A little bit more update for this bottle. Since there's not much review out there I want to share my thoughts for those who might be interested.

Opening reminds me of my TdHETF without the rotten smell, the bitter orange is pretty nice. The drydown reminds me of GIT for some reason, might be the sandalwood. Can't really smell anything else, probably they're mixed or masked under sandalwood notes.

I won't say the strength is weak, maybe subtle? Sometimes I have a hard time smelling it but I sure notice reactions from people (with only 1 or 2 sprays on chest or collarbone. Even on the initial spray it feels kinda weak and does not blast your nose like TdH and GIT does. Not sure if I want to recommend it though but I guess It's good if you want to be lowkey.

I'm a male in my twenties and I'm looking for a Fall/Winter everyday fragrance. Everyday usually consists of going to university (cozy European university town), meetings with clients (1 on 1 tutoring in their homes), sometimes meeting a friend or gym after that. I want the smell to last the whole time, but want it to be inoffensive and mass-appealing. Also, the cheaper, the better. Which out of the following I have sampled and liked should I pick? (I also included pic rel to give you a sense of my style).

Chanel Antaeus
Armani Code Profumo
Dior Homme Intense
John Varvatos Dark Rebel
Zadig&Voltaire This is Him
Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir

>> No.13834394

>>13834390
Of those I'd pick Bleu Noir as a daily driver, the others are too "offensive", night-oriented, or poor performing. Profumo has the best performance of all but imo is too sweet, only useful as a date scent. DHI and Dark Rebel have piss poor performance sadly.

Why not try Bleu de Chanel EDP or Parfum?

How come do you struggle with getting testers? Today I wanted to see what are these Hermes frags anons talk about so much lately. I had a nice chat with a qt at my perfume shop and after testing a few other frags that interested me I asked for a tester of Hermes. Of course. Most of my collection is made up of cheapies and designers, and as I mentioned Layton Exclusif will be my first niche bottle. And you're right, niche doesn't necessarily equate to better quality; but in the cases that it does, I would much prefer an interesting, out of the ordinary, heavenly scent with great performance for $150 than a synthetic headache for $80. Honestly in a lot of cases you can find niche fragrances for little more than the going price for your average Chanel or Dior. With some of the performance beasts, you can even make due with decants for a fraction of the full bottle price.

They merit discussion at the very least.

>>13834432
I agree that niche prices are often exorbitant (as are designers, for what you get in some instances), but to be fair, there are very few fragrances I'd buy at full retail (except for Dior Homme Parfum). You can find decants and discounted bottles of niche frags for comparatively decent prices online. For instance, it's pretty easy to find a 4.2 oz bottle of PDM Layton for $120 on Ebay; it goes for $290 retail. I do the same thing with expensive clothes; it's no different. As for the smell of niche, I beg to differ. Some of the best fragrances I've ever smelt have been from Roja, Memo, Amouage, Serge Lutens, etc. If you don't like animalic notes, maybe don't buy animalic fragrances?

>>13834446

True I suppose. But you can also make an incredible impression with the right scent. Crowd pleasers work, of course, and I'm not trying to make the argument that I don't like designers or crowd pleasing fragrances - I own and use a number of them regularly. But just like I have standout pieces in my wardrobe, I'd like to have standout fragrances, and a lot of times those can be harder to find in the designer realm. Seriously, there are niche fragrances out there that are utterly intoxicating (Roja Creation-E comes to mind for me, or Dior Feve Delicieuse). The notion that they all smell like ass is ridiculous.

Well no, they don't but on any regular Saturday night at a bar it's going to be hard to beat a crowd pleaser with a niche scent. Sure if you are wearing it for yourself or at some big power meeting, then niche. I mean, I feel that. It would be the same thing for my outfit - if I'm going to a bar, I'm going to wear a nice bar outfit, with an appropriate fragrance to match. No disputing that, that's for sure. I also just like fragrances for the sake of them too though, just like how I dress for myself just as much as I do for others. There definitely are niche fragrances that are wildly overpriced and overhyped (Baccarat Rouge 540) though.

And yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of the Tuscan Leather and Tobacco Oud types. Love oud and leather when well blended, but those fragrances are hard to love.

not the guy you are talking with but leather is a large and longstanding category of fragrance. it is a common note widely available beyond niche. cuir de russie and knize ten are classics. for designer, you have ones like bulgari black (1998) which remains popular. john varvatos (2004) is a bestseller, enough that it has flankers. tom ford's tuscan leather (2007) is so popular drake named a song after it. i would say tom ford straddles the market between niche and designer but it is still very well known and popular.

look at any review of these frags on fragrantica and ctrl+f 'sexy'. especially on varvatos and tuscan leather you will get a lot of women reviewers who say this about them. you need to open up your horizons and try some leather frags, they are superb. you are missing out, and for a stupid reason. which leads me to my last point:

fragrance should about what you enjoy wearing, not what you imagine women want. do you let women dictate all of your choices?

>> No.13834976

>> No.13834996 [DELETED]

Most might have a leather note but not be strong leather smelling. I have TF Tuscan leather, I bought into all that garbage. Then later realized hey.. it's the smell of leather.. it's the smell of some old man from 1970.

Fragrantica reviews are not to be taken so seriously. It's like wine snobs who start talking about the notes in the wine they can taste but when a blind test of wines is done a lot of cheap wines end up on top.

I trust real experiences, actually going out with fragrances on and letting people decide who don't know of the fragrances. That's when leather scores low.

That's what Jeremy fragrance does, asks real people, not some 45 year old woman on fragrantica who took a sniff of a fragrance at a department store and then comes online to write some cliche review of a niche and expensive fragrance to make herself appear sophisticated and deep.

>fragrance should about what you enjoy wearing

Bit of a meme like just bee urself :-)

If I am out at a bar I want a fragrance that will get me the most interest from women yes, I'm not insecure enough to think "hmm screw them, I will wear what I want" and can actually let interest dictate what I wear because at the end of the day it gives me great openers as women tell me I smell good when they pass me.

I might sound like an asshole but a strong leather scent just isn't very mass appealing and an even bigger no on young or feminine guys.

You can sit alone being rejected by the world just to smugly tell yourself "heh, at least I like what I am wearing" but you do yourself no favors.

no, tastes change over time.

example 1: old spice original was originally made as a women's scent, but they just changed decided to market it to men instead. the rest is history

example 2: flowers used to be men's territory. the inventor of the first 'eau de cologne' even wrote that his fragrance was meant to evoke 'mountain daffodils and orange blossoms after the rain.'

example 3: the creator of the fougere worked for a fragrance atelier that made essences for women to put on their fans they would wave to send a romantic message, among other uses. the fougere (also known as 'barbershop' fragrances for their feature of lavender) is now seen as a quintessentially masculine fragrance

example 4: men's fragrances have become sweeter. there were some sweet fragrances before in the 80s, and aquatics in the 90s also had sweet undertones, but nothing compares to the vanilla-fruit domination of the men's market today. men's fragrances used to be predominantly musky, herbal, or spicy. it is rare to see a mainstream release like that now.

Choosing a fragrance that appeals to a large category of women makes the man ultimately in control manipulating fragrances to gain the highest level of interest.

