13767978 No.13767978 [Reply] [Original]

I'm looking for a durable pair of winter boots. I live in the midwest so they don't have to be insulated or have super-aggressive lugs. I just want a good pair that will last a really long time and age with grace. Does anyone have any experience with the the Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths?

>> No.13768018

>>13767978
Yeah, there's been 10 threads a day on reddit, 4Chan & WAYWTmeme for 50 years. Just fucking buy the pair you already think you want. They're fine. They're fucking boots.

I own a pair of Iron Rangers in the amber harness leather and a pair of Blacksmiths in the spitfire leather. They're basically the same shoe as they're built on the same last, just that the IR has a toe cap. I almost never wear my Blacksmiths at all, not because they're bad or anything, just that my right foot is wider than my left and my toes are super smashed in them. My Rangers fit perfect though and I wear them all the time.

They're tanks, you can beat the hell out them and they'll just look better after. I have gone hiking, been in snow and rain and they're fine. I don't baby them and they're aging really well. I've had them almost a year.

Get them and you won't regret it. But that doesn't mean they're the best. I have a pair of White's service boots that are absolutely amazing. I've been looking at Truman and Daytons too as potential next boots. If I ever have the discipline to save up the money I'm gonna get some Vibergs in the future.

Red Wings are very good starter/intro boots to the world of leather boots. Get the Rangers and don't regret it, wear them out and beat them up and they'll just get better as long as you take care of them.

Thanks for the full review my dude. I’m leaning towards the Blacksmiths though. I like the plain toe look more. Glad they’re pretty much the same otherwise.

They're almost the same except the heel counter is different and the toe cap. I like the cap because it breaks up the silhouette and makes the shoes not look at long, but that's just my desired aesthetic, always get what you like.
It's been ages since i looked on their site but the leathers they use for each are different too, so educate yourself on that too. Different leathers age and wear differently. Again, it's all personal preference.

How new are yours? My pair are so fucking dark now after 4 years of wear.

OP Iron Rangers have very little traction on ice if you need to take that into account.

>> No.13769633

>>13769611
Nothing has good traction of ice. Doesn't matter what you're wearing. Ice is ice. You're gonna slip anyway.

That being said all Iron Rangers now have the Vibram mini-lug. The 8111's no longer have the nitrile cork sole anymore. All Blacksmiths have the mini-lug as standard.

What the fuck are you talking about? Those boots don't have a clown toebox? Those are totally regular looking.
If that's "clowny" to you then I don't think boots are your thing and you should look for something else.

Should have been clearer, Pic was unrelated. I meant I was looking for a something with simmiliar quality and price of Iron Rangers, but with service-boot silhouette.

If you like Red Wings then check out their Merchant boot. It's made from the same last as the Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths but without the bump toe. Very similar look and feel.

If you wanted you could check out Wolverine's 1000 Mile Boot but beware they're pretty bad at QC and have leather soles instead of rubber.

Maybe Thursday if they ever got their shit together and fixed their QC issues too. I like their styles but I've heard too many horror stories to ever buy them but I've heard they've definitely cleaned things up so maybe they're worth it now. They're really cheap but with the same style and all unstructured toe boxes.

I know, plus they are more expensive than RWs.

>Thursday
Those look pretty decent design wise but they don't sell them in Europe and they just aren't worth it when you add taxes and shipping.

How much space should there be between your little toe and the side of the shoe?

I'm trying to work out if pic related fit me but my little toes are kinda touching the outside and I'm worried they'll become uncomfortable.

I like the overall shape of thursday boots' captain, but I've read more than enough negative viewpoints on the brand.

Looking for something in a similar style, but more durable. Viberg has some nice models but I find them a bit too pricy right now.

I almost bought a pair a few years ago, but looking back they’re odd. They’re trying to be a dress boot and a work boot. That’s why I ordered the Balcksmiths. They’re like Beckmann’s but they know what they are.

They look like knock-off 1st Avenue from Allen Edmonds, take a look if they have a sale or if you can find some cheap on ebay. Or take a look at taft, if you are willing to shell out 350$ for a much better boot than thursdays. Other than that that there is meermin or bexley if you are feeling stingy. Also check out Indonesian companies like Sagara or Junkard.

Looking at the Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill. It's currently on sale for $295, which is a hundred more than Thursday's but I've been warned about the latter. This is my first boot purchase, I'm a little hesitant to drop almost $300 because I'm not sure what goes along with them.
