Anyone else go to a university with tons of Indians who dress like pic related? My university is around 13,000 undergrads, but I swear at least 5,000 of them must be Indians imported straight from the slums of New Delhi. They all wear terrible faux leather jackets, light wash Levis that are either boot cut or skin tight, and black sunglasses all the time, no matter if they're indoors or if it's dark out. They also all slick back their hair, hopefully with some sort of gel, but judging by how badly they smell it might just be with their natural body oils that habe built up on their scalps.

The Indian media must portray leather jackets as a status symbol and a testament to one's masculinity even more so than the US media. I've actually heard groups of Indians mocking other Indian men for not wearing a leather jacket, even when it's 90 degreees and 100% humidity.

13614892

That’s how average /fa/ poster looks like in leather jacket.

I think generally the issue is with difficulity of choosing right fit and quality of jacket. Most of people you see on streets are dressed in fast mall tier fashion ones, therefore they look terrible. Many of them can’t even pick the right fit, and If something doesn’t fit you it will look bad really fucking often.
I always can’t help but laugh when I see these gym freaks with well built torso and arms dressed in snug fit Zara jacket. Most of them have also skinny elastane jeans on, and they often forget about legs workout routine, so it looks ridiculous.

If you want to buy a leather jacket - never get the cheap, low quality stuff. If you want to get a bigger, more baggy one, make sure you’re bigger too. If you’re /thinspo/ then forget about your leftover funds, go 100% mad and buy SLP. You won’t regret it.
If you don’t have enough confidence and you have to check your reflection in every mirror to see If you look good in your leather jacket with a troubled face on then forget about buying it, it’s gonna be a waste of money.

Go for simplicity if you really want to get a leather jacket. The design, stitching, color, and materials look disgusting on that.

A lucky few get one and they look good.
If there is a strong possibility you could be one of that lucky few then by all means investigate that, drop about a grand on a great jacket and look enviably great. Godspeed.

They're not the only demographic that does this. Middle-eastern men also rely on the leather jacket...it's just a part of their fashion sense. Granted, leather production is huge in Pakistan because it has very lax laws on pollution...western countries can't dye and chemically set leather because the waste material is too much of a pollutant, but Pakistan doesn't care and dumps it all into the rivers. But if it's cheap there, then it's cheaper in all the areas around too. Also, it's absolutely a status symbol both in the media and in natural life.

>>13614605

One thing that bothers me is that you've put a pin on the left lapel. When you pierce leather, it's pierced forever...you can't repair that, so it's not recommended EVER to put pins and shit on your jacket unless you're absolutely sure that you want that pin there forever. Same with sewn on patches and shit...if it's going on it, then you'll have to keep it there forever. Actually, your query requires a longer post. Hold on.

We need to see where the waist falls, how the lower torso of the jacket hugs the body, etc. For now, given what you've shown us, it looks fine. Nothing wrong with it, but as I said, we don't have much to go on.

What you have to understand about wearing the double rider (that's the style of jacket you have on) is that it has significant historical connotations that are inextricably linked to the style, and these weigh heavily on anyone who wears it. You have Marlon Brando in The Wild One, you have all the rock and roll artists from the 70's, all the punk rockers from the 80's, and anyone who has ever represented 'rebellion' for the past 70 years in total.

When people in western societies see this jacket, they remember all of this collective history and then apply it to the person wearing the jacket, looking to see if the person actually personifies these traits. If they don't, then they are immediately judged as a poser. If they do, then no one notices and the jacket 'fits'. I don't know your personality, but given the gentleness of your face and eyes, the lack of scars or even a piercing, and of course the complete lack of distressing either on the jacket or on your other clothing, the impression is one of a kid who is wearing a tough outfit, but it's just an outfit, not a uniform or something that you use for its purpose.

Many of the problems that surround the double-rider and its appropriateness to certain people comes down to a simple thing: does it look like the person wearing it uses the jacket for what it's made for, or does it look like they're wearing it as a fashion statement? >>13614408 is a fashion statement, that's why it looks wrong. >>13614509 Fashion statement (you can tell because the arms are far too short to ride), >>13614732 Has 'rebellious' tattoos, piercings, and random druggy look...this is acceptable, to a point, though the jacket still looks to damn pristine and not 'lived in'.

