Not really, men who wear flat caps are usually massive bell-ends but not in the same way as the fedora meme.

For all intents and purposes, any hat that's not a ball cap or watch cap is a fedora. A waxed mustache is also a fedora.

I like the hats, and I wear one sometimes. But nowadays they are pretty much associated with obnoxious hipsters.

What would be a good alternative?

There is no problem with them. The current popular culture is more likely to make fun of fedoras, particularly trilby narrow brimmed hats. Flat caps are also fine. If you like wearing hats and caps, wear them without catering to others.

I think the hipster association with these is nearly done, if not already so for many people. They are seen often enough times in the cities, and at least in Britain and Ireland, the countryside, that they are justifiably modern enough, with some old fashioned charm. As for alternatives, the newsboy caps are eight paneled, instead of one piece like the flat caps are, and very similar in style. Greek fishermen's and fiddler's caps are similar, but do not snap forward like the previously mentioned styles do. Peaked caps are mostly associated with military personnel, and postmen, as well as chauffeurs and a few other jobs, so they may be more difficult for regular civilians to wear without specifically occupational associations.
