It looks to be more of a Spanish bolero hat, El Zorro's hat style of choice, and it bears similarities with some Amish hats, as well. Most Jewish hats are not exactly like that one, which is a little too wide-brimmed and too flat-brimmed to be a typical Hasidic hat. It looks similar to some Satmar Hasidic hats, but that's about it, and those are also a little different from the picture. Pic-related is something a lot of Satmar denomination Hasidic Jews seem to wear, it is a bit different.

I've wanted to wear hats like this for a long time but feel like I'd be overdressed in most situations. I grew up semi rural and my father was a farmer so I did actually used to wear akubras as a kid. But now where I've never seen anyone under 60 wearing a hat that wasn't a baseball cap, not that there's anything wrong with those. What sort of clothes do you pair yours with?

Sure! That Akubra hat is a style called the Bushman. It starts open crown (round on top), and I styled mine like that picture above, although the one in this post shows the open shape. With such a shape as the one I go for (and open crown), it has a 19th century old west impression that I like about it, compared to most 20th and 21st century cowboy hats that have very curled sides on their brims, with a cattleman’s crease. I typically just wear it with normal clothes by my standards; jeans or chinos, dress shirts or workwear/westernwear shirts, casual jackets or a sports jacket, and sometimes even dressed up with a tie. It seems to go well with most things I have, although not really grey and black trousers and shirts, as much. I am 30, to give you a perspective of age, and I have been wearing it on and off since around 25. If people have said anything about it over the years, they have liked it. I plan to get a similar black hat, next. That should have my grey and black clothes covered, and it could go with most of my other tones, as well. One more thing to add is that Akubra hats are very reliable in the rain and snow, and don’t look worse for it, in my experience.

This is the one I wore as a kid. A Jacaru, not Akubra, now that I look. I think the age thing might be a big part of being able to pull it off, I'm only 20 and most people my age, where I live (semi-rural/suburban Sydney, Australia), dress EXTREMELY casually 90% of the time. Shorts, tshirts, singlets, tracksuits etc. I'm often told I'm overdressed when I wear jeans and boots to parties.Only time its 'normal' to dress up is if we go into the city, those nights I usually go for a sleazecore/western hybrid. Think John Travolta with the bolo tie in pulp fiction. A hat won't do me much good at night time in a bar though, so I guess I may just have to wait until I'm a little older, or move somewhere less casual haha.

Genuine fedoras are fine, I have a fairly floppy crushable Akubra that's essentially a fedora, it's a little bit town, not genuinely country, but it wouldn't look out of place at the races. An Akubra rep thought it suited me enough to take my photo when he came through work.

Trilbies though, they've had it from both autists and, I don't know a succinct way to describe the demographic, but surfing singer-songwriter festivalgoers. They will be played out for ever.