>>13617933 is a very interesting exemplar of a halloween look, where the clothing elements are in place but are so out of sync with the human being inside of it that it's clearly a 'costume' rather than a pure extension of his personality. The fit isn't the problem here, as Schotts today tend to be very generous in the stomach area (due to their mainly obese clientele)...the problem is that the person doesn't look like he belongs in it.

I'm glad that you know if it's full grain, that always helps. Just remember that a leather jacket is not only a definition piece in your wardrobe and the immediate attention grabber to your look, but it really does have to be used and not look like its fresh off a rack. Give it a year or so, wear it in the rain a lot, get into a fight or two with it on....that always helps.

How do YOU feel about the fit? Do you like it, are there problems that you wish you could sort out with the length of sleeves or waist, etc? Or are you simply happy with it but are curious if people here think it looks ridiculous on you?

I'm just a guy who's passionate about leather jackets and fortunate enough to have many in my wardrobe. Sorry about the 'bird bird bird'...I'd guess I'm the only one who got that.

>>13619118
I know it's bait, I've seen that pic a dozen times here. But it's illustrative of why the double rider is such a tough jacket to fit and wear. I've tried it myself several times, and it's always looked awful on me, so I simply gave up. It's a design that doesn't work on me, and I've accepted that and moved on. Most Anons wouldn't even consider that possibility, because we see the design so often in popular culture that the assumption is that it's like a suit or military boots or anything else that is immediately recognizable as to be iconic in fashion and thus appropriate for anyone to wear. It's not, that's why it's a challenge.

Regarding faux leather and cheap double riders...there are problems.

1) Proper riding gear is not leather, it's synthetic materials (but NOT faux leather). Sorry for the purists, but true if you want to protect yourself on the road. It's lighter, stronger, and better for ventilation. Leather is now officially outdated. DO NOT go for cheap materials for rider protection. The old saying is still true: dress for the crash. The idiots you see on the road in chuck taylors or t-shirts have no idea what's coming for them. Fwiw, Alpinestars is my favorite of the modern brands...but that's perhaps because it fits me best for my purposes.

2) IF you're going to go with leather, why wouldn't you go with Vanson? They're easily the easiest one to trust, and their sizing is excellent.

I don't know about xelement or nomad USA, and for the life of me I don't know how nomad can produce a cowhide leather jacket for 140 or less...that's not enough to cover the cost of the leather before production, let alone the actual construction of the jacket. cont.

Normally you'll get double-rider jackets in fake leather at that price range, but they claim it's in cowhide. So either they're scamming you, or something is seriously wrong. Just to get leather swatches for the pattern would be around 90 from a good supplier, and that's if the leather is road-worthy cowhide. Wearing inferior leather on the road is a serious mistake, it's not worth taking the risk. If you don't ride, then by all means wear whatever you want. But if my safety is involved, I don't spare expense, because all it takes is an idiot in a minivan who's distracted by their kids and you'll be spilled on the road. Don't wear faux leather or cheap double-riders 'made for actual motorcycling'. Wear synthetics by reputable companies (like Alpinestar) or riding leathers by reputable companies (like Vanson with built-in armor).

Funny, Belstaff was fine until Malenotti left a few years ago (I think it was in 2015 or so). Now it's rather shit...and since Malenotti moved over to Majestic, their line has gotten better (and is now featured in more movies than Belstaff). Sorry you wasted money Anon...you could always repair the seam and sell it to someone who it fits better. Belstaffs from that era have good resale value if in good condition because the demand for Malenotti-era Belstaffs is still high.

Can't believe I got out of bed at 1am to have my leather jacket rated by an anon but I really need some advice here. Ignore the dumb shorts they're pjs

I used to be super fat. 183cm tall, 140kg. I'm down to 90kg now, still fat but looking much better, got a bit of muscle mass too which helps. Got this jacket as a gift when I was still an obese fuck and now I'm not sure if it fits right, the length on the sleeve seems too big and it makes my torso seem bulkier than it actually is. Can I still wear this or should I just get rid of it and get a new one whenever I get to my goal physique?

You caught me at the right time, I'm about to go. I'll be honest with you, so please understand that my thoughts are not a critique of you or your situation in life or your choices, my thoughts are SOLELY about how the jacket fits you.

