hypocritically, bronze is my favorite casing material. its not worth finishing much because it will patina and case backs have to be made from a different material or the patina will fuse them together. but bronze is still my favorite. patina is so romantic

it's just the reliability and the fact I will most likely have all of these in 20 years. I like mechanical watches, I have a sub homage I want, another vostok, russian chrono. It's just that I'm not sure what I'm gonna do in 5-10 years, I guess google someone that works on russian/in house jap/seiko movements and pay a couple hundred because I want to keep owning them. But I'm trying to mitigate having a lot of them since they will eventually need service (I guess the flag for that is when they keep horrible time?)

If get just owning a rolex or a few luxury pieces because of this, because with them there really isn't much of a question whether you should just keep sending them away every few years. Owning 10 cheap mechs though, eeehhhhhhh

Omega and Rolex service is gonna start at $400 at an independent shop, $600 for authorized service. more complications or precious metal cases will up the cost.

they need service every five years. the oils have a limited life. even if a watch is keeping time into the sixth, seventh, tenth year, you're damaging components which will need to be replaced and your service cost will be higher.

other costs will only really be if you break or wearout casing components. bands, pushers, crowns, crystals...

>>13732311

Made with sapphire infused glass that only diamond can scratch, I've spoiled myself with this gorgeous timepiece. The calibre 16 movement has been crowned as the most successful automatic chronograph movement ever produced, completely handmade by man. It is also my very first day date watch and it will be interesting to see if it becomes an important feature that Will depend on over time. I hope you all enjoy this watch as much as I do.

a breguet overcoil.
in silicon...

that's now how it works. overcoils, thanks to Bregut's genius, have indeed been the horological standard since it's inception.
in steel.

today, manufacturers are moving toward photolithography silicon hairsprings. hairsprings which can be printed into a number of shapes. some shapes like pic related, achieve the same result and the breguet overcoil, making it unescessary. what's more - photolith can't make a 3dimentional coil like an overcoils.

so what did modern breguet do? they threw a fit that no one wanted an overcoil any more and created this abomination.

Breguet, the man? cool.
Breguet, the company today? nah

You idiots that think mechanical movements are the best thing ever!1!1 make me cringe more than the 300lb feminists at my university. Can you just admit you like the watches for the look and the prestige of the brand?

As an engineer it triggers my autism when you fucks pretend that making more complicated and more expensive movements that have no additional functionality is "superior technology". Could you imagine if a watch engineer had to design a car engine? He would make the casing out of sapphire. The engine would have a hand crank lever to charge the mechanical mechanism that spins a generator to produce the electricity. To service the engine you have to send it to the "masters" in Switzerland or Germany and it takes two months for them to respond to tell you if anything is even wrong with the engine.

Let it go anon, pilot watches are entirely alien from the brand's dna (yeah, there's a single known prototype of an aviator's watch from 1936, that's not even a chronograph and looks nothing like this). Its sole reason of existence is to make easy money off horologically uncultured boomers and non-whites larping as "cool pilot guys". Yeah, it might look cool but PP should never have released this abomination.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against ETA movements - just against them priced way above other watches with the same tech.

If you think CW is expensive then you don't understand watches. Steinhart use generic ETA movements, CW use their own movement in some models, ETA in the cheaper ones.

They are both basically fashion brands that market themselves as high end because they are mechanical.
