Why would anybody spend thousands of dollars on a watch? It's a watch. It has one purpose: to keep time. I don't think you should buy the cheapest Timex or Casio you can find, but a Tissot or Frederique Constant will keep time just as well as an A. Lange und Sohne or Rolex at a tenth or twentieth of the cost.

>> No.14105028

Money and a feeling of 'ive made it' are common reasons. I dont think its work it to spend that much, but like a few hunder is alright. Just remember a dollar to an average wage person is like $25000 to a person with 1 billion. To bezos its $3000000

Are you really asking why people spend thousands of dollars on status signaling products in this day and age?

Why would anybody spend thousands of dollars on clothes? It's clothes. It has one purpose: to keep you covered. I don't think you should buy the cheapest Wal-Mart or Kohl's shit you can find, but items from Target or Old Navy will keep you covered just as well as Gucci or Tom Ford at a tenth or twentieth of the cost.

This is a fashion board and you're essentially saying the only purpose of clothes is to keep you covered. Why are you even here?

Yep it's a scam and the greatest delight of a marketing exec. They managed to trick people that paying for more for dated technology and worse timekeeping is somehow luxurious.

I just bought a Chinese knockoff instead, it cost a fraction of the price and the only way you could tell the difference would be to have it examined by a jeweler.
Unless several thousand dollars is totally irrelevant to you, i.e. you're a millionaire, anyone who pays Rolex money for a watch is an idiot.

What I find wrong and toxic about wristwatches it this tendency to bring normal people to what is essentially a luxury market, with all the antics and the nonsense attached.
It's like telling an average Joe to buy a Rolls Royce or a Ferrari because the cheaper cars "aren't worth it".

The beauty of manual labour, the intrinsic value of said manual labour and precious materials, the cultural aspect of mechanical engineering upon other things are to be considered. Imagine all people would put as much work and attention to detail in everything they do - we'd live in a perfect world. So a precious, meticulously engineered analogue watch is a small glimpse of paradise and perfection accessible to everyone here and now.
