I'm 5'7, 5'8 on a good day.

When I try on overcoats they DWARF me.

Should I just stay away from them? Or is it possible to make it work?

I like the slightly oversized dropped shoulder ones - but i think those wont work on someone short like me.

Any tips?

Like the one in the middle, it's more relaxed. Not a fan of the super slim structured ones.

I think you should wear what you want to wear

I'd like the one on the right if it was in black.

lmao, full length ones only look good on 6'5+ people like on Tom Brady.

I'll never even attempt those

You can wear them lmao, one century ago, most men were manlets and still wore them, just make sure they dont go past the knee.
You can also go for same trouser/overcoat/shoe color, it will make you seem not as short, all black is the easiest to pull this off

I have a thrifted wool mac that stops below the knee but not as low as the pic here >>14034172. Fit's well enough and I make it work despite being 6'1.

Make sure they fit right on your shoulders and then take it to a tailor to trim its length. For manlets they should fit way above the knee, without going full SEXcore.

So drop shoulder coats are a no no?

deconstructed / oversized coats are the best. Depends what you're looking for but at least in my opinion if you're a guy in your early twenties (which you most likely are) you want to it look as casual as possible.

that means: pockets at the side preferably at side seam, small lapels, no chest pocket, no buttons at sleeves.

I got pic related (acne studios chad) in black and fits all that criteria.

This is why i like the dropped shoulders/oversized ones. the normal overcoats are a bit too formal looking on a early 20s manlet with a baby face (itll look like im wearing my dad's business jacket)

When i take it to the tailors, should i have the coat taken in a bit? i think if the coat flares out at the buttom itll look like it's dwarfing me etc

I'm about your size, and I don't think it's a matter of height as much as proportions. Overcoats will shorten your legs and lenghten your torso, so you must figure if that works for you (i.e: you have longer legs than torso). If you have the opposite problem (shorter legs than torso) you are probably much better off wearing a jacket that ends at your waist and pants with a higher rise.

If you go for it, and as other anons mentioned, the overcoat should not go past the knee, and ideally end around mid-thigh (IMO) if you're on the shorter end. If you can't find one or it doesn't really work with your body, you shouldn't despair because there's plenty of outerwear that works better for shorter men. Think about harringtons, bombers, racers, varsity, fleeces, denim... instead of longer or draping outerwear like trench coats, overcoats and military style parkas which are more suited to taller men.

If you're skinny and they have a nice modern silhouette you can pull of any lenght of a coat.
Nice bony shoulders and toothpick calves are required
