Alright lads, is there a name for these lines I've drawn on pic related? There's a clear disconnection at line 1 and the blend starts at line 2. I ask because I asked by barber for short on the back and sides disconnected from the top, and he made the disconnection at line 2. I O don't buy into the barber meme. I bought a pair of electric clippers with guards for like $20 at Meijer and cut my own hair--like 20 mm on top and 17 mm on the sides. I clean shave the back of my neck with a single blade disposable razor. I use the same set for my beard. Takes a few hours to get used to doing it yourself but I think it's fun. Better haircut than the last few barbers I went to.

I've got rather long hair for a bloke and I really need to have it cut. My army application was rejected so there aren't any strict regulations on how short it needs to be anymore, although as an engineering student I'm in a workshop quite frequently.
Currently hair is shoulder-length and quite curly and can get v. frizzy if I haven't washed it for a day or so. It's impractical and annoying, gets hot in the summer, and I don't think it looks all that great. I feel most of these problems could be solved if I got it cut, especially the sides which are shoulder-length as well. Usually I have it all tied back in a ponytail but this is only a temporary solution.

My questions are as follows:

How do you fix wispy/damaged/frayed hair? My hair is really thick and it's just as the tips mostly.

I think I need a product or something because I don't put my hair under much sun, I don't use super hot water on it nor do I use any hair products or straightening. I only use Moroccan oil based conditioner on it a few times a week and I find that if I use it more my hair goes dry AND wispy.

You need to use hair maks to hydrate your hair. Use them once or twice every qeek, after the shampoo. Conditioner is optional if you use them. Just spread them over your hair (except your head) and let it stay for a minute or two, then wash.
It might look a bit weird in the beggining, but it has to. If you think it looks too weird, you can try a combing cream after the shower. Also, if you want to speed up the process, search for coconut oil techniques.

You could change the style (shorter on sides/back) but the main problem is texture.

If you don't like the texture, try washing it cold, use a lot less shampoo conditioner than you do now (if not none at all), use your hand to push out the excess water, then flick your head left/right forward/back a few times and let it air dry. It should develop a bit more volume and texture instead of being silky flat.

I would reckon you'd do the same thing people do to avoid rashes when shaving other parts of their bodies. I've never shaved my head, only buzzed, but I get mad rashes when shaving my neckbeard, so I use a shaving cream for sensitive skin and apply a moisturizer afterwards. Your mileage may vary though.
