What are /wt/'s thoughts on the Seiko Astron and watches like them?

I never see anyone ever talk about them to the point where I don't even know what the generic name given to these types are, nor what the general opinion is about them. I figure that people immediately write them off because of the quartz movement.

How what works? If you mean the eureka electric clock its very simple!
Down by the big balance there's an egg shaped disc, turning with the balance, when the balance is rotating the egg pushes the lever, wich pushes the wheel. A spring grabs the wheel to make sure the wheel doesnt go back once its pushed! Its electric so there is no spring or weights on this clock, it gets a tiny push with every turn and runs on 1.5 volt!
I dont know all the terms and words for parts in english so hard g

With their actual useful technology they embed in their watches, effective modern marketing, and an array of different lines of watches, that in themselves include such a deluge of designs that you simply cannot resist 1 or 2 even if you hated the idea of owning casio. They close in on you and embrace with their spindly cold japanese arms and laugh as you are powerless, groping your cock as the doors close and the train departs from the station.

Mine was $174 on Yahoo jp. It is a twin quartz movement specced at 5 seconds per year, the only 5spy watch movement family made by daini Seiko. Seiko has made four 5spy movement families ever - the 948x, 968x, and 998x, which I own, and a limited edition 9f movement. All their other haq (including the current production 9f) are 10spy or more. 5spy is a pretty universal barrier. The only credible tighter spec ever from a quartz watch was the citizen 8650, a 4mhz high-frequency quartz rated 3spy. The citizen 7370 (the one I own) is much more common; it's rated at 5spy with essentially the same movement. Aside from that the only two tighter specced watches were atomic watches (from hoptroff, for example) specced at 1 second per millennium (they actually contain a miniature cesium atomic clock). Morgenwerk and hoptroff have made tighter specced quartz watches on paper but the evidence so far is they don't really meet spec. Citizen will release a 1spy wristeatch soon but hasn't yet.

I mean you don't determine the weight limit on a bridge by building it, driving heavier trucks over it until it breaks, weighing the last truck, and rebuilding it. Quartz crystals have decently understood temperature responses that can be reasonably well measured and controlled - a big part, especially today, is how much effort you want to go into calibrating any specific watch. I'm sure there was indeed testing on high-end haq watches in the late 70s and early 80s; I wouldn't be surprised if all that distinguished Grand movements vs Superior movements was their testing results after whatever adjustment that could be done economically at scale was done.

These days at least it is very reasonable to measure the precise rate of a watch to much better than 1spy precision and thus spec your watch at whatever level you choose. The biggest issue is aging - it is hard to predict how any given quartz crystal will age, which is why it is such a shame that so few modern quartz movements are user-adjustable (though I believe the Seiko 9f is, if I remember correctly).

Serious question. Does the level of finishing on a movement have any effect on the efficiency and performance of the movement? In other words, higher end watches tend to feature extreme finishing in their movements, but will it contribute to the movements actually being more accurate long-term (or even something like contributing to less wear on the movement through use)?

I've never gotten a satisfactory answer to this...(I don't mean I want to hear the answer I want to hear, I mean that I want some quantifiable information that says, 'yes, a well finished balance cock will perform better than a brutally cut one because xxxx').

generally no. Anglage, perlage, etc. are non-functional. That said, there is certain things that have an impact on the long-term reliability of a watch. Precisely machined parts will be easier to disassemble and reassemble.

The precisely machined parts makes sense, of course. Well, there we are.

>>13875057
Hmm...but aren't the contact surfaces mostly jeweled, and or gear and wheel contacts? In other words, I could understand that finishing of the escape wheel would make obvious differences....but the sides of the escape wheel (as in, the spokes of the wheel) could be rough as shit and it wouldn't make a difference, as long as the wheel itself was balanced by weight properly...right? Or am I far off...?

Hope everyone is having a good night....as usual, it's quiet.

Sorry, you're quite right. Now for the question that is really at the heart of it all. Do any of you actually find it attractive in a piece to have all the decorations on the movement that are not connected at all with the running of the watch? There's a part of me that can't help but see it as unnecessary extravagance (though that's somewhat laughable considering what it is that the ornamentation is carved on). But to me it's like a well decorated handgun....Fine to put in a museum, but I'd never want to use one as a real weapon.