1) Look at the shoulders; that's the first marker for a well fitted jacket. The shoulder seams slink down off your shoulder and are not in any way square with them. This indicates that the jacket is too large for you in the chest. This is also why the sleeve length seems long. If the shoulder seams lined up with your shoulders, I'd suspect the sleeves would fall correct (usually to the first knuckle of your thumb UNLESS you ride, then it should go to the second knuckle).

2) A jacket of this design (i.e. CLEAN) requires a clean fit. If it doesn't fit you like spandex, then it'll look like you're wearing a trash bag (if it were in black leather, then you'd be in trouble).

So, you have a few options.

a) Get it tailored to fit you. It'll cost, and you need a tailor that can do leather and that you trust, but it's possible.

b) Sell it or give it away to someone who can use it.

Bottom line, I would not wear it at all. Wait until you reach your body goal in terms of fit, stabilize that fit for a year or so to make sure you don't put on the weight, then start trying on jackets from different manufacturers. It's not worth dropping 500$+ on a jacket unless you're sure you'll stay the same size...ideally with a leather jacket you want to get about 10 years or so of wear out of it, so if you plan to change size within 10 years, it's not worth the money. cont.

As a gentle comparison, this jacket was custom made for me, according to my dimensions, and I'd say it's fair for me to declare it to be a good fit. When zipped, there is NO room at all anywhere...it's literally a leather 'shirt' that hugs the body without constricting it. The shoulders are where they need to be, the cuffs end at the right place, etc.

It took me years to get to this fitness level, but I stabilized and then started getting proper clothing (suits first for work, then all the fun stuff). Now I've been putting on some muscle lately and dropping fat because I'm getting older, and thus the DMC coat experiment happened as well (it would not have looked good on me when I was younger). Anyway, the point is that you need to stabilize your size before buying a leather jacket, because the cost is prohibitive and the look is specific.

In the 90's, oversized leather jackets were common and appropriate. But today, everything is fitted. The fitted look will never go out of style, but the oversized comes back in every 35 years. The point is, a fitted jacket will last you longer in terms of fashion, but you have to stay in shape in order for it to work.

Good luck with your challenge Anon. Keep exercising, watch what you eat, and make sure to have patience. These things take time, but they're worth it once you get there. I can now wear off-the-rack clothing, which I never could before....you have no idea how gratifying that is when you're surrounded by a culture that promotes obesity....

>You caught me at the right time, I'm about to go. I'll be honest with you, so please understand that my thoughts are not a critique of you or your situation in life or your choices, my thoughts are SOLELY about how the jacket fits you.
Don't worry, that's exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for, I need to settle this matter and "move on" (either tailoring, which will be hard or giving it away)

The fit of the jacket isn't snug at all on the shoulders like you mentioned. It might have fit me a year and a half ago when I still had a planetary width but now it just slides around whenever I move.

And yeah, compared to your pic, mine looks even baggier, the folds on the left side of my pic make my silhouette look awful, even though lengthwise it stays at my waist just fine.

Thanks for the advice and for the extra motivation. Getting clothing off the rack is really great, even more now that I can buy slimmer jeans that don't need to have a fourth of their length hemmed off lol. I'll push through the last 10kg I need to lose, put on some muscle mass, get a leather jacket and look JUICY

It's a good plan. There are many companies that do custom tailoring when you order a new jacket, though sometimes there is an extra cost depending on the company.

Furthermore, there's a lot for you to research on this topic before spending any money. You need to get familiar with different types of leather, different styles of jacket (double-rider, cafe racer, aviator, etc.), then you need to start trying on jackets from different companies (because two double-riders from two different companies do NOT fit the same at all)....and after all of that, you need to save money and determine what kind of jacket is an extension of you and your personality RATHER than what kind of personality you want to project to others. That's one of the fatal flaws...people think (innocently so) that if they put on a distressed leather jacket all of a sudden they'll be thought of as 'cool' or 'dangerous'....but if they're not like that in terms of personality, then outsiders see through it in a second.

