Hello watch people, I don't wear a lot of watches and I'm not terribly informed on watches (I own a Rolex Cellini Time that I got as a gift from a client, looks exactly like picrel). I'm looking to get a new watch, but I'd like something that could display the phases of the moon that isn't over $10k or so (would get the Cellini Moonphase, but alas it's quite a bit more than that).

I think blacks haven't ruined Rolex yet, they have ruined the very big brands like invicta, hublot .... any piece that uses diamonds and its too big.

one of the reason that I think "small-ish" watches can still be super elegant ( considering that the trend now is "big-ish") is that blacks in general don't use small with clean-lines watches.

Temperature mostly. Quartz watches are mostly affected by temperature; much less by position or humidity. I want to see how they run at various temperatures (probably 8, 23, 30, and 38 Celsius). Luckily taking accurate-ish measurements of quartz watch timing is pretty straightforward with high-speed photography, though it does depend a bit on your monitor refresh rate, network lag to time servers, etc. If I were more serious I'd have a dedicated gps pulse-per-second machine.

I won't be trying to have it serviced any time soon, it's too rare. It still runs +30 to 40 seconds per day, but runs consistently. It's a real pain having a tuning fork watch run fast, since you can't set the hands backwards - after a few days, I have to advance the hands almost twelve hours to get it back to the right time.

Well, maybe you might be able to purchase a 'donor' watch that is similar or in semi-working condition...I don't know, just thinking off the top of my booze.

What will happen when you've completed your collection? In other words, will you start a new 'subject' of the collection? I could gently suggest 'all Daniel's pocket watches' but I think you'd have some competition from me...lol

>>13991564
The most commonly damaged parts of an accutron are the coils and the index wheel; getting a donor slava with those two being functional would basically require getting another working slava.

You can't set the hands backwards because unless the tension in the canon pinion is literally perfect, you'll be pushing the index wheel backwards against the fingers, shearing off the teeth on the wheel and ruining it.

There are a lot of historically important watches in the evolution of chronometry. That said, like I mentioned, I want to write more about my collection, rather than just start arbitrarily buying some other kind of watch. That's the kind of unfocused accumulating that turns a collection into a hoard.

More or less. Most of my haq watches (including the 4mega) are 40+ years old, so some quartz aging is expected and I don't expect them to perform within their original accuracy specs. I'm more interested in their temperature response; even if their accuracy has fallen because their average rate has drifted, are they as precise as they should be across different temperatures? I suppose it's also a way to get a sense of badly they've aged, but that's less of a concern of mine. I expect the 4mega, which uses a single 4mhz AT-cut crystal, to do better than the Seikos, which have traditional xy-cut tuning fork crystals that I expect to age worse. But we'll see.

>>13991675
Many watches can synchronise themselves with radio or gps signals. The idea is that if the watch is reset every night, it will always have the right time. These are often advertised as "atomic watches", although they're usually just standard quartz watches in terms of their internal timekeeping - if you had a standard watch that you reset to time.gov every night you'd have basically the same thing. The junghans dial shows the location of the five current radio stations that broadcast time signals. Unlike most radio controlled watches, the junghans is also a high accuracy quartz watch in its own right, advertising 8spy accuracy, even when unassisted. I've turned off the radio sync feature to see how true that claim is.

Stop treating watches as stocks, it needs more than the brand name to retain value.
The railmaster looks better. Both watches have really nice proportions due to the smaller size but the AK looks a bit less interesting to me. The RM is more interesting with the triangles.

Btw. omegas dogshit branding names are super confusing to get into as a noob. Some are named railmaster seamaster, wtf.
The 1957 special edition looks the best. And probably could retain some value.

Good morning wt

The beta 21 was the first swiss quartz mivement and the first commercially successful quartz movement. The Seiko 35sq astrong came to the market famously on Christmas Eve 1969, but was released in extremely limited quantity and had very poor reliability. The beta 21 used an independent wheel similar to an accutron to advance the hands, rather than a more traditional stepper motor. The main reason wasn't for a smooth-sweeping second hand - while the second hand ticks 256 times per second, this was an era when a dead-beat second was actually a desirable complication - but rather for power consumption. Frequency dividers at the time used a lot of power, and the main goal of CEH at the time was a watch with a power reserve longer than a year (ceh had 1hz stepper motor prototypes but did not end up bringing them to market). Once more power-efficient frequency dividers became available, swiss quartz watch manufacturers quickly moved to stepper motor designs.

Omega had by far the most beta 21 watches produced. The movement was expensive and was fairly quickly abandoned, but the worked okay. Common problems are issues with the date advance. The beta 21 was initially advertised at 60spy accuracy, but like many accuracy claims of the period, it's a little dubious - it's not clear how a non-thermocompensated 8khz (nit even the modern 32khz) crystal could be expected to achieve that.

Here's the automatic movement, cal. 7270, 21600bph, and pretty flat, the reversing wheels are in-line with the rest of the gear train. Also the design looks familiar, I think this might be the direct predecessor to my 28800bph cal. 7710 Leopard.

There's no day quickset so that's why it's single language.

It has no day quickset, without it it's impossible to make the day wheel jump one (for the other language) instead of the ususal two. The extra space between the days is just left blank. See pic.

My example was manufactured in 1970, 1969 was about the year Seiko and Citizen made day quicksets standard on most of their movements, allowing for bilingual days. The early Seiko 6106A and B was the same, no quick setting, and one language. Later the C added that.

Crystals do age. The 9983 is user-adjustable, though adjusting the twin quartz movements is pretty difficult without specialized equipment (I've certainly never tried). When I timed mine the rate had drifted significantly (it is forty years old), but the precision and temperature response was still good enough to maintain the original precision of 5spy assuming daily wear (between 12 and 18 hours per day), given how small the difference between rates at different temperatures was.

These tests were just done with eye and find but error estimates were included when I did my analyses. The current test I just started is using high-frequency video to improve the errors.

True, but it's been to space plenty of times and it's based off of the 861 movement, which is in fact certified for intra and extravehicular activities in space, meaning it went through all the same tests the 321 went through that allowed it to be used as a tool on the moon and various other missions.
