This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Continuing from the last thread, that’s exactly what I hate about this “hobby”. Any cunt can spend £4000 on a Rolex and automatically become more of a watch enthusiast.
It pains me tha there are thousands of people who own Rolexes and Omegas that know nothing about the technology or heritage and don’t care.

Again dude, not shaming on you for being poor and wearing a shitty watch but let me change the words.

Let’s say you find this forums where people post their gaming rigs, that go from $5k to $7k and you say “hey this seems like a nice community, I’d like to join” but you got no money and you have a $200 Walmart laptop and still decide to post pics of it, specs and shit.

Then people start making fun of you and you, instead of realizing your mistake blame them because they have higher standards than yours and can’t relate to your $200 laptop.

That’s the thing with you people, you are that $200 Walmart laptop guy that gets bullied in a forum and doesn’t realize he doesn’t belong there.

And no, I don’t care if you are poor. If you are joining the game you are playing with the same standards than everybody, nobody is gonna suck your dick and give you some free validation because you blow your year saving in a $2000 seiko

Except that technological and horological merit are not correlated with price in at all the same way as computer performance.

You think this because your only interest in watches is in purchasing their perceived brand status and you have no underlying interest in the technical or horological aspects of watches.

Lawyeranon never talked down to anyone in these threads. That's because even though he had a collection worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, he was interested in the technical and horological aspects of watches and not in status signaling by brand whoring.

Imagine you entering a forum where people post their cars, most of which are nice hondas, or chevys (or whatever, I don't know cars) and generally mid-level or low level cars that have some historical and technological merits that are worth admiring. These people have the knowledge and the enthusiasm to enjoy it on a deeper level too. Some of them even have a couple of cool bmws and porches too, but they are still posting in a respectful manner. Then you enter and start posting your Lamborghini, while larping about how poor everyone else is. "Haha, why would you drive a honda, haha get out of my thread!!! This thread is only about lamborghini now haha!!"

This brings up an interesting point. Seiko is known for having good watches for the budget, but every decade or so they decide a movement is "too good" and stick it in a watch that costs double or more. Eventually for automatics and value it's going to look like:

Seiko 5 -> Orient Bambino -> gap -> Hamilton -> Nomos Club

SARY uses 4R36 which is kind of like 6R15 but has looser tolerances and less life. So if you can cop one for below $400 it isn't so bad.

Quartz is virtually always going to be more accurate. It's just far better equipped for accuracy than automatic watches. I'm wearing a Citizen chronograph right now that loses <5 seconds a month, and I personally consider that to be sub-par for a Quartz watch. My digital Casio F91W loses +- 1 (one) second a month, and cost slightly more than 1-tenth of the Citizen.

Okay, the first thing you need to understand is what adjustment and regulation are, and how they affect the accuracy of a mechanical watch.

Adjustment (on regulated balance escapements) is the laborious process of manually adjusting the geometry of the hairspring to try and minimize how much the timing rate of the watch changes in various positions, at various temperatures, and at various levels of wind. Regulation then moves the center of that timing rate spread.

Now, the first thing you need to know is that Daini Seikosha produced King Seiko models (45xx and 52xx models) were all adjusted to chronometer specs or better, whether or not they say chronometer on the dial. Daini only stopped using "chronometer' on the dial due to the Swiss trying to prevent Seiko from being able to have watches certified.

Secondly, the technical difference between the movements in King Seiko 52xx models and the LM Special 52xx models is the amount of time and effort spent on adjustment of the escapement, and how much the parts in the movement were cherry picked from the parts bin when they were made.

That doesn't sound like a big difference, but actually extent of hairspring adjustment is a big cost difference due to how skilled the labour required is and how much of it is required to really optimize the behaviour of a regulated balance escapement.

Grand Seiko has far more complex external finishing than Rolex, with considerably more of it done by hand than Rolex.

This is understandable as Rolex have tool watch origins and must design their watches in such a way as to facilitate mass production with more automated equipment, while Grand Seiko only produced about 10,000 watches a year and can therefore use much more hand labour. GS manufacturing processes have more in common with entry level JLC than they do with Rolex.

That depends on what you mean by "good" and by "diver".

Do you care about dive watch functionality, or mostly looks? How much do you value the quality of the external finishing on the case and bracelet?

Functionally, a Seiko SXK or Turtle plus a Strapcode bracelet is hard to beat, but the Seiko SBDC051/053 have much nicer external finishing, as does the microbrand Halios Seaforth.

It has nothing to do with snobbery. TAG are overpriced shitters hawked to those who know nothing about watches using tons of marketing.