Black is more versatile than brown as a colour, so probably start with that. Aviators are in style at the moment and go with literally anything, so perhaps that's the easiest to start with. Also, my strategy was to start simple with all the other stuff you wear around it. Jeans and a black or white t-shirt ALWAYS work with a leather jacket, no matter what. After that, you can start to diversify and experiment. Eventually you'll have lots of confidence, and then you pass into the territory of wearing whatever the fuck you want (but always fitted extremely well). My DMC jacket falls into this category, even though people here hate it...lol

Alright, gotta go. Good luck getting to your ideal body sculpt...it's a worthy goal as long as you're doing it for yourself (i.e. your health and well-being) and not for others. Best of luck.

My current goal is something like a simple black bomber or aviator jacket I can throw on top of whatever I'm wearing to uni/work. I went pretty minimalist with my current wardrobe (needed some new clothed cause the XXL stuff was too loose but didn't want to commit before losing all the weight I wanted) so it's mostly white/grey shirts, black tees and dark jeans. I work as a lab technician so it would be something to wear while going from place to place when I can't wear my lab coat (walking around in your coat is a big no no). Right now a loose-fitting dark grey peacot is doing the job but it's not as warm as I would like it to be, so I wear a zip up underneath it. I don't want to project any special looks, just something that's warm and goes with everything, both inside and outside my job.

I don't like DmC (I was 140kg and I post on 4chan so of course I'm defensive about a hack and slash franchise "ruined" by westerners) but your jacket isn't bad at all, usually when I see people wearing that sort of stuff it either looks like plastic, fits horribly or both while yours looks like an actual piece of clothing.

Thanks again and good night, anon.

Who? I was referred to as 'Donte-anon' for a time, but that's about it.

>>13619327
Yup, makes sense. The Aviator jacket is easily the most versatile and looks 'almost' formal. Right now, everyone makes an aviator, so you have lots of choice. Just be aware that leather in general is not used for its ability to retain heat...it's used as a windbreaker and a protection against road-rash. Lined leather jackets are warm if the lining is good, but having a lining in a leather jacket can affect the drape of the jacket depending on the material.

>I don't want to project any special looks...

To be honest, leather jackets ALWAYS project something, because it's still a status symbol in most of the world. It will project monetary success (because you can afford the jacket), and of course if you fit it correctly then it'll project understanding of style. Then on top of that any general design will project the general history or current use (aviator is hip and trendy right now with thin/clean pop stars, double-rider = rebel, etc.). You can't avoid this, it comes with the territory.

I understand your thoughts about the DMC jacket...it's absolutely NOT for everyone, nor would I advocate it to be so. In short, when I bought it, I did so for the design, not having played or even heard of DMC, thus not knowing the creative history and situation that was causing conflict amongst fans etc. I just wanted a long leather coat with a hood, and this one suited my style....lol Anyway, it's good quality, but a nightmare to figure out what else goes with it other than Dante-core.

Good luck.

With the pin, that's fine. Sometimes people don't know that holes in leather (at least, real leather) are irreparable, so I wanted to be clear about that. You ride? Excellent! If you live in a small town or city with good weather, it's almost ideal....I moved to a larger city recently, so it's just a death trap given how many Moms in minivans don't look where they're going..and given the weather I now use the car more often than not.

Don't worry about the babyface; the beauty is, you'll look younger than you are for a long time, and that has benefits that come in time. My point about it was that it's something that may make things more difficult in terms of public perception. If you can grow facial hair, try it...you can always shave it off later if it doesn't work out. Once the jacket is distressed somewhat, it'll help too.

Beyond that, ride safe Anon. If you're in a big city, the dangers are real.

Posting pic related as it is a good basic wardrobe to have when starting out or if you're interested in a very minimal way to looking safe. If you are interested in getting into fashion, read the sticky, lurk more, and start collecting inspo of the look you want to have. Leather (jackets / pants) are the GOAT.

Expensive, hard to make, demands care and attention. Serious armor

Cheapness in a leather garment leaps out at you. Most of the offset zipper motorcycle designs are churned out by south asian sweatshops. A dated look.

Leather has to fit absolutely perfectly. No room for error. Some oversizes look good with hoodie underneath.

Best leather is custom. Motorcycle leathers that are fa are hard to find because of the unfortunate stupidity of manufacturers desiring to plaster their logos everywhere.

Rare leathers are fa. Suede, and white

Riding the edge, distressed leathers, painted leathers. Easily starts to look tryhard.

