What's /fa/'s opinion on the Junghans Form A? From what I see, it's a solid watch, and this would be my first automatic. ETA 2824-2 movement (rebranded as J800.2), 39mm case, 9.5mm height, pretty good dial design, ~$1K. I'm personally looking for something that looks like those 1800s era pocket watches, I really like the way the dial looks so I felt this would be a good choice. What do you guys think?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as steel stunner, is in fact, Replica/Black Bay, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, "Shitter".
The genuine Tudor Black Bay is not a bad watch itself, but rather another meme dive watch, Rolex made by put together left-over parts, screws and other components, resulting a full watch defined by very insensitive marketing.
Many watch fuckers wear a replica versions of the Black Bay wristwatch every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the replicas of the Black Bay which is widely worn today are often called “Shitters”, and many of its users are not aware that it basically makes them gay instantly, intensifying their desires to suck cock while wearing their Fake Tudor.
There really are better watches for cheaper, like Seikos, and these people aren't buying those, but it is just a part of their gay nature.

I promise you, you can. In this case. The lug to lug measures only 45 or 46 or something like that. This watch wears small. If you have 14cm wrists, you can easily wear that watch without it being too big.

Now, the 013 looks very strange because the dial is so microscopically small. It's somethng about the thick bezel and the deep but very small dial that makes the whole watch look really strange. Trust me, I've tried it. It's not like a normal 38. Normally 38 is a good size, like the Seiko sarb033. Very nice size indeed. But with the SKX it looks utterly ridiculous. At least try it on before you buy it. Don't just order it from the internet and take your chances. You need to try it on and see what I mean first.

Seiko has a series of enamel dial watches around $1K that might fit your bill. I don't know if they're quite "pocket watch"-ey enough for your taste, but might be worth a look. They're roman numeraled, so they shouldn't have the same effect as the arabic numeral ones you don't like. There's a time+date, one with subdials for date and power, and a chronograph. Cronograph might be your best bet for that pocket watch look, with the pushers. Pic related.

If its in really good shape someone could probably argue up to 200 if you found a motivated buyer. The 3823 was a pretty decent movement. But I would think 100-150 would be more reasonable.

"Vfa"-marked early seioo quartz have prices that are just all over the place, probably because of the perceived prestige of the vfa label (which is totally untrue for the quartz line, where the superior/gfa line was top. To give a point of comparison, this would probably be around equivalent in terms of tier to a King quartz from a later line.

At the very lowest end of the market this is true. Low to mid tier the GS has very good finishing but their designs are very conservative, and that's honestly okay, but these days I prefer JLC at that price range because of their designs, movements and value.

I own everything from mall tier shitters up to ultra high end haute-horology and while I do like certain GS they aren't the holy grail watch /wt/ seems to think.

Gs arent all that great. They are about on par with the Swiss big hitters for a similar price

The mid tier seikos punch above their weight though. If you spend $200 on a seiko you get a $200 watch. Spend between $400-$1000 on a seiko and you are getting a fucking good watch. Nearly on par with a grand seiko and the swiss big hitters, still a fair bit off, but you are spending 1/5th the price. For the average punter it is a great buy

>> No.13587696

>>13587665
>these days I prefer JLC at that price range because of their designs, movements and value
It's certainly fair to prefer JLC in that price range, but I'm not really sold on the idea that the entry-level JLC models have substantially better movements or provide a better value.

>while I do like certain GS they aren't the holy grail watch /wt/ seems to think.
No one thinks they are a holy grail, but they certainly are an excellent production watch maker with very high standards of external finishing, movement quality and levels of hand adjustment, and value for money. I think it's fair to say they should be considered competitive with entry level JLC, with Zenith and with Rolex.

Not necessarily. Many cheap analogue quartz movements have pretty poor shock resistance. I'd say an LCD quartz is always the best bet for a true hard use environment.

Compare GS prices to JLC's entry level lines and realize they do similar levels of manual finishing work on them, which is considerably more than done by Rolex, Zenith, Omega, Breitling, etc in GS' price range.

Grand Seiko's are a very good value, in keeping with Seiko's overall approach of offering good price to quality ratios at almost every price-point.

Agreed, that was exactly my point but said better :) Hang around these threads though and certain people think they are god-tier watch that blows everything else away.

As for JLC. They aren't *substantially* better but their steel models are very good value IMO. You are getting top end movements and finishing at a relatively great price. Also something like a steel Memovox is still only made by their highest level complications department.
