They might say "edgy" but I'd imagine it has a lot more to do with conformity. They're not going to be edgy-looking in any of their uni classes, right?
As to why the uni classes look like that... I don't think it's down to one thing.
Part of it is this whole "smash the beauty standards" bit.
Part of it is lesbians being masculine.
Part of it is desiring to look ugly subconsciously because romantic interest reminds you of the feelings of being molested.
Part of it is being too lazy for long hair.
Part of it is that you're too unhealthy to have long hair if you want it because of shitty choices.
