Don't get me wrong, I love Europe and even the slightly shittier British isles, and I'm not some American nationalist anything, but the idea of European prep culture in general, and English and French variants in particular, seems to me completely ridiculous. I mean talking about French prep is like talking about Slavic prep or something. I'm sure their are correlated of what we Americans refer to as "prep", but genuine prep culture has it historical and socio-economic roots in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic US.

Those silly jackets with white piping on the collars? Pure British style influence on the New England prep scene. All those button down collars on preppie shirts? Derived from British polo attire, it kept the collars from flapping in the wind during polo matches. All of the social and historical "roots" of prep culture you talk about were all imported from Great Britain. New Englanders have always wanted to emulate the Brits. Just check out Town and Country magazine for proof.
