To the Guerlainbro from last thread: don't bother with Vetiver. These old frags have a cult following, hence the glowing reviews, but let me tell you it's definitely an acquired taste. Harsh soapy vetiver drying down to sweet and sour vetiver. For the same price you can buy Encre Noir Sport and get a modern, more wearable version of what Vetiver is going for. As for heritage, it starts nice and spicy/sweet, kind of like Old Spice (which I like). Then it dries down to a generic old guy scent. It's still not terrible, and it pairs well with fixing shit around the house, working on cars, etc. However I prefer more modern takes on "gentleman" frags like 1725, At the Barbers, or even Penhaligon frags.

t. Bought both Vetiver and Heritage to see what the hype was about and was severely disappointed.

A city on fire: really lovely smoke, but there’s also a saltiness to it on the opening that I don’t really like. It smells almost like barbecue. But by the dry down it’s just the smoke, which I love. Excited to try the others. Reminds me of black afghano but milder and without the cannabis note.

Guys, I need your help.
I can't decide between fucking Layton and Herod for my friend's birthday.

Why PdM?
1. The closest to designer you can get but with the superb quality and lack of some "dangerous" notes you might face in other niche brands.
2. I can have it for a really nice price in my country.
3. From my short experience with them, they are real crowd pleasers and I believe he'll enjoy it.

About the guy: turns 25, has his own decent business (in a field of alcohol/restaurants/bars etc) and a lot of different appointments through the day.
I'm afraid that he may dislike sourness of tobacco in Herod and sweetness of Layton.
What do you think? We had a lot of PdM owners here before.

I would say Layton is probably safer, but I agree, buying fragrances for someone else unless you know them super well (like a parent or sibling) is always hit or miss. Hell, even with my mother, I’ve bought her 3 frags, one she liked, one she loves and is her new signature scent, and one she hated and wound up giving back to me.

I’d say you’d be better off getting him a set of PdM samples and a gift card.

One of the PdMfags here. Both are snice. Both are cold weather frags. Herod is sweet and spice and a little more masculine, Layton is a little stronger and more like a gourmand. Layton is more expensive. I've gotten equally good reactions for both, but Layton seems to have beast-mode performance. My opinion? Buy him 2 decants not the whole bottle.

I had a sample of this. Very much an old school oriental. Lots of benzoin, tonka and cinnamon gives it a sweet bubblegum drydown but the opening is barbershoppy with citrus and carnation. It lasted for ages but I have no idea what it projects as I was dabbling it from a 1ml vial. It was nice, but too warm and sweet for me.

Its a great drydown regardless, and I agree, its not a sugary, cloying sweetness.
The opening is very old fashioned, it doesnt bother me but I'm glad its short lived.
If the cedar didnt all but disappear for me in the end I'd have copped a bottle already... we'll see if I can be swayed with a few more wears.

It’s very popular among those that enjoy fragrances, but it’s not common in the grand scheme of things. I have a bottle and love it. It’s too expensive, I’ll admit, but it’s not something to worry about. The chances of you going somewhere and smelling it on another person are incredibly slim.

People claim this shit for every fragrance that gets memed or popular. Everyday I read shit here or on some other fragrance forum about how "Bleu de Chanel will make you smell like every other guy in the office/street/club/etc..." I have never smelled this shit in the wild on anybody. I’m not a huge Tom Ford fan, so can’t help you too much there. Only one I own is Fucking Fabulous. I did like Lost Cherry a lot too, though.

FF isn’t too linear. It starts off quite sweet, like I said, reminds me of amaretto, or maybe a bit like cherry lifesavers, but as it dries, the sweetness fades a bit, and you get more of a leather/woody/herbal kind of thing. You don’t really get much vanilla throughout, the tonka and almond are much more prominent.

It's literally love-it-or-hate-it. If you hate it you'll find it one of the most disgusting scents. I love it, and would put it in my top 5. It does smell like a urinal cake with a bit of animalistic vibes. I don't get piss though. Kinda like a hot sweaty room. Very floral in the opening, but the dry down is pure magic. Warm, musky, a bit leathery. Hard to describe but it wears beautifully on clean skin. Also, the performance is off the charts. I don't own vintage but apparently it's a whole nother beast. My bottle is from 2016 and it outpreforms everything else in my collection. This is pure masculinity, so if you're into sweet or gourmand or whatever you most likely will hate this.

If you're interested in my sophmoric take on them, they both seemed very similar and "fresh". A little bit more Abercrombie-store smelling than I expected when initially sprayed on but I liked the smell a lot as time went on. I expected quorum to be a little more woody/smoky based on an anons description but I am very happy with them both and I think their slight differences will make switching between them fun

Smell some vetiver heavy fragrances and see how this sit with you. Sycamore, grey vetiver are earthy but wearable.

YSL rive gauche or invasion barber are good barber shop scents.

If you’re looking for something with an old school cologne vibe, look at the aqua di Parma line. It might fit what you’re looking for.

It’s really hard to find something that’s in between the generic Abercrombie vibe and something that’s more niche that will get you mixed reactions.

If you have a saks or Neiman Marcus near you go there and you can find a lot of these as well as the “exclusive” designer fragrance lines.

I could try it myself but it’s a little awkward. From what little experimenting I’ve done it seems that the big spray close up has a much stronger immediate presence but also fades quicker, but a spray from further away seems to be less noticeable, but lasts longer on my skin. I have a weird question.

I'm a dude, and I always thought women's perfumes smell great (I'm supposed to, no?). Now, most are obviously for women with highly flowery notes, but most of the perfumes for men do not work for me whatsoever. In other words, I think they fucking stink. Leather, wood, and all that shit, just no.

In one of his videos where he's showing it to a thot she said it's "citrusy" and then he said "with a woody punch, no?" This leads me to believe it's going to be an iso-e super bomb like Terre D'Hermes, Sauvage, Aventus, Dylan Blue. Something metallic, musky but with a unique touch. Probably going to be some spice like cardamom or cinnamon, and definitely some incense.

glad i saw this. today i went to try some Tom Ford. Tobacco Vanille smells like honey to me, something slightly off about it.

Then I tried Vanille Fatale, thinking it must be a female-only fragrance. However I'm considering getting it - absolutely loved it. It was a sweet and dried down into a really smooth, maybe slightly leathery(?) vanilla. It would probably really suit girls better (i'd love this on my girlfriend i think).

Same position as you with this. I would love to wear this but don't think I can.

Any other opinions on Vanille Fatale?

Their early work was a little too floral for my taste but when Cool Water came out in 88 I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The cologne has a crisp, clear, smell and a new accord of environmental sandalwood that really gives the cologne a big boost. It’s been to Green Irish Tweed but I think Cool Water has a far more refreshing aquatic, smell.

Yes it is. In 94 davidov began their long line of flankers for Cool Water including Cool Water: Night Dive and Cool Water: Caribbean. I think their undisputed masterpiece is the classic orginal Cool Water, a cologne so refreshing most people don’t care about the dry down, but they should because it’s not just a soft Cotten smell with some floral notes it’s a personal statement about the fragrance industry itself.

I tried Vanille Fatale at the airport a few weeks back. I thought it was really snice. There was the vanilla, of course, but something else I couldn’t put my finger on. Kinda smelled like banana in a very good way. Might have to cop, though I have a few other frags on my list first.

Tom Ford Private Blend has a lot feminine leaning unisex, or womens perfumes that could be pulled off by men. Santal Blush, Plum Japonais, etc. You'd be better off finding a store where you could smell them than ordering samples.
