go to debian and read their how-to install. its pretty easy. burn an iso onto a usb drive and boot into the installer. its pretty plug and play from there. i recommend XFCE for its customizability. you can always go to some desktop ricing subreddit and copy one of the styles you see there, they post the apps they use and sometimes their config files.

ive spent roughly and equal amount of time with arch and debian. first op asked and we are judging based on how /fa/ the OS is, not the merits of the package 'environment' whatever you mean by that. do you mean the structure of the repositories? do you mean the structure of the command inputs? please clarify. second you cant really compare the package managers, as arch is rolling and debian is stable. you can get bleeding edge with debian, install sid. third arch is for redditors. this ties into point number 1. anything popular on reddit is cringe and bluepilled, even though im saying debian now if it became popular on reddit it would drop off radar.

>> No.13828657

>>13828598
Not him but Debian is pretty 'bluepilled' also.
Arch is cringe too but at least it has it's merits. If you've been on a /wg/ or even /g/ desktop thread you'll see a horrendous amount of users running arch.

Debian is just straight up plain (I guess that's a plus depending on your use case). It's the distro other distros are based on.
People who use Debian are either relatively new to Linux or pros who value stability.

You have to be somewhat experienced to have a successful install of arch. But with Debian it's a simple(er) graphical install.

In the end both have their pros and cons, use the one that works for YOU. Not some dumbass on 4chan.

you actually dont have to be any more experienced to run arch, because the wiki holds your hand through everything. even though debian is stable and you wont have as many issues to troubleshoot, youll have to actually look at the documentation if something comes up. with arch theres a wiki page that just appends common issues on every article resulting in some unholy cross between a stackexchange thread and a proper wiki

and last, you didnt much touch the point about what distro is more /fa/, which is the soul of the question op asked. out of curiosity and to test your hypothesis i looked at the threads on /wg/ and /g/ and tallied the OSs. results:
/g/ - 26 posters
void - 1
gentoo - 2
mac - 3
windows - 3
arch - 1
debian - 1
fedora - 1
slackware - 1

/wg/ - 56 posters in thread
windows - 18
elementary - 1
mint - 1
ubuntu - 6
arch - 1
fedora - 1
debian - 1
mac - 1
slackware - 1
manjaro - 2
centos - 1

fucking crazy. i actually expected a much larger arch representation as well, but only appears once in each thread

That's a fair point, I admit.

>and last, you didnt much touch the point about what distro is more /fa/, which is the soul of the question op asked.
I didn't touch on it because that wasn't the point of my post. I was specifically talking about how you called it 'cringe and bluepilled'.
I dislike the arch userbase as much as you do but you've got to admit setting up and maintaining an arch box is a little more time consuming than Debian (for better or for worse).

As for your results there is more than 1 desktop thread on /wg/
I counted 6 arch altogether which still disproves my point however.
I guess I haven't been on a desktop thread in a while.

There are different operating systems, the most common on desktops and laptops are Windows, MacOS X and distributions of Linux. The pic in the OP is two screenshots of the desktop of a Linux distribution (I don't know which one) with the Xfce desktop environment installed (there are various different DEs available, for example Ubuntu, the most popular Linux distro, uses GNOME by default, but that can be changed by the user). There are themes available for Xfce, and the guy who got that screenshot listed what he was using in the post linked by >>13827428

Ther are many guides online, for Linux the best choice is think pads (the other poster gave you a good list, I would recommend x220). If you want to be autistic with customization, search for a ricing guide. You also have prericed systems avaliable if you do not feel like going through the motions of writing configs. Also checkout Luke Smith on YouTube for autistic terminal Linux stuff (good guy). Prericed I like are clover OS (based on gentoo, made by 4chan) and luke's prericed for arch Linux called LARBS. Although you won't learn much about Linux using them

Hi, I’m person who posted the original point here. Thought I should weigh in since I didn’t think it would be so divisive.

Arch just makes it easier to install things and build from source given the AUR. Configuring and fixing operating system level issues is easier with arch because the wiki makes it easier to ddg hardware issues since it pops up in result lists. I should qualify this by saying it is from the perspective of one of my less Linux-compatible laptop’s hardware. Finding relevant information for dealing with hardware issues is something that I’ve generally found to be a pain in the Debian environment.

I do install debian on my web servers, given how “plug and play” it can be.

Both are stable enough, and I see no real difference between others. The main thing is the AUR. Like, installing random shit is just easier on arch.

At the end of the day both of them are whatever. I don’t really care, I’ve got other work to do. As an aside, I’m a postdoc researcher in computer security and embedded systems. Neither of the systems is hard to set up if you know what you are doing, so arguments like that are irrelevant. Tbqh on a given day I run arch, Debian, Ubuntu, random VMs, qemu, etc.. all the operations are almost the exact same: Unix/Multics/Embedded; they all have page tables, they all have free-based file systems, they all have io.

On weekends I run and develop plan 9, which is the only really effay OS. I was going to bring this up in my original post, but didn’t feel like it.

Okay, meandering and joking aside, the most fa OS is what you do with it. Make the world a better place for your fellow human beings and yourself, bring us closer to truth and farther away from destruction. If you need to rice it in order to feel comfy, do so. Considering nihilism, I can’t justify caring for the world around you, but it still seems like the route most in line with base reality, i.e. truth.
