i am pretty sure i am agreeing with you in the end here but there is no gap between what i wear at home and what i wear at work or out for a night. my whole shelf would be considered niche but there are a lot of wearable, crowd pleasing scents i have gotten compliments and positive reactions like jxxv, wonderwood, lddm, and invasion barbare

i think the riskiest or most experimental thing i have worn casually was odeur 73 but that one isn't unpleasant, just very aldehydic

But the thing is that LA Nuit barely lasts 3 hours on my skin and I feel PH is too mature for me given I have a young looking face.

Tempo is snice. Depends what you like out of a patchouli scent. Tempo is quite light and somewhat floral, not at all a heavy patchouli scent. More of a spring/summer scent IMO.

I’d say if you like sweeter/heavier patchouli, YSL Tuxedo is better.

Yeah I’ve got a sample of it righ now, huge patch opening but it dies out and turns into pine, and then finishes as a strong sandalwood, at least on my skin. Overall a clean and interesting scent.

I also have a sample of Byredo Oud Immortal and for me it used patch a lot better. It isn’t noticeable at first but it’s a really nice combo of patch oud and musk. Much more earthy than tempo.

its relative, too. what once was avant garde becomes the norm. avignon in 2002? certainly unique. but look what came in its wake: cardinal (2006), incense extreme (2007) and full incense (2010), among others. now avignon is the reference incense rather than bleeding edge. almost the same for wonderwood (2010), although i would not say it was avant-garde for its time, it still was an unbalanced, uncompromisingly woody fragrance where most perfumers would put woods as a star note among a more balanced pyramid composition. but now everyone wants wonderwood or something like it, it's their most popular bottle. kyoto and 2man are also very wearable

seems redundant. just use unscented moisturizer instead of the aftershave and unscented shampoo. apply a little of the fragrance to your hair, you'll get the same effect in the end. i've used higher end bar soaps like mistral and i don't notice that it sticks around any longer than something cheap like irish spring. its nice in the shower but thats the only real benefit in my experience

I bought a bottle of Tempo because I'm a huge patchouli monster. It's good but doesn't crack my top five in the category. I definitely get the mate note talked about in the sales copy, along with mild florals. For me it's not enough of a hardcore Patchouli scent. If you haven't tried any of these, here are my personal top 5:
1 - Santa Maria Novella Patchouli - brutalist earthy patch with mild supporting notes, but basically hardcore patchouli.
2 - Dior Patchouli Imperial - strongly patch but lots of sandalwood and citrus round it out.
3 - Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli - another brutalist patch, supported by classical Italian masculine cologne notes.
4 - Tom Ford Patchouli Absolu - patch with wood and cypress; mature and masculine.
5 - Montale Patchouli Leaves - patch, vanilla, and some wood; sweet, dank, and everlasting.

Honestly, if you put a two swabs on your chest or wrist and like the way it wears on you, I say go for it. You can get 100ml for $130-150 on ebay, maybe a bit less depending on the day. You're not going to run into many, if any who have heard of DS Durga, let alone own any of their fragrances. For that price, it's worth getting a fragrance that's unique and will make you stand out.

Tried Music Festival yesterday. I found it very pleasant, but I couldn't help but think it smelled just like JXXV (which I own) with a pot note at the top that disappears quickly. I've noticed that polarizing scents seem to indicate wealth or hidden wealth. One of my old bosses (executive type motherfucker with big dick energy) used to wear TdH and while I'm not a fan of it, it worked well on him and gave him a rough edge to his rounded out appearance. went to whole foods the other day and noticed they have fragrance oils by a brand named kuumba made. they're all pretty snice but amber paste stood out. i checked online and it's pretty well loved in the community. I bought it for 10 bucks and tried it at home. it's a beautiful rich resinous amber that's almost animalistic. the paste is thick and comes with a dabber. anybody else try these? I'm gonna go back and cop some more. also this stuff has s t u p i d longevity. a dab (not a swipe or smear) will literally last until the next day. I made the mistake of wearing too much on my neck and behind my ears the first day and it put me in a headlock, broke my back, fucked me in the ass and make me humble. this shit easily outlasts my entire collection by hours.

Kuumba Made oils are legit. My favorites are Tunisian Patchouli and Amber and Myrrh. I layer Tunisian Patchouli with Dior Patchouli Imperial (godly) and Amber and Myrrh with Kiehl's Original Musk (unbelievably sexy) and it boosts their performance to well over 12 hours. But they are great on their own. Their performance are really good. My local Whole Foods doesn't carry Amber Paste but it's got a cult following so I may just have to order online.

So I went to my local Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus yesterday to sniff these. Tuxedo was very underwhelming. I got no patchouli at all. It's basically fruity, boozy and a bit of spice. It's such a well blended patch with just the right amount of soil that blends well with that mate note. The violet in this is beautiful. I ended up purchasing a bottle with some Christmas money. Took home samples of Oud Palao and Tam Dao EDP. Loved both equally. Our Palao reminds me a bit of Oud Ispahan but with a more striking oud. Smells deeper. Diptyque has such good frags. this would be answerable if we knew one or two notes she likes. even though you mentioned ultime id just be recommending off ultime's note list and for all i know she might end up disliking one of these main notes.

i recommend what i say to everyone who comes to /frag/ looking for advice on gifts: get samples and a gift card. fragrance preferences are usually pretty finicky and you dont want someone to keep a whole bottle and wear something out of politeness. i would get the feminine sample pack from luckyscent and a gift card for the site.

to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Dior Fahrenheit. The scent is extremely avant-garde, and without a solid grasp of theoretical perfumery, most of the notes will go over a typical wearer's head.