There are plenty of great watches with excellent price to quality ratios below $750, and lots of great watches with the quality to back up their prices at above $3500, and very few watch brands worth a damn between $750 and $3500. Most of the watches in that price range cost about the same to make as the $500 - $750 watches, but have way more spent on marketing and in turn generate large margins for their sellers.

They are not mere ETA (2824-2 in this case, which isn't bad anyway), just based upon them and then improved upon quite a bit. The higher end calibres are almost as if they are new movements altogether, but you'll pay more than what anon is willing to for those however.
They are as reliable and precise as other brands that you pay a lot more for, certainly if you compare to the same price range. Funnily, Rolex isn't much more precise than these, and the external finishing is even not better at all on most rolexes, especially the subs. You're willing to pay 5k more on a Rolex which really isn't technically much better at all. Just slightly better. 13482941

I'm a fairly serious hobbyist watchmaker and have strong, objectively correct opinions on this. Basically everyone here is wrong (and autistic). All analogies presented thus far have failed.

Understand that 'value' in watches above a certain price point is almost entirely brand driven. That is to say, no matter how hard timepiece autismos try to rationalize their purchases in value oriented terms (usually about as effectively and accurately as listening to a typical anti-gun cat lady try to talk about what guns to ban after a mass shooting), the inarguable truth is that past a certain price point, watches price as luxury items with NO (repeat, NO) attachment to intrinsic value. Rolex realized in the 1980's that the more they charged, the better off their brand was and a phenomenon was born.

Such is the nature of people spending $50,000 on a timepiece. It's not about the watch. It's about signaling how much money you have to others who might recognize it. There are no such people in this thread, nor will you ever be there. So, if you want an accurate narrative on watches, here it is.

You should own three different 'levels' of watches. Work/Adventure, business casual and dress.

1) Work/Adventure. The watch you wear when you're deep sea fishing. This should be a Casio G Shock if you're poor, Hamilton if you're slogging along, Brietling, Omega, Rolex if you're doing OK. Maybe an IWC Portuguese or above if you're rich but there comes a point when it's just retarded. Stainless finish, usually bracelet, not strap, but strap OK in some circumstances. Size: Large.

2) Business Casual. Leather strap wins so fucking hard here, as does gold and (here's the hard part for autistic watch faggots) INTERMEDIATE SIZE. You can go vintage, you can go moderne. Gold case, leather strap, intermediate size. Win.

3) Dress; it doesn't matter. Just nothing with diamonds or precious stones of any kind

Seiko invented the grammar of design aesthetic, and it's definitely not generic. You might find it boring, but that isn't the same thing.

>The 3135 is as good as it gets in the real world
The 3135 is a very nice movement, but the 9Sxx, especially in hi beat form, is truly a world class series production movement from a technical and workmanship perspective. The 9Sxx is probably the best volume produced regulated balance movement ever made, and is certainly the most heavily adjusted one on sale today.

>replacement parts are harder to source?
This is a misguided meme. GS guarantees parts production for ten years after a movement family is discontinued, but that supply of parts should last for at least 40-50 years after the discontinuation of the movement family. Not him, and this is not true for Rolex, but when you buy watches like vacheron constantin, then you will get a watch that is 95% hand made, in a quality that is on the very highest level of what the watch industry is able to create even with machines.
So, you pay for those small miracles that is the details and the work that was put into it.

Hahahaha. So your 'two main things' to justify Rolex 'increased quality' relative to a fourfold increase in price over time is $200-$300 worth of components?

But yeah. Keep saying 'retard' and hope that maybe no one will notice you have zero fucking clue what you're talking about here. You're a classic internet blowhard who has shallow, hobbyist level knowledge and comes into the valley of the blind presenting himself as the one-eyed king.

But just to recap:

* Rolex prices have completely decoupled from value, pricing entirely on exclusivity and 'brand' that hinges on higher pricing, IN SPITE of actual intrinsic value.

* You claim that Rolexes of the now are justified to charge this on value terms, because of $300 worth of improved components

* You just demonstrated that you don't understand the economics of any of this but are too dumb to realize it.

Correct on the bracelet front. Though they were and still are ahead of everyone, it's just that everyone is catching up to them.
Kind of the same with the bezel if you are talking the visible changes you interface with often.
But every single part of the watch has gone through as many changes, developments and improvements over time as the bracelets.

It's plated plastic.
If you want a digital watch with a SS case you can:
>Buy a modern Pulsar or Nixon (these are the few brands I know which sell new digital steel cased watch under 100$)
>Buy vintage digitals from Casio, Seiko, Citizen, Orient and such
>Buy a steel cased G-Shock, like the GW-5000(bezel and strap are still Plastic though)
>Wait a few months and hope to pick the new full metal square G-Shock GMW-B5000 at a relatively reasonable price(MRSP is 500$ and due to high demand now you find it only at over 750$)