wew, that backpedaling. first you said leather only exists in niche, now you have at least conceded that you were wrong on that point, even if you didnt acknowledge it. now lets move to the goal post you moved. leather is the foremost note in all of the fragrances i mentioned, not just lurking in the background.
>fragrantica reviews are not to be taken so seriously
>I trust real experiences
you contradict yourself here. the people who post to fragrantica have real experiences with fragrance. your point about cheap wine vs expensive wine isnt relevant because we're not talking about cheap vs expensive cologne. in fact the fragrances i mentioned span the range from cheap to expensive, so some cheap leathers have 'come out on top.' you are not really disagreeing with me here. the women on fragrantica are not 45 years old, lots of people post their own pics as profile pics, check it yourself. i put a mountain of evidence in front of you and you are hand-waving it away without even looking at it.
>I'm not insecure enough to think "I will wear what i want"
you also contradict yourself here. if you were secure in yourself you would wear what you enjoy, not what someone else enjoys. its fine if you want to use fragrance as a means to an end, but not everyone does that. you are still interpreting and judging fragrance through the lens of your motivation. many people are interested and enjoy fragrance for its own sake, and not a means to an end. other people have different interests and motivations than you, can you fathom that?
>you can sit alone...

AdP's Colonia Concentree range is a defo one of the best underrated mainstreaming-leaning niche lines.

Colonia Ambra is a regular feature in my autumn rotation; a great natural but slightly animalic, yet fresh smell with decent longevity. Oud and Leather are both worth a look too, Sandalo is quite good but there's cheaper alternatives like Tam Dao EDP or Egoiste so it's not really that remarkable.

The fragrances you listed do not smell of an old man in a leather jacket and they are not mass appealers anyway for women under 30.

>the people who post to fragrantica have real experiences with fragrance

No not really, a lot fall into the snob category like people here who think niche expensive means they are sophisticated and unique so their opinions are biased. What fragrances people actually like are radically different when they are blind tested and not by price and brand.

>because we're not talking about cheap vs expensive cologne

I love your failed attempts at being an intellectual with extremely poor reading comprehension and the concept of an analogy.

Let me break it down, when someone is presented with an expensive bottle of wine they act like it's so great because they think it reflects who they are and say they can definitely taste it is worth the price. Then you blind test them and it's all different.

It's the same concept with expensive niche fragrances versus cheaper mainstream (pleb) scents. If you like them, you must be an unsophisticated pleb, right?

>because we're not talking about cheap vs expensive cologne

Oh yeah you have looked through all the users pics and then concluded it also must certainly be them. Fucking gullible Gertie right here, no surprise you think niche means best.

I know the site well and the niche market. I've been doing this for 15 years.

>you also contradict yourself here. if you were secure in yourself you would wear what you enjoy, not what someone else enjoys

Your IQ is in the single digits, yeah? Convincing yourself you like a niche fragrance because it means you are deep and sophisticated versus the everyday people is a sign of insecurity.

I'm not wearing what "somebody" else enjoys, I am wearing something to appeal to the most amount of people to give me the greatest chance of success. I am in control here.

>if you like them you must be unsophisticated pleb, right?
>no surprise you think niche means best
how on earth did you arrive at this conclusion. i like lots of cheap fragrances. old spice original and nautica voyage are among my favorites of all time. im also aware niche has just as much use of synthetic ingredients as designer, so im not deluded on that front. last, there are lots of niche flops. if you spend time on base notes youll see that many of the niche-leaning reviewers are eager to recommend cheapies too, and they will usually have drug store bottles in their collection.
>convincing yourself you like niche...
not how i imagine myself or others all. i just like smelling different things. its like aromatherapy. nothing deep or sophisticated about me or my enjoyment at all
>more fantasy than lord of the rings
i could say the same about your own claim about getting laid. the difference is i believe you, i think thats possible, and hey, congrats, hope you had a nice experience.

anyway these are side-tracks to the original point of contention, which is that leather is a whole category of fragrance, there are many leather fragrances at all market levels, and there are people who enjoy them and think they are sexy. are they as popular as the vanilla-fruit bottles flying off the shelf today? of course not, i will agree with you there. even though i can admit this possibility, you cant seem to fathom the possibility that people, even young people, that find leather frags sexy. do you really believe this is beyond the realm of possibility, or is the world only possibly made up only of your own likes and dislikes?

My point a heavy leather smelling fragrance will never appeal greatly to women aged 16 to 30.

