Yes. It's a term used to describe a very incohesive movement, so it was never codified, commercialized, and exploited like the movements before it (or even others it spawned).

It's not about genre, it's about sound design. There's endless genres of fashion, endless genres of music- it's about finesse.
Btw if it wasn't obvious, you need to spend at least ~$300 (poorfag levels) on gear and use a quality source (paid, not Youtube, not free Spotify) to even hear finesse.

Well, actually sound design is only a part of it.
Sound design is more the creativity with which the artist made the sounds present in the music- for example using a bass kick from a sound kit is doing no sound design work yourself (but of course the kick can still have good sound design if the original creator of the sound did a good job).
What I should have said was sound design AND mastering. Mastering refers to a few different things, the notable aspect here being the objective quality of the sound. The best example is acoustic instruments- a cello in front of you sounds incredible, but a cello recorded with a bad mic and played back through Beats headphones sounds like absolute trash. The other aspect of mastering is sort of a mix of the two above- how the artist balanced all the sounds in the track (ensuring vocals come through clear and instruments don't drown each other out, etc.).
All of the above is what makes effay music [if I have to be a twat and use that phrase]- and quality equipment is absolutely necessary for being able to hear it.

I agree with what you're saying, amazing production is usually the thread between all of my favorite albums (I don't want to say favorite "music", because that implies individual songs, and I prefer to look at music as a chronological progression through sound. I.e. New Order's sound on "Movement" makes it a favorite album, but I couldn't say whether they were a favorite band)

I can recognize similarities between those 4 bands. Were you really into the sound of melodic clean guitars for a while?

>> No.14163012

I'm usually into instrumental music; I really enjoy mathrock/post-rock. Melodic but not necessarily clean.
I guess I was jonesing for some discordant and sometimes harsher music that still holds complexity and novelty.
