winding differences, etc...they thought, 'it's an expensive watch, so it should tell the time', and they were shocked that they had to reset it more than once a week.

We live in an age now where society is trained to expect things instantaneously, and to have quartz accuracy (or satellite) from every device we use. Wearing an expensive piece of jewellery that never gets the time right is contrary to this.

I personally love watches, for the aesthetics as well as mechanical ingenuity. I still find it to be something of a miracle that on my wrist is the culmination of 700 or so years of human intellect, with the goal of quantifying and measuring something that is by nature in flux and constant. I wear one, not out of need, but out of fun. It's a hobby, and it brings me pleasure.

Hobbies in our world make a lot of money. Entertainment (sports, movies, videogames, gambling) are obvious. Other hobbies that make a lot of money are tied directly to sex: fashion being the most important. But then there are other hobbies that have connections but not too secure: clocks/watches, carpentry, self-sufficiency in extreme environments, parasailing, etc. At that point, it becomes something of a niche, and must rely on aggressive advertising in order to sustain itself.

Diamonds only survived because of the connection with the engagement ring. Is there something watches could be tied to that is socially locked in place? I don't think so because now people aren't buying diamonds anymore either. Yes, marriage rates are going down, but society itself has moved in a direction that encourages and supports extreme flexibility and nothing long-term. Everything is for the moment.

How in the world can you sell a product that is meant for the long term in a world where long term has no practical manifestation anymore? That's what watch companies are facing. So, perhaps that's the answer to your question. Another question, which I absolutely don't have the answer to, because I honestly don't think there is one. Rolex I think will always survive. Watchmakers like Journe and Dufour will survive. But Oris? Fortis? even Tag Heuer...I'm not so sure about. Okay, blog over.

What do you guys think?

>> No.14180059

I'm pretty sure the whole mechanical watch thing is either for feeling like you belong to an exclusive club of distinguished people, gearheads, or people who want to stand out.

But people do this shit with everything, buying things and worrying about attributes they'll never use. Performance cars not going on the track, trucks that will never tow more than a couch, knives that were bought at stupid prices and never used, guns that are rarely fired and are more accurate than the user, lightweight bicycles on heavy people, etc.

So what's the best mass produced movement? I think those chinks might get the edge one day, leaving only vostok and orient.

The best mass produced movement? Probably one of the ETAs (2824-2 likely), or the Valjoux 7750. That being said, the Chinese produce more movements than anyone else, so likely one of the Seagull movements would be a numerical winner.

I agree about the potential motivations for why people have this horological hobby. The problem that I see is that I just don't think that the motivations that do exist are not enough to keep the whole industry afloat, which is the primary problem and core of what >>14178414

My wrists are AIDS patient tier. Look at my laptop’s trackpad as a reference. I’m to used to wearing 34-38 mm vintage watches and this is the first time I spend so much on a watch, since I’ve always gone vintage and below 350€. Another reason I’ve always gone vintage is because current manufacturers have always offered monstruosities since the start of the century until now, apparently, which is amazing news.

I paid 1402€, the jeweler in northern Spain I’m getting it from us ordering it for me from the factory, I asked him for a discount and he offered me that price which I found impressive considering it’s retails for like 1860€ on the website.
It makes me think how much of a scam Swiss watch pricing is, since the dealer has to get a decent margin for it, let alone the Swatch group.

I told some silly cunt that everything they needed to find the model of their watch was on the dial. Then some flid gave me a pathetic attempt at a telling off, so I called them a retard.

Does he disclose that? That’s illegal as far as I know if he doesn’t.

>> No.14185494

no, he's a very dishonest person

he recently got banned from youtube for copyright strikes after repeatedly using people's photos in his videos and slapping his watermark on them without credit. they reached out to him about it and he basically told them to fuck off. he then tried to spin the ban as him being too busy "caring for a loved one" despite being on instagram the entire time.

another example is where he also once tried to say a house his mum owned was his. when people pointed that out, he literally pretended she was dead and left it to him.

Where can I read more on that? Recently discovered him on my suggestions he sounds scummy