Even if you have the look, the right size, a great jacket can easily have more personality than the person wearing it (not good)

tl;dr Leather is strictly for advanced /fa/ggots

Yup, you're 100% correct..I fjucking made the mistake there. Matchless is the one who's doing all the HOllywood contracts now instead of Belstaff, for good reason. Schwarzenegger likes them, but more importantly, they've somehow got an 'in' into the costume deparements of major companies. I don't think that Belstaff is SHIT necessarilrity....and I'd agree with you that their Shearling is cool. But I think they've lost their originality. They don't have an identity anymore, which is troubling to me....but then again they're playing the diversity game and trying to appeal to ALL markets in order to get an ever shrinking piece of the pie...

>>13621221
Depends on a lot of factors. Where you are geographically, what you trust, what your size is etc. Some companies do custom fits, which is awesome but sometimes costly....but also when you say, 'good leather jacket', that comes with a lot of assumptions. Are you talking Schott good (where everything is in place and reliable but not exceptional)? Are you talking JAL good (where it's exceptional but expensive)? Then all the other random brands which have their own clam to fame?

Nothing wrong with wearing your Dad's jacket. If it fits, then it's a legacy of a kind. Why would you be embarassed wearing it walking around? It's a jakcet, for christs-sake, and you have the benefit of having a story to go behind it. Women get wet about shit like that. Wear it with pride and confidence, and get pussy.

>>13623550
Yes. AND AND?????AND????? What. You have a problem with me? You think the info I happily give is useless ? You think I can't contribute to a thread? What the fuck have you done aside from complainign like a child? One day you'll learn that helping others is the only thing that gives us unconditional pleasure in this world...and that enjoying clothing because you genuinely like it is as beautiful as enjoying a liquor that only you like. Who the fuck cares if others don't like it....no matter what, your own life is enriched, so fuck the haters. Maybe one day you'll find a jacket which gives you as much pleasure as the DMC does for me. Then you'll understand...

>>13623729
Sorry, are you curious about the jacket, or about the fit, or all of it?

>>13623997
Agreed, to a point. Everyone needs help with leather eventually, that's why they come here. Just a clarifyicaiton.

Wasting time in life not wearing what you're afraid to wear is stupid. Go for it and stop being a pussy. Most people in the world dress like shit....what's the worst that can happen to you?

Because this style is originally for biker jackets. It does look good with biking gear, but it just doesn't fit with jeans.

Yeah, took a break, life has changed significantly over the past two weeks (in a good way), and I thought I'd take one last final breath before the plunge. Congrats on the new purchase....does it fit well? I've always found it tough to find things from the 70's that fit me....I think because I'm just not as close to the average fit back then. But for some strange reason I can fit anything from the 50's....

>>13625010
Aww, you're getting closer man. You know what gives it away though? I never capitalize '/fa/' because it's simply incorrect. Similarly, I don't use the Trumpian close (short and pointed) of 'so sad.' I try to help people as much as I can, and I take imitation always as flattery, because it means I've made something of an impact (hopefully good, but no matter what, memorable). I'm glad you took one of the best shots of the jacket though....you could always have used the blue shirt experiments.....

>>13625061
What would you like to know Anon? Are you looking to purchase a leather jacket in general, and want to know the in's and out's of what to look out for before you drop 500+ on a jacket that might not suit or fit you, or do you want to know specifically about this long coat?

Faux is generally a bit shinier, not glossy but has sort of a gleam to it, even the harder ones to tell apart just have a tiny amount of gleam u barely notice, also just check the tag if your not sure or ask clerk

Well if youve ever seen latex bdsm gear it's like half of that gleam, or a quarter of it xD also if I think that the leather is too black I might question whether it's real or not but I usually can tell by the gleam, and I think you can feel it on some but I had a cropped faux leather jacket that didn't have much gleam and it was reasonably black but it felt grainier than my real leather jacket

But yeah also dryness is a thing like my faux leather felt dry and grainy but my real one feels more humid like it has a "this was once alive" feel to it O.o xD

Judging from the wrinkles, the "slim" fit and the fact that it's Chinese, it was probably pinned in the back for this shot and fits like a garbage bag in real life. Have you even read the sticky?