Nobody can really even debate that. If he wants to sit in a chair and smell the leather radiating off him though then each to their own. Leather fragrances are dad/grandad/dated.

Enjoy 1 bottle if it's a must but get something more appealing to hit the bars and get the women.

I'm trying to save some poor guy from wasting his money. I stand by my points that smelling of leather is not a great fragrance. if there is a light leather note in it, then that could be acceptable.

Fragrances like TF Tuscan leather are too much of a gamble and you often smell like an old man from 1970. Maybe if you're in some cafe reading literature you might be alright but if you are in a club with women under 30.. just no.

I made a reply to someone who posted a recommendation for a leather fragrance saying I didn't think leather was so great.

All my replies have then been replies to me. if you think a thread in which everyone agrees with whatever is posted is a good thread then I've got news for you. It's not. Debate is healthy and if you think difference of opinion should result in a ban perhaps a safe-space site such as tumblr is more appropriate for you.

Is it a bad thing really? They're literally making cologne waters, which are weaker than edt. I imagine that at some time in future that might be something I'd precisely look after. You know, apply cologne after a shower at gym and a couple hours later pick some other fragrance for the evening. Picking 1/2 frags a day is already quite limiting to me. I want a different frag in the morning, different in the evening.

Hit De Bijenkorf today. Got my bottle of Tuxedo. Had another very nice, helpful Dutch girl show me around a bit. Super qt. Petite, short, dyed silver hair, very pretty face with just stunning big blue eyes.

Tuxedo is super good. Very, very underrated. I’ve literally never heard anyone mention it here before. It’s patchouli, spices, it’s sweet but not too sweet, and buttery smooth. Try it if you get the chance.

She also gave me a sample of YSL Vinyle, which is nice, but nothing I haven’t smelled before. Basically vanilla, florals, and a little smoky resin. Smells high quality, but again, I’ve smelled the same thing several times before.

Took a look for Lost Cherry, unfortunately the lady at the Tom Ford booth said they’re not getting it until next week and I’ll be home by then, so that’s a no-go. Did get to try Fucking Fabulous, though, which I actually like quite a bit. Smells kind of like amaretto with some nice herbal freshness from the clary sage. May have to cop when I get home, since it’s on FragranceBuy now (or maybe the duty free at the airport will have it).

I bought a 125ml bottle of ADG Profumo but have barely worn at since I only really go out to work. Since I'm working in service I feel it may be too salty and smoky to be appropriate.
I keep my frags sheltered either on a rack or by my bed on the opposite side of the east facing window.
Should I worry about them going bad, even if I generally keep the blinds shut just enough to let a little light in? I'm just concerned I may end up having to throw out half bottles of some frags

Using top-selling fragrances as an argument in general is dumb. Most people don’t put much thought into buying fragrance. They go to the counter at Macy’s and pretty much buy whatever the lady there suggests (and of course, she’s getting paid to recommend specific scents).

The top-selling fragrances sell because of marketing and because they’re inoffensive, not because people necessarily like them the best. It’s something easy they can grab without having to think about it. Basically the McDonalds of fragrance.

Yup. The funniest part is that if Dior released say, a Sauvage flanker that had a heavy leather note, it’d be a top seller, which really just shows this dude has no clue what he’s on about.

I mostly wear niche frags, I have many that are more “exotic” than your standard aquatic freshie or ambroxan bomb that woman genuinely enjoy. It’s just about not being a retard and wearing something that smells like ass when you have a date. Leather can be super smooth and sophisticated if it’s done right, and women will absolutely like it if you wear it with confidence.

Lol. Oh yeah dude, easy girls like different frags!! It's like science n shit!!

The reality is YOUNGER women like sweeter frags. The majority that make up the 18-30 club scene.

Women over 40 will like different more mature frags but they are a smaller group to target going to clubs, bars etc.

