How can I dress in a folky style without seeming like an autist?

Don't limit yourself to only getting folk inspo from WW1 and WW2 uniforms, you can get way better European-folk inspo by looking at how regular people dressed in the 19th century and the 20th century before the start of WW1. You'd give of less of an impression you're simply larping as a soldier.

But it seems like people just wore suits back then.

Well yeah, the modern suit evolved from the clothing that upper class people wore, which was in turn created as a more refined version from the clothes that peasants wore. So a lot of peasant clothes from that time resemble suits in some way, but are so different to todays standards they wouldn't really look that much like suits if you wore them in the present day.
If I were experienced in sewing I would make my own clothes and exclusively dress in either 19th century peasant clothes or 19th century upper class casual wear like pic related.

thank you anon, I'd also rather keep the distinction there so people know they're talking about different things when discussing folk fashion vs neofolk fashion.

I'm sorry, but actual people in early 20th century Europe actually wore these "suits" on a daily basis. Usually if you were a person living in that era you would own one or perhaps two suits that you would wear only on special occasions or trips to the city. Usually people just wore the same dirty clothes everyday. I could link some old Yugoslav films adapting 19th century early 20th century Croatian novels that took place in rural areas at that time period, which accurately portrays what people wore back then.

focus on dressing simply in natural fibres and perhaps even try to make your own things

Absolute low IQ post, suits are in a sense derivative of military garments and served in the 19th to 20th century to give the white collar working class an uniform appearance.

A lot of this sort of thing still looks timeless, without being either trendy or autistic:
peacoat
tweed jacket
grey flannel trousers
Irish woollen sweater
leather brogues
flat cap (ok, a bit much, but with some balls and flair, you ought to be able to pull it off)

OP you’re already insisting on dressing up like a person from the 30’s in the year 2019; you will look autistic and pretentious to everyone. Don’t be a pussy and embrace the look you want if you love it. Trying to fit in with something that sticks out like a sore thumb sounds like a dumb tactic.

where does one go to buy clothes that fit this aesthetic? I see Universal Works mentioned a lot but their prices are quite high ($195 for a pair of pleated pants, $250 for a baket's jacket etc.) Thrifting isn't an option for me
