I understand that raw denim is basically meant to fade and whatnot according to your body and usage. However, people who are into this claim that washing them in a washer will ruin these fades. Well what if I want to try my best to keep them from fading? Or if I at least want them to fade as little as possible but evenly rather than just at the theighs or something? Do I wash them rarely in the washer, or do I follow the soak methods? I want them to stay as dark as possible. I know that’s not what they’re for but I like the look.

Wet and dry abrasion will fade any denim due to the size of the indigo molecule; the reason most denim doesn't fade that much is because companies have spent decades trying to figure out how to keep denim from fading. Anyway, raw denim nerds and neophytes would contend that certain fading is outside the desired aesthetic and is therefore ruined, but that position is hopelessly finicky. If you're into the fading, just wear them and wash them as you will. If you're not into fading, then get something in the wash you'd prefer. Chances are that they won't fade a ton beyond the initial wash.

Wash em with a detergent for black clothes.
Wash em inside out
Give them a first wash pretty quickly.

if you dont want them to fade , then why are you buying raw selvedge denim? it defeats the purpose. because they are raw, the indigo dye will bleed a lot and cause high contrast fades. thats the whole point. if you dont want this, then buy some dark wash rinsed jeans where the dye is set in and wont fade as much.

You can wash them in the wash, but on cold with woolite or no detergent, inside out and wait at least 2-3 days a week of wear for 6-9 months before washing them. The first wash is most important for establishing stuff like honeycombs etc. Different denim will have different requirements though. Like for instance new standards vs nudies. I washed my first new standards too soon, the second pair I waited about two years before actually washing them (a hot soak every couple of months is different than actually putting them in the washing machine but also can be beneficial to establishing honeycombs etc)let alone a cold soak with/without woolite) and the end fade is gonna be highly dependent on the first wash. With some jeans like Nudies (I hate to say it but it's true) you can't really put that much wear and tear on them before the crotch blows out. I rode a bicycle and walked around for nearly a year and a half after first wash with some new standards before the crotch blew out, while with nudies that happened pretty much immediately after washing (which weakens the denim etc)

I didn’t say they were selvedge. In fact, they’re nothing special, at all. They’re just a pair of Levi 511 jeans.

These won't fade much unless you wear them a ton, and the fades you do get won't look much like the high contrast, "aesthetic" fades raw denim nerds seek to attain.

Ok. Do I still go months between washes? And do I soak or machine wash?

I’ll buy shit like that eventually. I’m poor right now and I wanted something dark. I didn’t want to have to order online and no stores in my area carry anything good because my city sucks.
