Hey /wt/

I was looking for opinions and critiques of IWC. Seems like they are well made watches, and have a long history. I don't know how highly regarded they are now. I was looking at the pilot's watches and the portofino series. They look elegant but for the amount of money they are asking, you can start looking at many other brands that are high quality.

Why do people keep justifying mechanic watches by making analogies to luxury goods that actually have good reasons for being more expensive in objective terms when watches don't have that?

A fitted suit fits better. A Porsche is faster. A mechanical watch only has the advantage of gawking at the caseback, since you can get quartz with a sweeping hand. You should be talking about the artistic value instead, because it's jewelry.

The arguments won't ever stop because both extreme sides have valid arguments but cannot accept that their own view isn't the one and only.

Mechanicals cannot counterargue that they value form over function. Higher priced cars do have better function (using the Mercedes/Kia example), while the same can't be said of watches.

Quartz for some reasons cannot accept that some people have the means to afford mechanicals.

But I guess it's better this than the threadsplitting days.

Comfort is a function, anon. The Mercedes would not only performed better, but also more comfortably.

Put it this way, if both a mechanical and a quartz had the same level of hand-stitched quality leather and fine finishing, the only difference being the movements, which would you choose?

That's the point, rich people spend money on whatever they want, and some of them chose to wear cheap stuff. They can clearly afford it, but choose not to because their quartz was good enough for them. The original poster made it sound like the only reason to get a quartz was because you were poor.

The only consistent hallmark of the rich is that they don't spend all of their money all the time, otherwise they'd stop being rich quickly.

Didn't really think much about it and never bothered to figure out why or read a manual. Now I was experimenting and it seems to me if the seconds are between 0 and 30 the minutes will stay the same when pressing the button, and if the seconds are between 30 and 0 the minutes will skip ahead one minute. Is this the case or is it something else? And what's the purpose? Don't know the exact cutoff line, if it's 1-30 and 31-0 or what. >The case [of the GS] however is artisanal and by that I mean it's hand finished.
>You've heard me talk of the Zaratsu tin plate polishing and you're probably sick of it in these comparisons, but the drama it creates is tangible and needs no verbiage or explanation.
>If you were to glimpse this black polished mirror shine, optically smooth and distortion-free, you would realize there's something going on here that is absolutely vacant in the machine-polished flanks of the Tudor.
>Even with the simulated bevels along the case line designed to evoke vintage timepieces it doesn't have the character or charisma to say nothing of the artisanal virtuosity of the Grand Seiko case.

>[The GS dial] has a depth and a luster that makes the matte finish of the Tudor look absolutely insipid.
>The dial furniture [on the GS] is superb.
>Though you have applied indices on the Tudor you don't get these black polished hands with mirrored knife-like facets nor do you get the quality of the indices that you find on the grand Seiko.
>The grand Seiko simply takes the Tudor to the cleaners on the dial side.

Ouch!

I think for the Tudor/Rolex pricepoint that they should all be done by hand.

Lateral clutches can run continuously, but they wear precipitously if you do so. Unlike vertical clutches.

Like you said, high-end makes use lateral clutches because it looks a lot nicer. And "looking nice" is the main selling point for Langes because of the movement finishing.