With watches it's very strange....on the one hand, there's an obvious attraction to them due to their aesthetic value...if not, we'd all be using cheap quartzs and not thinking of anything else. But the decorations on a movement really seem odd to me...I don't know why I can't square the circle on that one.

Yes, it's the Russian copy of the 214. Again, not 100% sure about the dial but it seems decently legitimate as far as I can tell from the very limited references out there. Hopefully it's runs okay because it's basically unserviceable.

Yes, your writing style is pretty recognizable.

>>13875098
My interests are obviously fairly technical in nature but I am a fan of very well-finished movements. But, separately, I am not as much a fan of thoroughly decorated movements. A simple finish like a dufour is much more what I look for than something gaudy like a FP Journe.

It hurts so much more because there is no ambiguity in the statement..lol Eh, such is life.

Given your knowledge though, couldn't you at least be able to attempt to service it if things are not great? >> No.13875137

I'm definitely not qualified to service it. Unfortunately, if it doesn't run well, the issue is most likely "the index wheel needs replacing." And no-one will likely agree to disassemble it, since if they damage the coils, they are irreplaceable, unlike a normal accutron, for which replacement coils are readily available.

I took a spectrogram of my 300Hz Longines and my 360Hz Accutron at one point. The peaks are super clean. If you want to get a tuning fork I recommend an accutron 218, or if you want to spend a little more, an ESA9162 like the longines ultronic or omega f300 (the movement was used in tons of watches, many of which have awesome names, like the tissot tissonic). Those two movements are the most reliable and have the best parts availability.

Thanks Anon...I will admit, in the very cursory research I did, I came to the conclusion that I absolutely wanted one of the old Bulovas. The technology isn't want interest me as much as the idea, if that makes any sense. As an example, the other day I was thinking about getting one of the cheap Seagull tourbillons, not because of the quality of the piece, but so that I could eventually take it apart. They're ugly as shit, but it has nothing to do with the watch, it has everything to do with what is inside.

Granted, the two ideas are not the same at all, but it's how I'm thinking. I'd never take apart a fully functioning Accutron...that would be ludicrous. As would taking apart a proper tourbillon. But it's all about having the experience of it, rather than collecting. Does any of that make sense?

The 214s are fine, they're just more difficult to service, and donor parts are not quite as easy to find. In particular the adjustment of the index mechanism is much more touchy - the 218 has an improved indexing system that allows the fingers to be adjusted by moving a collet, vs the 214 when the watchmaker has to literally adjust the fingers by bending them with tweezers under a microscope.

You should also decide whether your heart is set on an "original" spaceview or are happy with a conversion. I consider my conversion to be a true spaceview, since the whole *point* of the spaceview is how they were converted commonly, and since aftermarket conversion kits were officially available from the factory anyways, I don't consider them undesirable frankens. If you want an "original" spaceview you'll need to do a lot of research and pay a premium.

To have a future excuse when spelling goes to shit, however tonight it was another Anon who mentioned not getting drunk alone. While I appreciate the sentiment, which is normally shared between friends, I did want to respond to him about it.

Normally I do try to talk about watches though, or at least questions that have plagued me and that I think are important enough in the general balances of horology to throw out to you guys. No matter what, I always learn something, and hopefully from discussion we all learn a little something too...though in truth I'm only a specialist in very specific watches, and even that I'm not as well researched as any of the watchmakers who occasion this board.

The date wheel misalignment is a legitimate concern. My twin quartz watches have date issues. That said, depending on what's wrong with the mechanism, donor parts are often available from cheaper calibers.

The maintenance on a penisquartz is no different than any other quartz. They should be disassembled and cleaned every few years; if you don't, they'll probably keep running for decades anyways. The watches run a huge gamut of quality; the last two steel 9983-7000 pieces I saw on Yahoo Jo sold for around 2k usd while cheaper ones and go for under 10 USD. There's always plenty available on Yahoo jp but if you're looking for rarer, higher end models, it can involve a couple months of waiting. But on a pure science level of how they work, I dont spend any time looking into it really, or have read any books on watches.

