I wear cheap combat boots because I like them and since I don't care how it's perceived I wear them more confidently so I get more compliments when wearing them over when I'm wearing nicer boots I'm not really sure about. it's unusual to see desert boots (and most other ankle boots) with fleece lining though so it looks odd on those either way given the length of the shaft

Go to a proper boutique, shoe store, or workwear shop to try on boots with someone who knows what they're talking about.

With leather boots you'll often need to size down by one size to account for stretching during the break-in period. New leather boots should feel pretty snug and sometimes stiff as well depending on the leather.

Make sure you buy boots with welt construction (look it up) so a cobbler can easily perform repairs. Cheap boots often use glued soles that will fall apart much faster and are harder to replace. Some cheap manufacturers will even add detailing to imitate the look of welt construction and make the boot appear to be of a higher quality.

Look for boots made with full grain leather versus split grain or suede (a type of split grain). Full grain means the hide is left intact and it will be thicker and more durable.
Split grain means they split the leather along the width to obtain multiple thinner pieces of leather. It's more economical to produce but wears poorly compared to full grain.

Suede is split grain leather that has been turned inside out and sheared down to an even nap. It is prone to water damage, which is why its use is often limited to shoes rather than boots.
Roughout or reverse leather is full grain leather that has been turned inside out with no splitting involved. It is very durable and much more water and dirt resistant that suede.

That's a good deal. Do you have the wardrobe to match? You can't just wear those boots with anything. Also bummer about no returns. If you're really set on them I'd go a half size down so you have room for a chunkier insole or thicker socks if they're still too roomy.

I really love the look of pic related. It's not necessarily the colour (although I do like really that) but the shape of it - it's chunky but not too chunky. Problem is it's £315. What are some cheaper alternatives for a poorfag? I'm thinking the sub-£150 range.

Not a lot really, you're into fashion boots territory there. The best for around that might be Clarks or Kurt Geiger maybe. Solovair can be had for slightly above that (180ish) and might be your best bet. Other option is to look on eBay and the likes for second hand or factory seconds.

I'm nervous to buy online, and I don't know how their sizes compare to standard. I have a narrow foot, but I'll wear them with wool socks and insoles most likely.

Really liking the chukka idea, may even take it hunting in the spring with some puttees/gaiters. I've wanted a pair since high school.

Unless they injure your feet you should keep wearing them until you can invest into a serious pair. I'll need to have an idea of budget and what sort of work you're in before I can make recommendations. Until then perhaps look at Thorogood. They have a range of affordably priced boots for almost all blue collar careers and the pairs I've worn have ran true to size.