They still wont like leather and sweaty ass smells though. I love how teenage incels try and give advice to a guy who is almost 40 and has had plenty of experience with frags and the club scenes. Most of you haven't ever been in a club lol.

It was true love, since then I have done all kinds of things but it never feels the same. A few months ago I went to the hooker area in my city and among them you find a few runaways that are desperate for cash so I picked up some 16 year old girl and she was so desperate for money and depressed I took her back to a motel and paid her only $15 for sex. It was bareback too because she looked too young to have fucked a lot of guys but I poured some whiskey on my dick after to kill any STD's if she had anything.

It was not like the girl I loved though and yes, she did complete me. I'll never stop loving her.

got these samples in yesterday.
I've tried a few of them before.

The By Killians are both really good, but Straight to Heaven has a sharpness when smelled up close that Im convinced is a bad reaction with my body. I get similarities to tam dao and molocule 01 in both, StH being sweetened with rum and vanilla, and Sacred wood with the inclusion of a bright, floral opening i dont see listed anywhere. I dont foresee dishing out 300 sheckels for either of them, but I'd consider a decant of both.

its a big difference. EOs are pure oil. market fragrances dilute these oils in a carrier oil or alcohol. extrait and parfums are diluted to 25-40%. edp is diluted from 15-25%, edt 10-15% usually, eau de cologne goes 5% and lower.

I would say perfumes are generally more interesting that EO. Combining notes allows for a lot more depth, temporality, and variety. Both can smell great or smell horrible. Both can preform well or perform horribly. Maybe a forced/ pretentious analogy but EO:Photograph :: Perfume:Painting

I don't think I've ever experienced a fragrance that didn't last at least 5 hours on me. Either you fucks are dryer than sand or you're going noseblind. I don't understand this reformaulation talk either. There's suckers shelling out for vintage because they're under the impression that they're longer lasting. I have a 2018 batch of La Nuit de L'homme and it's got pretty good performance on me. I do moisturize before spraying and that may be key. But if that's all it takes then performance should never be an issue.

What's the risk from buying from TJMaxx, Ross, Marshalls, etc...
I was browsing what they have last week and I saw some Invictus Intense, Le Male, Mont Blanc Individuel, Varvatos Dark Rebel and Rider, bunch of Burberry, Perry Ellis and they're all under $50. So...what's the catch? old stock, damaged, returns?

22. I dont notice many people wearing fragrance in general where I from, but when I do, its not fahrenheit. Its not what I would typically wear but it might be my first designer bottle.

I think it smells mature the best possible way - not necessarily that you would expect someone older to be wearing it, but sophisticated I guess.

I didnt really get the petrol vibe until last night when it mingled with the exhaust of my '84 lol. I like it.

The price skyrocketed in 2017 and have stayed high. I hope Van Cleef & Arpels wake up to themselves and at least relaunch the EDP again. Though I heard rumours they lost big money on MiP so it will probably remain discontinued forever.

There was a meme fragrance on this board a while back that iirc had scents of tobacco, leather, vanilla, coffee. Maybe I'm mixing something up. I recall either the box or the bottle being super simple, and the price being between 100-200 dollars. Everyone jerked its dick in these threads for years but after skimming this thread, I don't see it. It wasn't anything from Tom Ford. If someone can link the meme cologne I'm thinking of please do. Honestly, I don’t really think MiP is all that great. I snagged a bottle a few years ago when it was cheap because people were raving about. It’s alright, doesn’t smell bad, but I can see why it didn’t sell. I think it’s kind of a “cult” scent. It has a small following who love it, but I think most people would be ambivalent about it at best. I don’t think it’d be worth it to them to bring it back, honestly. Maybe as a very small limited edition release or something.

Great bottle, though.

The concentration of the fragrance doesn't necessarily rule how long it lasts, take TFPB's Neroli Portofino for example. Eros lasts a long time, don't worry about that, and don't overspray because you're having olfactory fatigue. Overspraying eros will turn you into THAT fragrance guy.