Yet I spend so much time looking at videos and refreshing this page. I would like to somehow profit off of watches, but I am no artisan, given the chance at becoming a watchmaker I could not tell you one way or the other whether I would be into it or possess the skills needed. So what is there to do? I am no writer, no presenter, and certainly there is no one I can talk about this with IRL. It feels like loving coffee or video games. Rolex is not a grail watch and most peoples grails offer the best of their particular interest and thus cannot be underwhelming. I appreciate your introspection, get rid of that hint of defeatism tho.
Sounds like you have the needed level to start trading/refurbishing watches - you don't need to know compression ratios on springs in some Tudor movement to be able to move watches around or to be of use.
Start with one or two items that you can't possibly lose too much on, see where that takes you.
Good luck either way.

Sarbs are irrelevant at their discontinued price point. The skx is garbage at 200, their divers in general are prone to having QC issues. Even seiko 5s are trash for the money, better off going quartz, or russian, or an orient tristar or citizen. The specs of their watches almost never line up with the price in terms of value.

Cool older pieces, some cool limited editions, great history. All that is good, but nowhere near enough for people to go around acting like they are worth it.

https://www.amazon.com/STARKING-Automatic-stainlessWatch-Fashion-Waterproof/dp/B07GZLCG1Z/ref=sr_1_3?m=A318YZ4WAVEGF4&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1543375813&sr=1-3

The bracelet is apparently good. I've contemplated getting it before because of the value, but I don't need it. You'll also get sapphire and a high beat movement. China has been ramping it up.

If you were reaaaallly going to spend 113 on a seiko 5 though I'd personally say to punch up $17 for a mako or ray. Or honestly just get some variation of the amphibia, and get a milanese/shark mesh strap too and still be under 110 if you want all steel. Or get 5 natos instead.

And if you wanted to sacrifice a little water resistance and go down to 50m then there are a bunch of different dial options for this.

Is this thing worth the $200? Should I get the one with the metal band?

Well when you put it that way, fuck. Anyway, thank you for the suggestions. I'd get the Starking or Citizen for only a dressy setting. I've thought a lot about the Ray 2 but it just doesn't click with me. The Mako USA 2 is interesting though but last I checked it was close to 200+. The amphibia doesn't fit the style I'm looking for right now but I like them for what they are. I'll give the Mako USA 2 a closer look, as long as it fits under the cuff (a preference I forgot to mention!) Basically I'm trying to be a one watch guy (minus a G shock or other digital beater)

To add, I seriously thought of getting the Orient Defender I have to admit. But the poor lume and the lack of Seiko-level horological significance turned me off.

What would you suggest as an alternative to a SARB033, if it isn't worth it at current prices?

A fuckton of microbrands with watches 3-500.
maen
borealis
brew (ok these probably aren't amazing value propositions but they look neat to me)
lorier
phoibos
emgwatches
dagaz
Tisell

Those are mainly divers, but I like divers so those are the ones I know. But you could hate all of those, there are a million other ones, just do research and you can get something that is very specific to your taste.

If you don't want a microbrand then I'd say a hamilton, not a fan tissots are still good for the $, or lower end fredrique constant, certina too, basically just lower end swiss. Laco's cheapest pilot is around 400. Also, little bit different type of watch since it's just dress and you aren't gonna beat on it, but orient star classics are cheap as fuck right now, I've seen them as low as 250 new. Orient stars in general haven't had their prices fucked, if you can still find a retrograde around 350-400 that isnt bad either.

Thanks, I was speaking of something not only specced like the SARB, but also similar size and style. I did find a similar orient star, but I don't see how it would be better.

I asked because I'm stuck between getting a SARB033 or a Certina Ds-2 chronograph, which are both very different I know.

Looks better: easily the JLC
More adaptable: definitely the Explorer

If you could only get one, I'd say get the Explorer. Wearing a steel sports watch with a suit is mehhh, but it's fine for office/casual wear.

Plus, more people will know what a Rolex is, if you're into that sort of thing.

if you go with the sarb you'll feel like a sucker paying the extra $100 for it being dscontinued. Not to mention, yeah it's a versatile piece for everyday, and the finishing is great and all that. But the bottom line that it's still just a basic black watch with indices, there will be be more of those in the future.

Yeah I kinda feel the same way, but I always kinda liked it (only now that I'm downsizing do i feel I have a spot for it) and I somewhat want to see what people mean when they say how much of a bargain it is. Based off what I've read it seems like it is still worthy of it's current price but that's not really the issue, I feel like for a little bit more i might be able to get something a bit nicer and perhaps more interesting.

Yeah i guess I'll hold off on it, in the end it's a *relatively* plain watch and I'll probably find something I like as much or more soon enough.
